God. Βουλομένου Resolving δέ then αὐτοῦ he διελθεῖν to pass through εἰς into τήν - Ἀχαΐαν, Achaia, προτρεψάμενοι having encouraged [him], οἱ the ἀδελφοί brothers ἔγραψαν wrote τοῖς to the μαθηταῖς disciples ἀποδέξασθαι to welcome αὐτόν, him, ὅς who παραγενόμενος having arrived, συνεβάλετο helped πολύ greatly τοῖς those πεπιστευκόσιν having believed διά through τῆς - χάριτος· grace. εὐτόνως Powerfully γάρ for τοῖς the Ἰουδαίοις Jews διακατηλέγχετο he was refuting δημοσίᾳ publicly, ἐπιδεικνύς showing διά by τῶν the γραφῶν Scriptures εἶναι to be τόν the Χριστόν Christ Ἰησοῦν. Jesus.
Ἐγένετο It came to pass δέ now, ἐν while τῷ - τόν - Ἀπολλῶ Apollos εἶναι was ἐν in Κορίνθῳ Corinth, Παῦλον Paul διελθόντα having passed through τά the ἀνωτερικά upper μέρη parts κατελθεῖν to come down εἰς to Ἔφεσον Ephesus, καί and εὑρεῖν having found τινάς certain μαθητάς disciples, εἶπεν he said τέ also πρός to αὐτούς· them, εἰ If Πνεῦμα [the] Spirit Ἅγιον Holy ἐλάβετε did you receive, πιστεύσαντες; having believed? οἱ - δέ And [they said] πρός to αὐτόν· him, Ἀλλ ̓ But οὐδ ̓ not even εἰ that [a] Πνεῦμα Spirit Ἅγιον Holy ἔστιν there is, ἠκούσαμεν. did we hear. Εἶπεν He said τέ· then, εἰς Into τί what οὖν then ἐβαπτίσθητε; were you baptized? οἱ - δέ And εἶπαν· they said, εἰς Into τό - Ἰωάννου John's βάπτισμα. baptism. Εἶπεν Said δέ then Παῦλος· Paul, Ἰωάννης John ἐβάπτισεν baptized βάπτισμα a baptism μετανοίας of repentance, τῷ the λαῷ people λέγων telling εἰς in τόν the [One] ἐρχόμενον coming μετ ̓ after αὐτόν him ἵνα that πιστεύσωσιν, they should believe, τοῦτ ̓ that ἔστιν is, εἰς in τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Jesus. Ἀκούσαντες Having heard δέ then, ἐβαπτίσθησαν they were baptized εἰς in τό the ὄνομα name τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord Ἰησοῦ, Jesus. καί And ἐπιθέντος having laid αὐτοῖς on them τοῦ - Παύλου Paul τάς the χεῖρας hands, ἦλθε came τό the Πνεῦμα Spirit τό - Ἅγιον Holy ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτούς, them; ἐλάλουν they were speaking τέ then γλώσσαις in tongues καί and ἐπροφήτευον. prophesying. ἦσαν There were δέ then οἱ the πάντες in all ἄνδρες men ὡσεί about δώδεκα. twelve.
Εἰσελθών Having entered δέ then εἰς into τήν the συναγωγήν synagogue, ἐπαρρησιάζετο he was speaking boldly ἐπί for μῆνας months τρεῖς three, διαλεγόμενος reasoning καί and πείθων persuading τά - περί concerning τῆς the βασιλείας kingdom τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God. ὡς When δέ however τινές some ἐσκληρύνοντο were hardened καί and ἠπείθουν were disbelieving, κακολογοῦντες speaking evil of τήν the Ὁδόν Way ἐνώπιον before τοῦ the πλήθους, multitude, ἀποστάς having departed ἀπ ̓ from αὐτῶν them, ἀφώρισεν he took separately τούς the μαθητάς disciples, καθ ̓ every ἡμέραν day διαλεγόμενος reasoning ἐν in τῇ the σχολῇ lecture hall Τυράννου. of Tyrannus. τοῦτο This δέ then ἐγένετο continued ἐπί for ἔτη years δύο, two, ὥστε so that πάντας all τούς those κατοικοῦντας inhabiting τήν - Ἀσίαν Asia ἀκοῦσαι heard τόν the λόγον word τοῦ of the Κυρίου, Lord, Ἰουδαίους Jews τέ both καί and Ἕλληνας. Greeks. Δυνάμεις Miracles τέ then οὐ not τάς - τυχούσας being ordinary, ὁ - Θεός God ἐποίει was performing διά by τῶν the χειρῶν hands Παύλου, of Paul, ὥστε so that καί even ἐπί to τούς the ἀσθενοῦντας ailing ἀποφέρεσθαι were brought ἀπό from τοῦ the χρωτός skin αὐτοῦ of him σουδάρια handkerchiefs ἤ or σιμικίνθια aprons, καί and ἀπαλλάσσεσθαι departed ἀπ ̓ from αὐτῶν them τάς the νόσους, diseases, τά the τέ also πνεύματα spirits τά - πονηρά evil ἐκπορεύεσθαι. left.
Ἐπεχείρησαν Attempted δέ now τινές some of καί also τῶν of the περιερχομένων itinerant Ἰουδαίων Jews, ἐξορκιστῶν exorcists, ὀνομάζειν to invoke ἐπί over τούς those ἔχοντας having τά - πνεύματα spirits τά - πονηρά evil τό the ὄνομα name τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord Ἰησοῦ Jesus, λέγοντες· saying, Ὁρκίζω I adjure ὑμᾶς you τόν [by] Ἰησοῦν Jesus ὅν whom Παῦλος Paul κηρύσσει. proclaims. ἦσαν They were δέ now τινός certain Σκευᾶ of Sceva, Ἰουδαίου a Jew, ἀρχιερέως a high priest, ἑπτά seven υἱοί sons, τοῦτο this ποιοῦντες. were doing. ἀποκριθέν Answering δέ however, τό the πνεῦμα spirit τό - πονηρόν evil εἶπεν said αὐτοῖς· to them Τόν -, Μέν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus γινώσκω I know, καί and τόν - Παῦλον Paul ἐπίσταμαι, I am acquainted with; ὑμεῖς you δέ however, τίνες who ἐστέ; are you? καί And ἐφαλόμενος having leapt ὁ the ἄνθρωπος man ἐπ ̓ on αὐτούς them ἐν in ᾧ whom ἦν was τό the πνεῦμα spirit τό - πονηρόν, evil, κατακυριεύσας having overpowered ἀμφοτέρων them all, ἴσχυσεν he prevailed κατ ̓ against αὐτῶν them ὥστε so that γυμνούς naked καί and τετραυματισμένους wounded ἐκφυγεῖν they fled ἐκ out of τοῦ the οἴκου house ἐκείνου. that. Τοῦτο This δέ now ἐγένετο became γνωστόν known πᾶσιν to all Ἰουδαίοις Jews τέ both καί and Ἕλλησιν Greeks, τοῖς those κατοικοῦσιν inhabiting τήν - Ἔφεσον Ephesus; καί and ἐπέπεσεν fell φόβος fear ἐπί upon πάντας all αὐτούς them, καί and ἐμεγαλύνετο was being magnified τό the ὄνομα name τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord Ἰησοῦ. Jesus. πολλοί Many τέ then τῶν of those πεπιστευκότων having believed ἤρχοντο were coming, ἐξομολογούμενοι confessing καί and ἀναγγέλλοντες declaring τάς the πράξεις deeds αὐτῶν. of them. ἱκανοί Many δέ now τῶν of those τά the περίεργα magic arts πραξάντων having practiced, συνενέγκαντες having brought τάς the βίβλους books, κατέκαιον burned [them] ἐνώπιον before πάντων, all. καί And συνεψήφισαν they counted up τάς the τιμάς prices αὐτῶν of them καί and εὗρον found [it] ἀργυρίου of silverlings μυριάδας myriads πέντε. five. Οὕτως Thus κατά with κράτος might τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord ὁ the λόγος word ηὔξανεν continued to increase καί and ἴσχυεν. prevail.
ὡς After δέ now ἐπληρώθη were fulfilled ταῦτα, these things, ἔθετο purposed ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἐν in τῷ the πνεύματι Spirit, διελθών having passed through τήν - Μακεδονίαν Macedonia καί and Ἀχαΐαν Achaia, πορεύεσθαι to go εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem, εἰπών having said ὅτι -, Μετά After τό - γενέσθαι having been με my ἐκεῖ there, δεῖ it behooves με me καί also Ῥώμην Rome ἰδεῖν. to see. ἀποστείλας Having sent δέ then εἰς into τήν - Μακεδονίαν Macedonia δύο two τῶν of those διακονούντων ministering αὐτῷ, to him, Τιμόθεον Timothy καί and Ἔραστον, Erastus, αὐτός he ἐπέσχεν remained χρόνον for a time εἰς in τήν - Ἀσίαν. Ἐγένετο Arose δέ now κατά at τόν the καιρόν time ἐκεῖνον same τάραχος a disturbance οὐ not ὀλίγος small περί concerning τῆς the Ὁδοῦ. Way. Δημήτριος Demetrius γάρ for τὶς a certain [man] ὀνόματι, named, ἀργυροκόπος, a silversmith, ποιῶν making ναούς shrines ἀργυροῦς silver Ἀρτέμιδος of Artemis, παρείχετο was bringing τοῖς to the τεχνίταις craftsmen οὐ no ὀλίγην little ἐργασίαν, business, οὕς whom συναθροίσας having brought together, καί also τούς the περί in τά such τοιαῦτα things ἐργάτας workmen, εἶπεν· he said, Ἄνδρες, Men, ἐπίστασθε you know ὅτι that ἐκ from ταύτης this τῆς - ἐργασίας business ἡ the εὐπορία wealth ἡμῖν of us ἐστίν is. καί And θεωρεῖτε you see καί and ἀκούετε hear ὅτι that οὐ not μόνον only Ἐφέσου in Ephesus, ἀλλά but σχεδόν almost πάσης all τῆς - Ἀσίας of Asia, ὁ - Παῦλος Paul, οὗτος this πείσας having persuaded [them], μετέστησεν has turned away ἱκανόν a great many ὄχλον people, λέγων saying ὅτι that οὐ not εἰσίν they are θεοί gods οἱ - διά by χειρῶν hands γινόμενοι. being made. οὐ Not μόνον only δέ but τοῦτο this κινδυνεύει is endangered ἡμῖν to us, τό the μέρος business εἰς into ἀπελεγμόν disrepute ἐλθεῖν to come, ἀλλά but καί also τό the τῆς of the μεγάλης great θεᾶς goddess Ἀρτέμιδος Artemis ἱερόν temple εἰς for οὐθέν nothing λογισθῆναι, to be reckoned, μέλλειν to be τέ and καί also καθαιρεῖσθαι deposed τῆς the μεγαλειότητος majesty αὐτῆς of her, ἥν whom ὅλη all ἡ - Ἀσία Asia καί and ἡ the οἰκουμένη world σέβεται. worship. Ἀκούσαντες Having heard δέ then καί and γενόμενοι having become πλήρεις full θυμοῦ of rage, ἔκραζον they were crying out, λέγοντες· saying, Μεγάλη Great [is] ἡ - Ἄρτεμις Artemis Ἐφεσίων. of [the] Ephesians. καί And ἐπλήσθη was filled ἡ the πόλις city τῆς whole συγχύσεως, with confusion; ὥρμησαν they rushed τέ and ὁμοθυμαδόν with one accord εἰς to τό the θέατρον theatre, συναρπάσαντες having dragged off Γάϊον Gaius καί and Ἀρίσταρχον Aristarchus, Μακεδόνας, Macedonians, συνεκδήμους fellow travelers Παύλου. of Paul. Παύλου Of Paul δέ however βουλομένου intending εἰσελθεῖν to go in εἰς to τόν the δῆμον people, οὐ not εἴων would allow αὐτόν him οἱ the μαθηταί· disciples. τινές Some δέ then καί also τῶν of the Ἀσιαρχῶν, Asiarchs, ὄντες being αὐτῷ to him φίλοι, friends, πέμψαντες having sent πρός to αὐτόν him, παρεκάλουν were urging [him] μή not δοῦναι to venture ἑαυτόν himself εἰς into τό the θέατρον. theatre. Ἄλλοι Others μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἄλλο some τὶ thing ἔκραζον· were crying out; ἦν was γάρ for ἡ the ἐκκλησία assembly συγκεχυμένη confused, καί and οἱ - πλείους most οὐ not ᾔδεισαν did know τίνος for what ἕνεκα cause συνεληλύθεισαν. they were assembled. ἐκ Out of δέ now τοῦ the ὄχλου crowd συνεβίβασαν to explain himself Ἀλέξανδρον, Alexander, προβαλόντων having thrust forward αὐτόν him τῶν the Ἰουδαίων· Jews. ὁ - δέ And Ἀλέξανδρος Alexander, κατασείσας having motioned with τήν the χεῖρα hand, ἤθελεν was wanting ἀπολογεῖσθαι to make a defense τῷ to the δήμῳ. people. ἐπιγνόντες Having recognized δέ however ὅτι that Ἰουδαῖος a Jew ἐστίν, he is, φωνή a cry ἐγένετο there was μία one ἐκ from πάντων all, ὡς about ἐπί ongoing ὥρας hours δύο two κραζόντων· crying out, Μεγάλη Great [is] ἡ - Ἄρτεμις Artemis Ἐφεσίων. of [the] Ephesians.
