Τελευτήσαντος Having died δέ now τοῦ - Ἡρῴδου of Herod, ἰδού behold, ἄγγελος an angel Κυρίου of [the] Lord φαίνεται appears κατ ̓ in ὄναρ a dream τῷ to Ἰωσήφ Joseph ἐν in Αἰγύπτῳ Egypt, λέγων· saying, Ἐγερθείς Having arisen, παράλαβε take τό the παιδίον Child καί and τήν the μητέρα mother αὐτοῦ of Him, καί and πορεύου go εἰς into γῆν [the] land Ἰσραήλ· of Israel; τεθνήκασιν they have died γάρ for οἱ those ζητοῦντες seeking τήν the ψυχήν life τοῦ of the παιδίου. ἀκούσας Having heard δέ now ὅτι that Ἀρχέλαος Archelaus βασιλεύει reigns over τῆς - Ἰουδαίας Judea ἀντί in place of τοῦ the πατρός father αὐτοῦ of him Ἡρῴδου Herod, ἐφοβήθη he was afraid ἐκεῖ there ἀπελθεῖν· to go; χρηματισθείς having been divinely warned δέ now κατ ̓ in ὄναρ a dream, ἀνεχώρησεν he withdrew εἰς into τά the μέρη district τῆς - Γαλιλαίας, of Galilee, καί and ἐλθών having come, κατῴκησεν he dwelt εἰς in πόλιν a city λεγομένην being called Ναζαρέτ· Nazareth; ὅπως so that πληρωθῇ it should be fulfilled τό that ῥηθέν having been spoken διά through τῶν the προφητῶν prophets, ὅτι that Ναζωραῖος A Nazarene κληθήσεται. He will be called.
ἐν In δέ then ταῖς the ἡμέραις days ἐκείναις those, παραγίνεται comes Ἰωάννης John ὁ the βαπτιστής Baptist, κηρύσσων preaching ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ wilderness τῆς - Ἰουδαίας of Judea, καί and λέγων· saying, Μετανοεῖτε· Repent; ἤγγικεν has drawn near γάρ for ἡ the βασιλεία kingdom τῶν of the οὐρανῶν. heavens.
οὗτος This γάρ for ἐστίν is ὁ the [One] ῥηθείς having been spoken of διά through Ἠσαΐου Isaiah τοῦ the προφήτου prophet, λέγοντος· saying, Φωνή [The] voice βοῶντος of one crying ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ· wilderness, Ἑτοιμάσατε Prepare τήν the ὁδόν way Κυρίου, of [the] Lord; εὐθείας straight ποιεῖτε make τάς the τρίβους paths αὐτοῦ. of Him.’”
Αὐτός Himself δέ now ὁ - Ἰωάννης John εἶχεν had τό the ἔνδυμα garment αὐτοῦ of him ἀπό of τριχῶν hair καμήλου of a camel, καί and ζώνην a belt δερματίνην of leather περί around τήν the ὀσφύν waist αὐτοῦ, of him, ἡ - δέ and τροφή the food ἦν was αὐτοῦ of him ἀκρίδες locusts καί and μέλι honey ἄγριον. wild. Τότε At that time ἐξεπορεύετο were going out πρός to αὐτόν him Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem, καί and πᾶσα all ἡ - Ἰουδαία Judea, καί and πᾶσα all ἡ the περίχωρος region around τοῦ the Ἰορδάνου, Jordan, καί and ἐβαπτίζοντο were being baptized ἐν in τῷ the Ἰορδάνῃ Jordan ποταμῷ River ὑπ ̓ by αὐτοῦ him, ἐξομολογούμενοι confessing τάς the ἁμαρτίας sins αὐτῶν. of them.
Ἰδών Having seen δέ now πολλούς many τῶν of the Φαρισαίων Pharisees καί and Σαδδουκαίων Sadducees ἐρχομένους coming ἐπί to τό the βάπτισμα baptism αὐτοῦ of him, εἶπεν he said αὐτοῖς· to them, Γεννήματα Brood ἐχιδνῶν, of vipers, τίς who ὑπέδειξεν forewarned ὑμῖν you φυγεῖν to flee ἀπό from τῆς the μελλούσης coming ὀργῆς; wrath? ποιήσατε Produce οὖν therefore καρπόν fruit ἄξιον worthy τῆς - μετανοίας of repentance. καί And μή not δόξητε presume λέγειν to say ἐν within ἑαυτοῖς· yourselves, Πατέρα [As] father ἔχομεν we have τόν - Ἀβραάμ. Abraham. λέγω I say γάρ for ὑμῖν to you ὅτι that δύναται able is ὁ - Θεός God ἐκ out of τῶν the λίθων stones τούτων these ἐγεῖραι to raise up τέκνα children τῷ unto Ἀβραάμ. Abraham. ἤδη Already δέ now ἡ the ἀξίνη ax πρός to τήν the ῥίζαν root τῶν of the δένδρων trees κεῖται· is applied; πᾶν every οὖν therefore δένδρον tree μή not ποιοῦν producing καρπόν fruit καλόν good ἐκκόπτεται is cut down καί and εἰς into πῦρ [the] fire βάλλεται. is thrown.
Ἐγώ I μέν indeed ὑμᾶς you βαπτίζω baptize ἐν with ὕδατι water εἰς to μετάνοιαν, repentance, ὁ - δέ but ὀπίσω after μου me ἐρχόμενος is coming ἰσχυρότερος mightier μού than I, ἐστίν, He οὗ of whom οὐ not εἰμί I am ἱκανός fit τά the ὑποδήματα sandals βαστάσαι· to carry. αὐτός He ὑμᾶς you βαπτίσει will baptize ἐν with Πνεύματι [the] Spirit Ἁγίῳ Holy καί and πυρί· with fire, οὗ whose τό - πτύον winnowing fork [is] ἐν in τῇ the χειρί hand αὐτοῦ of Him; καί and διακαθαριεῖ He will clear τήν the ἅλωνα threshing floor αὐτοῦ of Him καί and συνάξει will gather τόν the σῖτον wheat αὐτοῦ of Him εἰς into τήν the ἀποθήκην, barn; τό the δέ but ἄχυρον chaff κατακαύσει He will burn up πυρί with fire ἀσβέστῳ. unquenchable.
Τότε Then παραγίνεται comes ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀπό from τῆς - Γαλιλαίας Galilee ἐπί to τόν the Ἰορδάνην Jordan, πρός unto τόν - Ἰωάννην John, τοῦ - βαπτισθῆναι to be baptized ὑπ ̓ by αὐτοῦ. him. ὁ - δέ But Ἰωάννης John διεκώλυεν was hindering αὐτόν Him, λέγων· saying, Ἐγώ I χρείαν need ἔχω have ὑπό by σοῦ You βαπτισθῆναι, to be baptized, καί and σύ You ἔρχῃ come πρός to με; me? Ἀποκριθείς Answering, δέ however, ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἶπεν said πρός unto αὐτόν· him, Ἄφες Permit [it] ἄρτι, presently; οὕτως thus γάρ for πρέπον fitting ἐστίν it is ἡμῖν to us πληρῶσαι to fulfill πᾶσαν all δικαιοσύνην. righteousness. τότε Then ἀφίησιν he permits αὐτόν. Him. Βαπτισθείς Having been baptized δέ now, ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εὐθύς immediately ἀνέβη went up ἀπό from τοῦ the ὕδατος· water; καί and ἰδού behold, ἠνεῴχθησαν were opened αὐτῷ to Him οἱ the οὐρανοί, heavens, καί and εἶδεν he saw τό the Πνεῦμα Spirit τοῦ of Θεοῦ God καταβαῖνον descending ὡσεί as περιστεράν a dove, καί and ἐρχόμενον alighting ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτόν· Him. καί And ἰδού behold, φωνή a voice ἐκ out τῶν of the οὐρανῶν heavens, λέγουσα· saying, Οὗτος This ἐστίν is ὁ the Υἱός Son μου of me, ὁ the ἀγαπητός, beloved, ἐν in ᾧ whom εὐδόκησα. I was well pleased.
Τότε Then ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀνήχθη was led up εἰς into τήν the ἔρημον wilderness ὑπό by τοῦ the Πνεύματος Spirit πειρασθῆναι to be tempted ὑπό by τοῦ the διαβόλου. devil. καί And νηστεύσας having fasted ἡμέρας days τεσσεράκοντα forty καί and νύκτας nights, τεσσεράκοντα, forty ὕστερον afterward ἐπείνασεν. He was hungry. Καί And προσελθών having come ὁ the πειράζων [one] tempting, εἶπεν he said αὐτῷ· to Him, εἰ If Υἱός Son εἶ You are τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God, εἰπέ speak, ἵνα that οἱ the λίθοι stones οὗτοι these, ἄρτοι loaves of bread γένωνται. might become. ὁ - δέ But ἀποκριθείς answering, εἶπεν· He said, Γέγραπται· It has been written: οὐκ Not ἐπ ̓ by ἄρτῳ bread μόνῳ alone ζήσεται shall live ὁ the ἄνθρωπος, man, Ἀλλ ̓ but ἐπί by παντί every ῥήματι word ἐκπορευομένῳ coming out διά of στόματος [the] mouth Θεοῦ. of God.’
Τότε Then παραλαμβάνει takes αὐτόν Him ὁ the διάβολος devil εἰς to τήν the ἁγίαν holy πόλιν city καί and ἔστησεν sets αὐτόν Him ἐπί upon τό the πτερύγιον pinnacle τοῦ of the ἱεροῦ temple, καί and λέγει says αὐτῷ· to him, εἰ If Υἱός Son εἶ You are τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God, βάλε throw σεαυτόν Yourself κάτω· down; γέγραπται it has been written γάρ for ὅτι -: Τοῖς To the ἀγγέλοις angels αὐτοῦ of Him ἐντελεῖται He will give orders περί concerning σοῦ You, καί and ἐπί in χειρῶν [their] hands ἀροῦσιν will they bear up σε, You, μήποτε lest ever προσκόψῃς You strike πρός against λίθον a stone τόν the πόδα foot σου. of You.’
Ἔφη Said αὐτῷ to him ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Πάλιν Again γέγραπται· it has been written: οὐκ Not ἐκπειράσεις you shall test Κύριον [the] Lord τόν the Θεόν God σου. of you.’
Πάλιν Again παραλαμβάνει takes αὐτόν Him ὁ the διάβολος devil εἰς to ὄρος a mountain ὑψηλόν high λίαν exceedingly, καί and δείκνυσιν shows αὐτῷ to Him πάσας all τάς the βασιλείας kingdoms τοῦ of the κόσμου world καί and τήν the δόξαν glory αὐτῶν of them, καί and εἶπεν he says αὐτῷ· to Him, Ταῦτα These things σοι to You πάντα all δώσω, will I give, ἐάν if πεσών falling down, προσκυνήσῃς You will worship μοι. me. Τότε Then λέγει says αὐτῷ to him ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Ὕπαγε, Get you away, Σατανᾶ· Satan; γέγραπται it has been written γάρ· for: Κύριον [The] Lord τόν the θεόν God σου of you, προσκυνήσεις you shall worship, καί and αὐτῷ Him μόνῳ alone λατρεύσεις. shall you serve.’

Ἀπό From τότε that time ἤρξατο began ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus κηρύσσειν to proclaim καί and λέγειν· to say, Μετανοεῖτε· Repent, ἤγγικεν has drawn near γάρ for ἡ the βασιλεία kingdom τῶν of the οὐρανῶν. heavens.
Περιπατῶν Walking δέ now παρά beside τήν the θάλασσαν Sea τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee, εἶδεν He saw δύο two ἀδελφούς, brothers, Σίμωνα Simon τόν - λεγόμενον called Πέτρον Peter, καί and Ἀνδρέαν Andrew τόν the ἀδελφόν brother αὐτοῦ, of him, βάλλοντας casting ἀμφίβληστρον a net εἰς into τήν the θάλασσαν· sea; ἦσαν they were γάρ for ἁλιεῖς. fishermen. καί And λέγει He says αὐτοῖς· to them, Δεῦτε Come follow ὀπίσω after μου, Me, καί and ποιήσω I will make ὑμᾶς you ἁλιεῖς fishers ἀνθρώπων. of men. οἱ - δέ And εὐθέως immediately ἀφέντες having left τά the δίκτυα nets, ἠκολούθησαν they followed αὐτῷ.
