Ἀπεκρίθη Answered τέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul, νεύσαντος having made a sign αὐτῷ to him τοῦ the ἡγεμόνος governor λέγειν· to speak: ἐκ For πολλῶν many ἐτῶν years, ὄντα as being σε you κριτήν judge τῷ to ἔθνει nation, τούτῳ this ἐπιστάμενος knowing, εὐθύμως cheerfully τά to the things περί concerning ἐμαυτοῦ myself ἀπολογοῦμαι, I make a defense. δυναμένου Being able σου you ἐπιγνῶναι to know ὅτι that οὐ not πλείους more than εἰσίν there are μοι to me ἡμέραι days δώδεκα twelve, ἀφ ̓ from ἧς which ἀνέβην I went up προσκυνήσων to worship εἰς in Ἰερουσαλήμ. Jerusalem. καί And οὔτε neither ἐν in τῷ the ἱερῷ temple εὗρον did they find με me πρός with τινά anyone διαλεγόμενον reasoning, ἤ or ἐπίστασιν a tumultuous gathering ποιοῦντα making ὄχλου of a crowd, οὔτε nor ἐν in ταῖς the συναγωγαῖς synagogues, οὔτε nor κατά in τήν the πόλιν, city. οὐδέ Nor παραστῆσαι to prove δύνανται are they able σοι to you, περί concerning ὧν [the things] of which νυνί now κατηγοροῦσιν they accuse μου. me. Ὁμολογῶ I confess δέ however τοῦτο this σοι to you, ὅτι that κατά according to τήν the Ὁδόν Way ἥν which λέγουσιν they call αἵρεσιν, a sect, οὕτως so λατρεύω I serve τῷ the πατρῴῳ of our fathers Θεῷ God, πιστεύων believing πᾶσι all things τοῖς - κατά throughout τόν the νόμον law, καί and τοῖς that ἐν in τοῖς the προφήταις Prophets γεγραμμένοις, have been written, ἐλπίδα a hope ἔχων having εἰς in τόν - Θεόν God ἥν which καί also αὐτοί they οὗτοι themselves προσδέχονται, await, ἀνάστασιν [that] a resurrection μέλλειν there is about ἔσεσθαι to be δικαίων of [the] just τέ both καί and ἀδίκων. of [the] unjust. ἐν In τούτῳ this καί also αὐτός I myself ἀσκῶ strive, ἀπρόσκοπον without offense συνείδησιν a conscience ἔχειν to have πρός toward τόν - Θεόν God καί and τούς - ἀνθρώπους men, διά through παντός. everything. Δι ̓ After ἐτῶν years δέ now πλειόνων many, ἐλεημοσύνας alms ποιήσων to bring εἰς to τό the ἔθνος nation μου of me, παρεγενόμην I arrived, καί and προσφοράς, offerings, ἐν during αἷς which εὗρον they found με me ἡγνισμένον purified ἐν in τῷ the ἱερῷ temple, οὐ not μετά with ὄχλου a crowd, οὐδέ nor μετά in θορύβου, tumult. τινές Some δέ however [are] ἀπό from τῆς - Ἀσίας Asia, Ἰουδαῖοι, Jews οὕς who ἔδει ought ἐπί before σοῦ you παρεῖναι to appear καί and κατηγορεῖν to make accusation, εἴ if τὶ anything ἔχοιεν they may have πρός against ἐμέ. me. ἤ Otherwise αὐτοί themselves οὗτοι it εἰπάτωσαν let them say τί any εὗρον they found ἀδίκημα unrighteousness, στάντος having stood μου in me ἐπί before τοῦ the συνεδρίου, Council, ἤ [other] than περί concerning μιᾶς one ταύτης this φωνῆς voice ἧς which ἐκέκραξα I cried out ἐν among αὐτοῖς them ἑστώς standing ὅτι -: Περί Concerning ἀναστάσεως [the] resurrection νεκρῶν of [the] dead ἐγώ I κρίνομαι am judged σήμερον this day ἐφ ̓ by ὑμῶν. you.
Ἀνεβάλετο Put off δέ however αὐτούς them ὁ - Φῆλιξ, Felix, ἀκριβέστερον more precisely εἰδώς having knowledge of τά the things περί concerning τῆς the Ὁδοῦ Way, εἴπας· having said, Ὅταν When Λυσίας Lysias ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander καταβῇ, might have come down, διαγνώσομαι I will examine τά the things καθ ̓ as to ὑμᾶς· you, διαταξάμενος having commanded τῷ the ἑκατοντάρχῃ centurion τηρεῖσθαι to keep αὐτόν him, ἔχειν to [let him] have τέ then ἄνεσιν ease, καί and μηδένα not κωλύειν to forbid τῶν the ἰδίων own αὐτοῦ of him ὑπηρετεῖν to minister αὐτῷ. to him.
Μετά After δέ then ἡμέρας days τινάς some, παραγενόμενος having arrived ὁ - Φῆλιξ Felix σύν with Δρουσίλλῃ Drusilla, τῇ the ἰδίᾳ own γυναικί wife, οὔσῃ being Ἰουδαίᾳ a Jewess, μετεπέμψατο he sent for τόν - Παῦλον Paul καί and ἤκουσεν heard αὐτοῦ him περί concerning τῆς the εἰς in Χριστόν Christ Ἰησοῦν Jesus πίστεως. faith. διαλεγομένου Reasoning δέ then αὐτοῦ he περί concerning δικαιοσύνης righteousness καί and ἐγκρατείας self-control καί and τοῦ the κρίματος judgment τοῦ - μέλλοντος, coming, ἔμφοβος frightened γενόμενος having become, ὁ - Φῆλιξ Felix ἀπεκρίθη· answered, Τό For the νῦν present ἔχον being πορεύου, go away; καιρόν opportunity δέ then μεταλαβών having found, μετακαλέσομαι I will call for σε, you. ἅμα At the same time καί also, ἐλπίζων he is hoping ὅτι that χρήματα riches δοθήσεται will be given αὐτῷ him ὑπό by τοῦ - Παύλου· Paul. διό Therefore καί also πυκνότερον often αὐτόν him μεταπεμπόμενος sending for, ὡμίλει he was talking αὐτῷ. with him. Διετίας Two years δέ however πληρωθείσης having been completed, ἔλαβεν received [as] διάδοχον successor ὁ - Φῆλιξ Felix, Πόρκιον Porcius Φῆστον, Festus; θέλων wishing τέ then χάριτα favor καταθέσθαι to acquire for himself τοῖς with the Ἰουδαίοις Jews, ὁ - Φῆλιξ Felix κατέλιπε left τόν - Παῦλον Paul δεδεμένον. imprisoned.
Φῆστος Festus οὖν therefore ἐπιβάς having arrived in τῇ the ἐπαρχείᾳ province, μετά after τρεῖς three ἡμέρας days ἀνέβη he went up εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem ἀπό from Καισαρείας, Caesarea. ἐνεφάνισαν Made a presentation before τέ then αὐτῷ him οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests καί and οἱ the πρῶτοι chiefs τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews, κατά against τοῦ - Παύλου Paul, καί and παρεκάλουν they were begging αὐτόν him, αἰτούμενοι asking χάριν a favor κατ ̓ against αὐτοῦ him, ὅπως that μεταπέμψηται he would summon αὐτόν him εἰς to Ἰερουσαλήμ, Jerusalem, ἐνέδραν an ambush ποιοῦντες forming ἀνελεῖν to kill αὐτόν him κατά on τήν the ὁδόν. way. ὁ - μέν Indeed οὖν therefore Φῆστος Festus ἀπεκρίθη answered that τηρεῖσθαι is to be kept τόν - Παῦλον Paul εἰς in Καισάρειαν, Caesarea; ἑαυτόν he himself δέ now μέλλειν is about ἐν in τάχει quickness ἐκπορεύεσθαι· to set out. οἱ Those οὖν therefore ἐν among ὑμῖν, you, φησίν, he says, Δυνατοί [those] in power, συνκαταβάντες having gone down too, εἴ if τί anything ἐστίν there is ἐν in τῷ the ἀνδρί man ἄτοπον wrong, κατηγορείτωσαν let them accuse αὐτοῦ. him.
Διατρίψας Having spent δέ then ἐν with αὐτοῖς them ἡμέρας days οὐ not πλείους more than ὀκτώ eight ἤ or δέκα, ten, καταβάς having gone down εἰς to Καισάρειαν, Caesarea, τῇ on the ἐπαύριον next day καθίσας having sat ἐπί on τοῦ the βήματος judgment seat, ἐκέλευσεν he commanded τόν - Παῦλον Paul ἀχθῆναι. to be brought. παραγενομένου Having arrived δέ then αὐτοῦ he, περιέστησαν stood around αὐτόν him οἱ the ἀπό from Ἱεροσολύμων Jerusalem καταβεβηκότες having come down Ἰουδαῖοι Jews, πολλά many καί and βαρέα weighty αἰτιώματα charges καταφέροντες bringing, ἅ which οὐ not ἴσχυον they were able ἀποδεῖξαι, to prove. Τοῦ - Παύλου Paul ἀπολογουμένου made his defense ὅτι -: Οὔτε Neither εἰς against τόν the νόμον law τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews, οὔτε nor εἰς against τό the ἱερόν temple, οὔτε nor εἰς against Καίσαρα Caesar, τὶ [in] anything ἥμαρτον. have I sinned. ὁ - Φῆστος Festus δέ however, θέλων wishing τοῖς on the Ἰουδαίοις Jews χάριν a favor καταθέσθαι to lay, ἀποκριθείς answering τῷ - Παύλῳ Paul, εἶπεν· said, Θέλεις Are you willing εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem ἀναβάς having gone up, ἐκεῖ there περί concerning τούτων these things κριθῆναι to be judged ἐπ ̓ before ἐμοῦ; me? Εἶπεν Said δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος· Paul, Ἐπί Before τοῦ the βήματος judgment seat Καίσαρος of Caesar ἑστώς standing εἰμί, I am, οὗ where με me δεῖ it behooves κρίνεσθαι. to be judged. Ἰουδαίους To [the] Jews οὐδέν nothing ἠδίκησα I have done wrong, ὡς as καί also σύ you κάλλιον very well ἐπιγινώσκεις. know. εἰ If μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἀδικῶ I do wrong, καί and ἄξιον worthy θανάτου of death πέπραχα have done τὶ, anything, οὐ not παραιτοῦμαι I do refuse τό - ἀποθανεῖν· to die. εἰ If δέ however οὐδέν nothing ἐστίν there is ὧν of which οὗτοι they κατηγοροῦσιν [can] accuse μου, me, οὐδείς no one με me δύναται can αὐτοῖς to them χαρίσασθαι· give up. Καίσαρα To Caesar ἐπικαλοῦμαι. I appeal! Τότε Then ὁ - Φῆστος Festus, συλλαλήσας having conferred μετά with τοῦ the συμβουλίου Council, ἀπεκρίθη· answered, Καίσαρα To Caesar ἐπικέκλησαι, You have appealed; ἐπί to Καίσαρα Caesar πορεύσῃ. you will go!
Ἡμερῶν Days δέ now διαγενομένων having passed τινῶν some, Ἀγρίππας Agrippa ὁ the βασιλεύς king καί and Βερνίκη Bernice κατήντησαν came down εἰς to Καισάρειαν Caesarea, ἀσπασάμενοι greeting τόν - Φῆστον. Festus. ὡς As δέ now πλείους many ἡμέρας days διέτριβον they stayed ἐκεῖ, there, ὁ - Φῆστος Festus, τῷ the βασιλεῖ king ἀνέθετο laid before, τά the things κατά relating to τόν - Παῦλον Paul, λέγων· saying, Ἀνήρ A man τίς certain ἐστίν there is καταλελειμμένος left ὑπό by Φήλικος Felix δέσμιος, [as] a prisoner, περί concerning οὗ whom, γενομένου having been μου my εἰς in Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem, ἐνεφάνισαν made a presentation οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests καί and οἱ the πρεσβύτεροι elders τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews, αἰτούμενοι asking κατ ̓ against αὐτοῦ him καταδίκην. judgment, πρός to οὕς whom ἀπεκρίθην I answered ὅτι that οὐ not ἔστιν it is ἔθος [the] custom Ῥωμαίοις with Romans χαρίζεσθαι to give up τινά any ἄνθρωπον man πρίν before ἤ that ὁ the [one] κατηγορούμενος being accused κατά to πρόσωπον face ἔχοι may have [it] τούς the κατηγόρους accusers τόπον [the] opportunity, τέ and ἀπολογίας of defense λάβοι he may have περί concerning τοῦ the ἐγκλήματος. accusation. Συνελθόντων Having come together οὖν therefore αὐτῶν of them ἐνθάδε here, ἀναβολήν delay μηδεμίαν no ποιησάμενος having made, τῇ the ἑξῆς next [day] καθίσας having sat ἐπί on τοῦ the βήματος judgment seat, ἐκέλευσα I commanded ἀχθῆναι to be brought τόν the ἄνδρα· man, περί concerning οὗ whom, σταθέντες having stood up, οἱ the κατήγοροι accusers οὐδεμίαν no αἰτίαν charge ἔφερον were bringing ὧν of which ἐγώ I ὑπενόουν was expecting πονηρῶν, crimes. ζητήματα Questions δέ however τινά certain περί concerning τῆς the ἰδίας own δεισιδαιμονίας religion εἶχον they had πρός against αὐτόν him, καί and περί concerning τινός a certain Ἰησοῦ Jesus τεθνηκότος having been dead, ὅν whom ἔφασκεν was affirming ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ζῆν. to be alive. Ἀπορούμενος Being perplexed δέ now, ἐγώ I τήν - περί concerning τούτων this ζήτησιν inquiry ἔλεγον was asking εἰ if βούλοιτο he was willing πορεύεσθαι to go εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem κἀκεῖ and there κρίνεσθαι to be judged περί concerning τούτων. these things. τοῦ - δέ But Παύλου of Paul ἐπικαλεσαμένου having appealed for τηρηθῆναι to be kept αὐτόν himself εἰς for τήν the τοῦ - Σεβαστοῦ Emperor's διάγνωσιν, decision, ἐκέλευσα I commanded τηρεῖσθαι to be kept αὐτόν him ἕως until οὗ that ἀναπέμψω I might send αὐτόν him πρός to Καίσαρα. Αὔριον, Tomorrow, φησίν, he says, Ἀκούσῃ you will hear αὐτοῦ. him.
Τῇ On the οὖν therefore ἐπαύριον next day, ἐλθόντος having come τοῦ - Ἀγρίππα Agrippa καί and τῆς - Βερνίκης Bernice μετά with πολλῆς great φαντασίας pomp, καί and εἰσελθόντων having entered εἰς into τό the ἀκροατήριον audience hall, σύν with τέ both χιλιάρχοις [the] commanders καί and ἀνδράσιν men τοῖς - κατ ̓ in ἐξοχήν prominence τῆς in the πόλεως city, καί and κελεύσαντος having commanded τοῦ - Φήστου Festus, ἤχθη was brought in ὁ - Παῦλος. Paul. Καί And φησίν says ὁ - Φῆστος· Festus, Ἀγρίππα Agrippa βασιλεῦ King, καί and πάντες all οἱ the συμπαρόντες being present with ἡμῖν us ἄνδρες, men, θεωρεῖτε you see τοῦτον this one, περί concerning οὗ whom ἅπαν all τό the πλῆθος multitude τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews ἐνέτυχον pleaded μοι with me, ἔν in τέ both Ἱεροσολύμοις Jerusalem καί and ἐνθάδε here, βοῶντες crying out [that] μή not δεῖν he ought αὐτόν of him ζῆν to live μηκέτι. no longer. ἐγώ I δέ however, κατελαβόμην having understood μηδέν nothing ἄξιον worthy αὐτόν him θανάτου of death πεπραχέναι, to have done, αὐτοῦ himself δέ and τούτου of this one ἐπικαλεσαμένου having appealed to τόν the Σεβαστόν Emperor, ἔκρινα I determined πέμπειν. to send [him], περί concerning οὗ whom, ἀσφαλές definite τὶ anything γράψαι to write τῷ to κυρίῳ [my] lord, οὐ not ἔχω, I have. διό Therefore προήγαγον I have brought αὐτόν him ἐφ ̓ before ὑμῶν you all, καί and μάλιστα especially ἐπί before σοῦ, you, βασιλεῦ King Ἀγρίππα, Agrippa, ὅπως so that τῆς the ἀνακρίσεως examination γενομένης having taken place, σχῶ I might have τί something γράψω· to write. ἄλογον Absurd γάρ for μοι to me δοκεῖ it seems πέμποντα [in] sending δέσμιον a prisoner, μή not καί also τάς the κατ ̓ against αὐτοῦ him αἰτίας charges σημᾶναι. to specify.
Ἀγρίππας Agrippa δέ then πρός to τόν - Παῦλον Paul ἔφη· was saying, Ἐπιτρέπεται It is permitted σοι you περί for σεαυτοῦ yourself λέγειν. to speak. Τότε Then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul, ἐκτείνας having stretched out τήν the χεῖρα hand, ἀπελογεῖτο· began his defense: Περί Concerning πάντων all ὧν of which ἐγκαλοῦμαι I am accused ὑπό by Ἰουδαίων, [the] Jews, βασιλεῦ King Ἀγρίππα, Agrippa, ἥγημαι I esteem ἐμαυτόν myself μακάριον fortunate ἐπί before σοῦ you, μέλλων being about σήμερον today ἀπολογεῖσθαι to defend myself. μάλιστα Especially γνώστην acquainted ὄντα being σε you πάντων with all τῶν the κατά of Ἰουδαίους [the] Jews ἐθῶν customs, τέ and καί also ζητημάτων, controversies; διό therefore δέομαι I implore [you] μακροθύμως patiently ἀκοῦσαι to hear μου. me. Τήν The μέν indeed οὖν then βίωσιν manner of life μου of me, τήν which [is] ἐκ from νεότητος youth, τήν - ἀπ ̓ from [its] ἀρχῆς beginning γενομένην having been ἐν among τῷ the ἔθνει nation μου of me, ἔν in τέ also Ἱεροσολύμοις Jerusalem, ἴσασι know πάντες all οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι Jews, προγινώσκοντες knowing με me ἄνωθεν, from the first, ἐάν if θέλωσι they would be willing μαρτυρεῖν, to testify, ὅτι that κατά according to τήν the ἀκριβεστάτην strictest αἵρεσιν sect τῆς - ἡμετέρας of our θρησκείας religion ἔζησα I lived [as] Φαρισαῖος. a Pharisee. Καί And νῦν now ἐπ ̓ for [the] ἐλπίδι hope τῆς of the εἰς to τούς the πατέρας fathers ἡμῶν of us ἐπαγγελίας promise γενομένης having been made ὑπό by τοῦ - Θεοῦ God, ἕστηκα I stand κρινόμενος, being judged, εἰς to ἥν which τό the δωδεκάφυλον twelve tribes ἡμῶν of us ἐν in ἐκτενείᾳ earnestness, νύκτα night καί and ἡμέραν day, λατρεῦον serving, ἐλπίζει hope καταντῆσαι, to attain; περί concerning ἧς which ἐλπίδος hope ἐγκαλοῦμαι I am accused ὑπό by Ἰουδαίων, the Jews, βασιλεῦ.
