Ἤκουον They were listening δέ now αὐτοῦ to him ἄχρι until τούτου this τοῦ - λόγου word, καί and ἐπῆραν they lifted up τήν the φωνήν voice αὐτῶν of them, λέγοντες· saying, Αἶρε Away with ἀπό from τῆς the γῆς earth, τόν the τοιοῦτον, such. οὐ Not γάρ for καθῆκεν it is fit αὐτόν he ζῆν. to live! Κραυγαζόντων Were crying out τέ then αὐτῶν they, καί and ῥιπτούντων casting off τά the ἱμάτια garments, καί and κονιορτόν dust βαλλόντων throwing εἰς into τόν the ἀέρα, air. ἐκέλευσεν Ordered ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander εἰσάγεσθαι to be brought αὐτόν him εἰς into τήν the παρεμβολήν, barracks, εἴπας having directed μάστιξιν by flogging ἀνετάζεσθαι to be examined αὐτόν him, ἵνα so that ἐπιγνῷ he might know δι ̓ for ἥν what αἰτίαν cause οὕτως like this ἐπεφώνουν they were crying out αὐτῷ. against him. ὡς As δέ however προέτειναν he stretched forward αὐτόν him τοῖς with the ἱμᾶσιν, straps, εἶπεν said πρός to τόν the ἑστῶτα standing by ἑκατόνταρχον centurion ὁ - Παῦλος· Paul, εἰ If ἄνθρωπον a man, Ῥωμαῖον a Roman καί and ἀκατάκριτον uncondemned, ἔξεστιν it is lawful ὑμῖν to you μαστίζειν; to flog? Προσελθών Having come near δέ then, ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to him, Λέγε Tell μοι, me, σύ you Ῥωμαῖος a Roman εἶ; are? ὁ - δέ And ἔφη· he was saying, Ναί. Yes. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered δέ then ὁ the χιλίαρχος· commander, Ἐγώ I πολλοῦ with a great κεφαλαίου sum τήν the πολιτείαν citizenship ταύτην this ἐκτησάμην. bought. ὁ - Δέ But Παῦλος Paul ἔφη· was saying, Ἐγώ I δέ however καί even γεγέννημαι. was born [so]. Εὐθέως Immediately οὖν therefore ἀπέστησαν departed ἀπ ̓ from αὐτοῦ him οἱ those μέλλοντες being about αὐτόν him ἀνετάζειν, to examine, καί and ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander δέ also ἐφοβήθη was afraid, ἐπιγνούς having ascertained ὅτι that Ῥωμαῖος a Roman ἐστίν he is, καί and ὅτι because αὐτόν him ἦν he had δεδεκώς. bound. Τῇ On the δέ now ἐπαύριον next day, βουλόμενος desiring γνῶναι to know τό - ἀσφαλές, for certain τό - τί why κατηγορεῖται he is accused ὑπό by τῶν the Ἰουδαίων, Jews, ἔλυσεν he unbound αὐτόν him καί and ἐκέλευσεν commanded συνελθεῖν to assemble τούς the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests καί and πᾶν all τό the συνέδριον, council. καί And καταγαγών having brought down τόν - Παῦλον Paul, ἔστησεν he set [him] εἰς among αὐτούς. them.
Ἀτενίσας Having looked intently δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul τῷ at the συνεδρίῳ Council, εἶπεν· he said, Ἄνδρες Men, ἀδελφοί, brothers, ἐγώ I πάσῃ in all συνειδήσει conscience ἀγαθῇ good πεπολίτευμαι have lived as a citizen τῷ - Θεῷ to God ἄχρι unto ταύτης this τῆς - ἡμέρας. day. ὁ - δέ Then ἀρχιερεύς the high priest Ἁνανίας Ananias ἐπέταξεν commanded τοῖς those παρεστῶσιν standing by αὐτῷ him τύπτειν to strike αὐτοῦ of him τό the στόμα. mouth. Ἔφη Was saying τέ then ὁ - Παῦλος· Paul, οὐκ Not ᾔδειν, I was aware, ἀδελφοί, brothers, ὅτι that ἐστίν he is ἀρχιερεύς· high priest; γέγραπται it has been written γάρ for ὅτι -: Ἄρχοντα [The] ruler τοῦ of the λαοῦ people σου of you, οὐ not ἐρεῖς you shall speak κακῶς. evil [of].’ Γνούς Having known δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ὅτι that τό the ἕν one μέρος part ἐστίν consists Σαδδουκαίων of Sadducees, τό - δέ but ἕτερον the other Φαρισαίων of Pharisees, ἔκραζεν he began crying out ἐν in τῷ the συνεδρίῳ· Council, Ἄνδρες Men, ἀδελφοί, brothers, ἐγώ I Φαρισαῖος a Pharisee εἰμί, am, υἱός [the] son Φαρισαίων, of a Pharisee; περί concerning ἐλπίδος [the] hope καί and ἀναστάσεως resurrection νεκρῶν of [the] dead ἐγώ I κρίνομαι. am judged. Τοῦτο This δέ then αὐτοῦ of him λαλοῦντος saying, ἐγένετο arose στάσις a dissension τῶν between the Φαρισαίων Pharisees καί and Σαδδουκαίων Sadducees, καί and ἐσχίσθη was divided τό the πλῆθος. crowd. Σαδδουκαῖοι Sadducees μέν indeed γάρ for λέγουσιν say μή not εἶναι there to be ἀνάστασιν resurrection, μήτε nor ἄγγελον angel, μήτε nor πνεῦμα, spirit; Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees δέ however ὁμολογοῦσιν confess τά - ἀμφότερα. both. Ἐγένετο Arose δέ then κραυγή a clamor μεγάλη, great, καί and ἀναστάντες having risen up τινές some τῶν of the γραμματέων scribes τοῦ of the μέρους party τῶν of the Φαρισαίων Pharisees, διεμάχοντο they were contending, λέγοντες· saying, Οὐδέν Nothing κακόν evil εὑρίσκομεν we find ἐν in τῷ the ἀνθρώπῳ man τούτῳ· this. εἰ What if δέ now πνεῦμα a spirit ἐλάλησεν has spoken αὐτῷ to him, ἤ or ἄγγελος; an angel? πολλῆς Great δέ then γινομένης arising στάσεως dissension, φοβηθείς having feared ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander, μή lest διασπασθῇ should be torn to pieces ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ὑπ ̓ by αὐτῶν them, ἐκέλευσεν he commanded τό the στράτευμα troop, καταβάν having gone down, ἁρπάσαι to take by force αὐτόν him ἐκ from μέσου midst αὐτῶν of them, ἄγειν to bring [him] τέ then εἰς into τήν the παρεμβολήν. barracks. Τῇ - δέ But ἐπιούσῃ the following νυκτί night, ἐπιστάς having stood by αὐτῷ him, ὁ the Κύριος Lord εἶπεν· said, Θάρσει· Take courage, ὡς as γάρ for διεμαρτύρω you have fully testified τά - περί about ἐμοῦ Me εἰς at Ἰερουσαλήμ, Jerusalem, οὕτω so σε you δεῖ it behooves καί also εἰς in Ῥώμην Rome μαρτυρῆσαι. to testify.
Γενομένης When it was δέ then ἡμέρας day, ποιήσαντες having made συστροφήν a conspiracy, οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι Jews ἀνεθεμάτισαν put under an oath ἑαυτούς themselves, λέγοντες declaring μήτε neither φαγεῖν to eat μήτε nor πιεῖν to drink ἕως until οὗ that ἀποκτείνωσιν they should kill τόν - Παῦλον. Paul. νῦν Now οὖν therefore ὑμεῖς you, ἐμφανίσατε make a report τῷ to the χιλιάρχῳ commander σύν along with τῷ the συνεδρίῳ Council, ὅπως so that καταγάγῃ he might bring down αὐτόν him εἰς to ὑμᾶς you, ὡς as μέλλοντας being about διαγινώσκειν to examine ἀκριβέστερον more earnestly τά the things περί about αὐτοῦ· him; ἡμεῖς we δέ then, πρό before τοῦ - ἐγγίσαι drawing near αὐτόν his, ἕτοιμοι ready ἐσμέν are τοῦ - ἀνελεῖν to kill αὐτόν. him. Ἀκούσας Having heard δέ however ὁ the υἱός son τῆς of the ἀδελφῆς sister Παύλου of Paul τήν of the ἐνέδραν, ambush, παραγενόμενος having come near καί and εἰσελθών having entered εἰς into τήν the παρεμβολήν barracks, ἀπήγγειλεν he reported [it] τῷ - Παύλῳ. to Paul. προσκαλεσάμενος Having called to [him] δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἕνα one τῶν of the ἑκατονταρχῶν centurions, ἔφη· he was saying, Τόν The νεανίαν young man τοῦτον this ἄπαγε take πρός to τόν the χιλίαρχον, commander; ἔχει he has γάρ for ἀπαγγεῖλαι to report τὶ something αὐτῷ. to him. ὁ The [one] μέν indeed οὖν therefore παραλαβών having taken αὐτόν him ἤγαγεν brought [him] πρός to τόν the χιλίαρχον commander, καί and φησίν· he says, ὁ The δέσμιος prisoner Παῦλος Paul, προσκαλεσάμενος having called to με me, ἠρώτησεν asked [me] τοῦτον this τόν - νεανίσκον young man ἀγαγεῖν to lead πρός to σέ you, ἔχοντα having τὶ something λαλῆσαι to say σοι. to you. Ἐπιλαβόμενος Having taken hold δέ then τῆς the χειρός hand αὐτοῦ of him ὁ the χιλίαρχος commander, καί and ἀναχωρήσας having withdrawn κατ ̓ in ἰδίαν private, ἐπυνθάνετο, he began to inquire, Τί What ἐστίν is it ὅ that ἔχεις you have ἀπαγγεῖλαι to report μοι; to me? Εἶπεν He said δέ then ὅτι -, οἱ The Ἰουδαῖοι Jews συνέθεντο have agreed τοῦ - ἐρωτῆσαι to ask σε you ὅπως that αὔριον tomorrow τόν - Παῦλον Paul καταγάγῃς you might bring down εἰς into τό the συνέδριον Council, ὡς as μέλλον being about τὶ something ἀκριβέστερον more earnestly πυνθάνεσθαι to inquire περί about αὐτοῦ. him. σύ You οὖν therefore μή not πεισθῇς should be persuaded αὐτοῖς· by them. ἐνεδρεύουσιν Lie in wait γάρ indeed αὐτόν for him ἐκ of αὐτῶν them ἄνδρες men πλείους more than τεσσεράκοντα, forty, οἵτινες who ἀνεθεμάτισαν have put under an oath ἑαυτούς themselves μήτε neither φαγεῖν to eat μήτε nor πιεῖν to drink ἕως until οὗ that ἀνέλωσιν they have killed αὐτόν, him; καί and νῦν now εἰσίν they are ἕτοιμοι ready, προσδεχόμενοι awaiting τήν the ἀπό from σοῦ you ἐπαγγελίαν. promise. ὁ - μέν Indeed οὖν therefore χιλίαρχος the commander ἀπέλυσε dismissed τόν the νεανίσκον young man, παραγγείλας having instructed [him], Μηδενί No one ἐκλαλῆσαι tell ὅτι that ταῦτα these things ἐνεφάνισας you have reported πρός to ἐμέ. me.
