Εὐλογητός Blessed [be] ὁ the Θεός God καί and Πατήρ Father τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord ἡμῶν of us Ἰησοῦ Jesus Χριστοῦ, Christ, ὁ the Πατήρ Father τῶν - οἰκτιρμῶν of compassions, καί and Θεός God πάσης of all παρακλήσεως, comfort, ὁ the [One] παρακαλῶν comforting ἡμᾶς us ἐπί in πάσῃ all τῇ the θλίψει tribulation ἡμῶν of us, εἰς for τό - δύνασθαι to be able ἡμᾶς us παρακαλεῖν to comfort τούς those ἐν in πάσῃ every θλίψει tribulation διά through τῆς the παρακλήσεως comfort ἧς with which παρακαλούμεθα we are comforted αὐτοί ourselves ὑπό by τοῦ - Θεοῦ. God, ὅτι because καθώς as περισσεύει abound τά the παθήματα sufferings τοῦ of the Χριστοῦ Christ εἰς toward ἡμᾶς, us, οὕτως thus so διά through τοῦ - Χριστοῦ Christ περισσεύει abounds καί also ἡ the παράκλησις comfort ἡμῶν. of us. Εἴτε If δέ however θλιβόμεθα, we are constricted, ὑπέρ [it is] for τῆς - ὑμῶν your παρακλήσεως comfort καί and σωτηρίας· salvation; εἴτε if παρακαλούμεθα, we are encouraged, ὑπέρ [it is] for τῆς - ὑμῶν your παρακλήσεως comfort, τῆς - ἐνεργουμένης operating ἐν in ὑπομονῇ [the] endurance τῶν of the αὐτῶν same παθημάτων sufferings ὧν that καί also ἡμεῖς we πάσχομεν. suffer. καί And ἡ the ἐλπίς hope ἡμῶν of us βεβαία [is] steadfast ὑπέρ for ὑμῶν you, εἰδότες knowing ὅτι that ὡς as κοινωνοί partners ἐστέ you are τῶν of the παθημάτων, sufferings, οὕτως so καί also τῆς of the παρακλήσεως. comfort.

οὐ Not γάρ for θέλομεν do we want ὑμᾶς you ἀγνοεῖν, to be ignorant ἀδελφοί, brothers, ὑπέρ as to τῆς the θλίψεως affliction ἡμῶν of us τῆς - γενομένης having happened ἐν in τῇ - Ἀσίᾳ, Asia, ὅτι that καθ ̓ against ὑπερβολήν excessively ὑπέρ beyond [our] δύναμιν power, ἐβαρήθημεν we were weighed, ὥστε so as ἐξαπορηθῆναι to despair ἡμᾶς for us καί even τοῦ - ζῆν· to live. ἀλλά But αὐτοί we ἐν in ἑαυτοῖς ourselves, τό the ἀπόκριμα sentence τοῦ - θανάτου of death ἐσχήκαμεν, had, ἵνα in order that μή not πεποιθότες trusting ὦμεν we should be ἐφ ̓ in ἑαυτοῖς ourselves, ἀλλ ̓ but ἐπί in τῷ - Θεῷ God, τῷ the [One] ἐγείροντι raising τούς the νεκρούς· dead, ὅς who ἐκ from τηλικούτου such a great θανάτου a death ἐρρύσατο has delivered ἡμᾶς us, καί and ῥύσεται, will deliver [us], εἰς in ὅν whom ἠλπίκαμεν we have hope ὅτι that καί also ἔτι still ῥύσεται, He will deliver [us], συνυπουργούντων joining together καί also ὑμῶν of you ὑπέρ for ἡμῶν us τῇ by δεήσει, supplication, ἵνα so that ἐκ by πολλῶν many προσώπων persons, τό for the εἰς toward ἡμᾶς us χάρισμα grace bestowed, διά through πολλῶν many, εὐχαριστηθῇ thanks may be given ὑπέρ for ἡμῶν. us.

ἡ - γάρ For καύχησις the boasting ἡμῶν of us αὕτη this ἐστίν, is, τό the μαρτύριον testimony τῆς of the συνειδήσεως conscience ἡμῶν, of us, ὅτι that ἐν in ἁγιότητι [the] holiness καί and εἰλικρινείᾳ sincerity τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God, καί and οὐ not ἐν in σοφίᾳ wisdom σαρκικῇ fleshly, ἀλλ ̓ but ἐν in χάριτι [the] grace Θεοῦ, of God, ἀνεστράφημεν we have conducted ourselves ἐν in τῷ the κόσμῳ, world, περισσοτέρως more abundantly δέ now πρός toward ὑμᾶς. you. οὐ No γάρ for ἄλλα other things γράφομεν we write ὑμῖν to you, ἀλλ ̓ other ἤ than ἅ what ἀναγινώσκετε you read ἤ or καί even ἐπιγινώσκετε· understand; ἐλπίζω I hope δέ now ὅτι that ἕως to [the] τέλους end ἐπιγνώσεσθε, you will understand, καθώς as καί also ἐπέγνωτε you have understood ἡμᾶς us ἀπό in μέρους, part, ὅτι so that καύχημα boasting ὑμῶν of you ἐσμέν we are, καθάπερ even as καί also ὑμεῖς you [are] ἡμῶν ours, ἐν in τῇ the ἡμέρᾳ day τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord ἡμῶν of us Ἰησοῦ. Καί And ταύτῃ with this τῇ - πεποιθήσει confidence ἐβουλόμην I was planning πρότερον previously πρός to ὑμᾶς you ἐλθεῖν, to come, ἵνα so that δευτέραν a second χάριν blessing of grace σχῆτε, you might have, καί and δι ̓ through ὑμῶν you διελθεῖν to pass through εἰς into Μακεδονίαν Macedonia, καί and πάλιν again ἀπό from Μακεδονίας Macedonia ἐλθεῖν to come πρός to ὑμᾶς you, καί and ὑφ ̓ by ὑμῶν you προπεμφθῆναι to be set forward εἰς to τήν - Ἰουδαίαν. Τοῦτο Thus οὖν therefore βουλόμενος purposing, μήτι not ἄρα then τῇ - ἐλαφρίᾳ lightness ἐχρησάμην; did I use? ἤ Or ἅ what βουλεύομαι I purpose, κατά according to σάρκα flesh βουλεύομαι, do I purpose, ἵνα so that ᾖ there should be παρ ̓ with ἐμοί me τό - Ναί Yes, ναί yes, καί and τό - Οὔ No, οὔ; no? πιστός Faithful δέ however ὁ - Θεός God [is], ὅτι that ὁ the λόγος word ἡμῶν of us ὁ - πρός to ὑμᾶς you οὐ not ἔστιν was Ναί Yes” καί and Οὔ. Ἐγώ I δέ however, μάρτυρα as witness τόν - Θεόν God ἐπικαλοῦμαι call ἐπί upon τήν - ἐμήν my ψυχήν, soul, ὅτι that φειδόμενος sparing ὑμῶν you, οὐκέτι not yet ἦλθον have I come εἰς to Κόρινθον. Corinth. οὐ Not ὅτι that κυριεύομεν we lord it over ὑμῶν your τῆς - πίστεως faith, ἀλλά but συνεργοί fellow workers ἐσμέν are τῆς of the χαρᾶς joy ὑμῶν· with you; τῇ in the γάρ for πίστει faith ἑστήκατε. you stand firm. Ἔκρινα I judged γάρ for ἐμαυτῷ within myself τοῦτο this, τό - μή not πάλιν again ἐν in λύπῃ grief πρός to ὑμᾶς you ἐλθεῖν. to come. εἰ If γάρ for ἐγώ I λυπῶ grieve ὑμᾶς, you καί again, τίς who ὁ - εὐφραίνων is gladdening με me, εἰ if μή not ὁ the [one] λυπούμενος being grieved ἐκ by ἐμοῦ; me? καί And ἔγραψα I wrote τοῦτο this αὐτό, same thing, ἵνα so that μή not, ἐλθών having come, λύπην grief σχῶ I might have ἀφ ̓ from [those] ὧν of whom ἔδει it behooves με me χαίρειν, to rejoice, πεποιθώς trusting ἐπί in πάντας all ὑμᾶς you, ὅτι that ἡ - ἐμή my χαρά joy πάντων of all ὑμῶν of you ἐστίν. is. ἐκ Out of γάρ for πολλῆς much θλίψεως affliction καί and συνοχῆς anguish καρδίας of heart ἔγραψα I wrote ὑμῖν to you διά through πολλῶν many δακρύων, tears, οὐ not ἵνα that λυπηθῆτε you might be grieved, ἀλλά but τήν the ἀγάπην love ἵνα that γνῶτε you might know ἥν that ἔχω I have περισσοτέρως more abundantly εἰς toward ὑμᾶς. you.

εἰ If δέ however τὶς anyone λελύπηκεν, has caused grief, οὐ not ἐμέ me λελύπηκεν, has he grieved, ἀλλά but ἀπό in μέρους, part — ἵνα that μή not ἐπιβαρῶ, I might put it too severely — πάντας all ὑμᾶς. you. ἱκανόν Sufficient τῷ to τοιούτῳ such a one ἡ [is] the ἐπιτιμία punishment αὕτη this, ἡ which [is] ὑπό by τῶν the πλειόνων, majority, ὥστε so that τοὐναντίον on the contrary μᾶλλον rather ὑμᾶς for you χαρίσασθαι to forgive καί and παρακαλέσαι, to comfort [him], μή lest πώς perhaps τῇ - περισσοτέρᾳ by more abundant λύπῃ sorrow καταποθῇ should be overwhelmed ὁ - τοιοῦτος. such a one. διό Therefore παρακαλῶ I exhort ὑμᾶς you κυρῶσαι to confirm εἰς toward αὐτόν him ἀγάπην· love. εἰς For τοῦτο this γάρ indeed καί also ἔγραψα, did I write, ἵνα so that γνῶ I might know τήν the δοκιμήν proof ὑμῶν, of you, εἰ whether εἰς to πάντα everything ὑπήκοοι obedient ἐστέ. you are. ᾧ To whomever δέ now τὶ anything χαρίζεσθε, you forgive, κἀγώ· I also ; καί and γάρ for ἐγώ I, ὅ to whom κεχάρισμαι, I have forgiven, εἴ if τὶ anything κεχάρισμαι, I have forgiven, δι ̓ [it is] for the sake of ὑμᾶς you ἐν in προσώπῳ [the] person Χριστοῦ, of Christ, ἵνα so that μή not πλεονεκτηθῶμεν we should be outwitted ὑπό by τοῦ - Σατανᾶ· Satan; οὐ not γάρ for αὐτοῦ of his τά - νοήματα schemes ἀγνοοῦμεν. we are ignorant.

Ἐλθών Having come δέ now εἰς to τήν - Τρῳάδα Troas εἰς for τό the εὐαγγέλιον gospel τοῦ - Χριστοῦ of Christ, καί also θύρας a door μοι to me ἀνεῳγμένης having been opened ἐν in Κυρίῳ, [the] Lord, οὐ not ἔσχηκα I had ἄνεσιν rest τῷ in the πνεύματι spirit μου of me, τῷ in the μή not εὑρεῖν finding με my Τίτον Titus τόν the ἀδελφόν brother μου, of me; ἀλλά instead, ἀποταξάμενος having taken leave of αὐτοῖς them, ἐξῆλθον I went out εἰς to Μακεδονίαν. Macedonia.

Τῷ To δέ however Θεῷ God χάρις [be] thanks, τῷ the [One] πάντοτε always θριαμβεύοντι leading in triumph ἡμᾶς us ἐν in τῷ - Χριστῷ Christ, καί and τήν the ὀσμήν fragrance τῆς of the γνώσεως knowledge αὐτοῦ of Him φανεροῦντι making manifest δι ̓ through ἡμῶν us ἐν in παντί every τόπῳ· place. ὅτι For Χριστοῦ of Christ εὐωδία a sweet perfume ἐσμέν we are τῷ - Θεῷ to God ἐν in τοῖς those σωζομένοις being saved καί and ἐν in τοῖς those ἀπολλυμένοις, perishing; οἷς to one μέν indeed ὀσμή an odor ἐκ from θανάτου death εἰς to θάνατον, death, οἷς to one δέ now, ὀσμή a fragrance ἐκ from ζωῆς life εἰς to ζωήν. life. καί And πρός for ταῦτα these things τίς who [is] ἱκανός; sufficient? οὐ Not γάρ for ἐσμέν we are, ὡς like οἱ the πολλοί many, καπηλεύοντες peddling τόν the λόγον word τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God; ἀλλ ̓ but ὡς as ἐκ of εἰλικρινείας, sincerity, ἀλλ ̓ but ὡς as ἐκ of Θεοῦ God, κατέναντι before Θεοῦ God ἐν in Χριστῷ Christ λαλοῦμεν. we speak.

Ἀρχόμεθα Are we beginning πάλιν again ἑαυτούς ourselves συνιστάνειν; to commend? ἤ Or μή not χρῄζομεν we need, ὥς like τινές some, συστατικῶν commendatory ἐπιστολῶν letters πρός to ὑμᾶς you ἤ or ἐκ from ὑμῶν; you? ἡ The ἐπιστολή letter ἡμῶν of us ὑμεῖς you ἐστέ, are, ἐνγεγραμμένη having been inscribed ἐν in ταῖς the καρδίαις hearts ἡμῶν, of us, γινωσκομένη being known καί and ἀναγινωσκομένη being read ὑπό by πάντων all ἀνθρώπων, men, φανερούμενοι being revealed ὅτι that ἐστέ you are ἐπιστολή a letter Χριστοῦ of Christ, διακονηθεῖσα having been ministered to ὑφ ̓ by ἡμῶν, us, ἐνγεγραμμένη having been inscribed οὐ not μέλανι in ink ἀλλά but Πνεύματι with [the] Spirit Θεοῦ of God ζῶντος, [the] living, οὐ not ἐν on πλαξίν tablets λιθίναις of stone ἀλλ ̓ but ἐν on πλαξίν tablets καρδίαις of hearts σαρκίναις. human.

Πεποίθησιν Confidence δέ now τοιαύτην such ἔχομεν we have διά through τοῦ - Χριστοῦ Christ πρός toward τόν - Θεόν. God. οὐ Not ὅτι that ἀφ ̓ from ἑαυτῶν ourselves ἱκανοί sufficient ἐσμέν we are λογίσασθαι to reckon τὶ anything ὡς as ἐκ of ἑαυτῶν, ourselves, ἀλλ ̓ but ἡ the ἱκανότης sufficiency ἡμῶν of us ἐκ [is] of τοῦ - Θεοῦ, God, ὅς who καί also ἱκάνωσεν has made competent ἡμᾶς us [as] διακόνους ministers καινῆς of a new διαθήκης, covenant, οὐ not γράμματος of [the] letter ἀλλά but πνεύματος· of [the] Spirit; τό the γάρ for γράμμα letter ἀποκτέννει, kills, τό - δέ but πνεῦμα the Spirit ζωοποιεῖ. gives life. εἰ If δέ now ἡ the διακονία ministry τοῦ - θανάτου of death, ἐν in γράμμασιν letters ἐντετυπωμένη having been engraved λίθοις on stones, ἐγενήθη was produced ἐν in δόξῃ, glory, ὥστε so as for μή not δύνασθαι to be able ἀτενίσαι to look intently τούς the υἱούς sons Ἰσραήλ of Israel εἰς into τό the πρόσωπον face Μωϋσέως of Moses, διά on account of τήν the δόξαν glory τοῦ of the προσώπου face αὐτοῦ of him, τήν which καταργουμένην, is fading, πῶς how οὐχί not μᾶλλον more, ἡ the διακονία ministry τοῦ of the πνεύματος Spirit ἔσται will be ἐν in δόξῃ; glory? εἰ If γάρ for τῇ in the διακονία ministry τῆς - κατακρίσεως of condemnation [was] δόξα, glory, πολλῷ much μᾶλλον more περισσεύει abounds ἡ the διακονία ministry τῆς - δικαιοσύνης of righteousness δόξῃ. [in] glory! καί Even γάρ for, οὐ not δεδόξασται has been glorified τό that δεδοξασμένον having been made glorious ἐν in τούτῳ this τῷ - μέρει respect, εἵνεκεν on account of τῆς the ὑπερβαλλούσης surpassing [it] δόξης. glory. εἰ If γάρ for τό that which καταργούμενον is fading away διά [was] through δόξης, glory, πολλῷ much μᾶλλον more [is] τό that μένον remaining ἐν in δόξῃ. glory!

Ἔχοντες Having οὖν therefore τοιαύτην such ἐλπίδα hope, πολλῇ great παρρησίᾳ boldness χρώμεθα we use, καί and οὐ not καθάπερ as Μωϋσῆς Moses ἐτίθει would put κάλυμμα a veil ἐπί over τό the πρόσωπον face αὐτοῦ of himself, πρός for τό - μή not ἀτενίσαι to look intently τούς the υἱούς sons Ἰσραήλ of Israel εἰς into τό the τέλος end τοῦ of that καταργουμένου. fading away. Ἀλλά But ἐπωρώθη were hardened τά the νοήματα minds αὐτῶν. of them. ἄχρι Until γάρ for τῆς the σήμερον present ἡμέρας day, τό the αὐτό same κάλυμμα veil ἐπί at τῇ the ἀναγνώσει reading τῆς of the παλαιᾶς old διαθήκης covenant μένει, remains, μή not ἀνακαλυπτόμενον being lifted, ὅτι which ἐν in Χριστῷ Christ καταργεῖται· is being removed. ἀλλ ̓ But ἕως unto σήμερον this day, ἡνίκα when ἄν - ἀναγινώσκηται shall be read Μωϋσῆς, Moses, κάλυμμα a veil ἐπί over τήν the καρδίαν heart αὐτῶν of them κεῖται· lies. ἡνίκα Whenever δέ however ἐάν if ἐπιστρέψῃ [one] shall have turned πρός to Κύριον, [the] Lord, περιαιρεῖται is taken away τό the κάλυμμα. veil.
