διελέγετο He was reasoning μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἐν in τῇ the συναγωγῇ synagogue τοῖς with the Ἰουδαίοις Jews καί and τοῖς those σεβομένοις worshiping, καί and ἐν in τῇ the ἀγορᾷ marketplace κατά on πᾶσαν every ἡμέραν day πρός with τούς those παρατυγχάνοντας. meeting [him]. Τινές Some δέ then καί also τῶν of the Ἐπικουρείων Epicureans καί and Στοϊκῶν Stoics, φιλοσόφων philosophers, συνέβαλλον encountered αὐτῷ, him. καί And τινές some ἔλεγον· were saying, Τί What ἄν - θέλοι may desire ὁ of the σπερμολόγος babbler οὗτος this λέγειν; to say? οἱ Others δέ· however, Ξένων Of foreign δαιμονίων gods δοκεῖ he seems καταγγελεύς a proclaimer εἶναι, to be, ὅτι because τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus καί and τήν the ἀνάστασιν resurrection εὐηγγελίζετο. he was proclaiming the gospel of. Ἐπιλαβόμενοι Having taken hold τέ also αὐτοῦ of him, ἐπί to τόν the Ἄρειον Ares πάγον Hill ἤγαγον they brought [him], λέγοντες· saying, Δυνάμεθα Are we able γνῶναι to know τίς what [is] ἡ the καινή new αὕτη this, ἡ which ὑπό by σοῦ you λαλουμένη is spoken, διδαχή; teaching? ξενίζοντα Strange things γάρ for τινά some εἰσφέρεις you are bringing εἰς to τάς the ἀκοάς ears ἡμῶν· of us. βουλόμεθα We resolve οὖν therefore γνῶναι to know τίνα what θέλει wish ταῦτα these things εἶναι. to be. Ἀθηναῖοι [The] Athenians δέ now πάντες all, καί and οἱ the ἐπιδημοῦντες visiting ξένοι strangers, εἰς in οὐδέν nothing ἕτερον else ηὐκαίρουν spent their time ἤ than λέγειν to tell τὶ something ἤ and ἀκούειν to hear τὶ something καινότερον. new.
Σταθείς Having stood δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἐν in μέσῳ [the] midst τοῦ of the Ἀρείου Ares Πάγου Hill, ἔφη· he was saying, Ἄνδρες Men, Ἀθηναῖοι, Athenians, κατά in πάντα all things ὡς as δεισιδαιμονεστέρους very religious ὑμᾶς you θεωρῶ. I behold. διερχόμενος Passing through γάρ for καί and ἀναθεωρῶν beholding τά the σεβάσματα objects of worship ὑμῶν of you, εὗρον I found καί even βωμόν an altar ἐν on ᾧ which ἐπεγέγραπτο· had been inscribed: ΑΓΝΩΣΤΩ To an unknown ΘΕΩ. God.
Ὅ Whom οὖν therefore ἀγνοοῦντες not knowing εὐσεβεῖτε, you worship, τοῦτο Him ἐγώ I καταγγέλλω proclaim ὑμῖν. to you. ὁ The Θεός God ὁ - ποιήσας having made τόν the κόσμον world καί and πάντα all things τά that [are] ἐν in αὐτῷ, it, οὗτος He οὐρανοῦ of heaven καί and γῆς earth ὑπάρχων being Κύριος Lord, οὐ not ἐν in χειροποιήτοις hand-made ναοῖς temples κατοικεῖ dwells, οὐδέ nor ὑπό by χειρῶν hands ἀνθρωπίνων of men θεραπεύεται is He served, προσδεόμενος as needing τινός, anything, αὐτός Himself διδούς giving πᾶσι to all ζωήν life καί and πνοήν breath, καί and τά the πάντα· all; ἐποίησεν He made τέ then ἐκ of ἑνός one, πᾶν every ἔθνος nation ἀνθρώπων of men, κατοικεῖν to dwell ἐπί upon παντός all προσώπου the face τῆς of the γῆς, earth, ὁρίσας having determined προστεταγμένους [the] appointed καιρούς times καί and τάς the ὁροθεσίας boundaries τῆς of the κατοικίας habitation αὐτῶν of them, ζητεῖν to seek τόν - Θεόν, God, εἰ if ἄρα perhaps γέ indeed ψηλαφήσειαν they might palpate for αὐτόν Him, καί and εὕροιεν, might find Him. καί And γέ indeed, οὐ not μακράν far ἀπό from ἑνός one ἑκάστου each ἡμῶν of us ὑπάρχοντα. He is.
ἐν In αὐτῷ Him γάρ for ζῶμεν we live καί and κινούμεθα move καί and ἐσμέν, are.’ ὡς As καί also τινές some τῶν of the καθ ̓ among ὑμᾶς you ποιητῶν poets εἰρήκασιν· have said, Τοῦ Of [Him] γάρ for καί also γένος offspring ἐσμέν. we are.’
γένος Offspring οὖν therefore ὑπάρχοντες being τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God, οὐ not ὀφείλομεν we ought νομίζειν to consider χρυσῷ to gold, ἤ or ἀργύρῳ to silver, ἤ or λίθῳ, to stone, χαράγματι a graven thing, τέχνης of craft καί and ἐνθυμήσεως imagination ἀνθρώπου, of man, τό the Θεῖον Divine Being εἶναι to be ὅμοιον. like. Τούς The μέν indeed οὖν therefore χρόνους times τῆς - ἀγνοίας of ignorance ὑπεριδών having overlooked ὁ - Θεός, God, τά - νῦν now παραγγέλλει He commands τοῖς - ἀνθρώποις men πάντας all πανταχοῦ everywhere μετανοεῖν, to repent, καθότι because ἔστησεν He set ἡμέραν a day ἐν in ᾗ which μέλλει He is about κρίνειν to judge τήν the οἰκουμένην world ἐν in δικαιοσύνῃ, righteousness, ἐν by ἀνδρί a man ᾧ whom ὥρισεν, He appointed, πίστιν a guarantee παρασχών having provided πᾶσιν to all, ἀναστήσας having raised αὐτόν Him ἐκ out from νεκρῶν. [the] dead. Ἀκούσαντες Having heard of δέ now ἀνάστασιν a resurrection νεκρῶν of [the] dead, οἱ some μέν indeed ἐχλεύαζον, began to mock [him]; οἱ some δέ however εἶπαν· said, Ἀκουσόμεθα We will hear σου you περί concerning τούτου this καί also πάλιν. again. οὕτως Thus ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἐξῆλθεν went out ἐκ from μέσου [the] midst αὐτῶν. of them. τινές Some δέ however ἄνδρες men, κολληθέντες having joined themselves αὐτῷ to him, ἐπίστευσαν, believed, ἐν among οἷς whom καί also Διονύσιος [were] Dionysius ὁ the Ἀρεοπαγίτης Areopagite, καί and γυνή a woman ὀνόματι named Δάμαρις Damaris, καί and ἕτεροι others σύν with αὐτοῖς. them.
Μετά And after ταῦτα these things, χωρισθείς having departed ἐκ from τῶν - Ἀθηνῶν Athens, ἦλθεν he came εἰς to Κόρινθον. Corinth. καί And εὑρών having found τινά a certain Ἰουδαῖον Jew ὀνόματι named Ἀκύλαν, Aquila, Ποντικόν of Pontus τῷ - γένει a native, προσφάτως recently ἐληλυθότα having come ἀπό from τῆς - Ἰταλίας Italy, καί and Πρίσκιλλαν Priscilla γυναῖκα wife αὐτοῦ, of him, διά because of τό - διατεταχέναι having commanded Κλαύδιον Claudius χωρίζεσθαι to depart πάντας all τούς the Ἰουδαίους Jews ἀπό out of τῆς - Ῥώμης, Rome, προσῆλθεν he came αὐτοῖς to them, καί and διά due to τό of the ὁμότεχνον same trade εἶναι being, ἔμενεν he stayed παρ ̓ with αὐτοῖς, them καί and ἠργάζετο· worked; ἦσαν they were γάρ for σκηνοποιοί tentmakers τῇ by the τέχνῃ. trade. Διελέγετο He was reasoning δέ now ἐν in τῇ the συναγωγῇ synagogue κατά on πᾶν every σάββατον Sabbath, ἔπειθεν persuading τέ both Ἰουδαίους Jews καί and Ἕλληνας. Greeks. ὡς When δέ now κατῆλθον came down ἀπό from τῆς - Μακεδονίας Macedonia ὅ - τέ both Σιλᾶς Silas καί and ὁ - Τιμόθεος, Timothy, συνείχετο was occupied τῷ with the λόγῳ word ὁ - Παῦλος Paul, διαμαρτυρόμενος earnestly testifying τοῖς to the Ἰουδαίοις Jews εἶναι to be τόν the Χριστόν Christ Ἰησοῦν. Jesus. ἀντιτασσομένων Opposing δέ however αὐτῶν of them καί and βλασφημούντων reviling [him], ἐκτιναξάμενος having shaken out τά the ἱμάτια garments, εἶπεν he said πρός to αὐτούς· them, Τό The αἷμα blood ὑμῶν of You ἐπί [be] upon τήν the κεφαλήν head ὑμῶν· of you; καθαρός clean ἐγώ I [am]. ἀπό From τοῦ - νῦν now on, εἰς to τά the ἔθνη Gentiles πορεύσομαι. I will go. Καί And μεταβάς having departed ἐκεῖθεν from there εἰσῆλθεν he came εἰς to [the] οἰκίαν house τινός of a certain one ὀνόματι named Τιτίου Titius Ἰούστου Justus, σεβομένου worshiping τόν - Θεόν, God, οὗ of whom ἡ the οἰκία house ἦν was συνομοροῦσα adjoining τῇ the συναγωγῇ. synagogue. Κρίσπος Crispus δέ now, ὁ the ἀρχισυνάγωγος ruler of the synagogue, ἐπίστευσεν believed τῷ in the Κυρίῳ Lord, σύν with ὅλῳ all τῷ the οἴκῳ household αὐτοῦ, of him. καί And πολλοί many τῶν of the Κορινθίων Corinthians ἀκούοντες hearing, ἐπίστευον believed καί and ἐβαπτίζοντο. were baptized. Εἶπεν Said δέ now ὁ the Κύριος Lord ἐν in [the] νυκτί night δι ̓ through ὁράματος a vision τῷ - Παύλῳ· to Paul, Μή Not φοβοῦ, fear, ἀλλά but λάλει continue speaking, καί and μή not σιωπήσῃς, be silent, διότι because ἐγώ I εἰμί am μετά with σοῦ you, καί and οὐδείς no one ἐπιθήσεται will lay a hand on σοι you τοῦ - κακῶσαι to harm σε, you, διότι because λαός people ἐστί there are μοι to me πολύς many ἐν in τῇ the πόλει city ταύτῃ. this. Ἐκάθισεν He remained δέ now ἐνιαυτόν a year καί and μῆνας months ἕξ six, διδάσκων teaching ἐν among αὐτοῖς them τόν the λόγον word τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God.
Γαλλίωνος Gallio δέ however ἀνθυπάτου proconsul ὄντος being τῆς of Ἀχαΐας Achaia, κατεπέστησαν rose up against ὁμοθυμαδόν with one accord οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι Jews τῷ - Παύλῳ Paul, καί and ἤγαγον led αὐτόν him ἐπί to τό the βῆμα judgment seat, λέγοντες saying ὅτι -, Παρά Contrary to τόν the νόμον law, ἀναπείθει persuades οὗτος this [man] τούς - ἀνθρώπους men σέβεσθαι to worship τόν - Θεόν. God. Μέλλοντος Being about δέ now τοῦ - Παύλου Paul ἀνοίγειν to open τό the στόμα mouth, εἶπεν said ὁ - Γαλλίων Gallio πρός to τούς the Ἰουδαίους· Jews, εἰ If μέν indeed ἦν it was ἀδίκημα unrighteousness τὶ some ἤ or ῥᾳδιούργημα crime πονηρόν, wicked, ὦ O Ἰουδαῖοι, Jews, κατά according to λόγον reason ἄν - ἀνεσχόμην I would have endured with ὑμῶν, you; εἰ if δέ however ζητήματα a question ἐστίν it is περί about λόγου a word, καί and ὀνομάτων names, καί and νόμου law τοῦ - καθ ̓ in reference to ὑμᾶς, your, ὄψεσθε you will see αὐτοί· [to it] yourselves; κριτής a judge ἐγώ I τούτων of these things οὐ not βούλομαι resolve εἶναι. to be. καί And ἀπήλασεν he drove αὐτούς them ἀπό from τοῦ the βήματος. judgment seat. Ἐπιλαβόμενοι Having seized δέ then πάντες all [of them] Σωσθένην Sosthenes, τόν the ἀρχισυνάγωγον ruler of the synagogue, ἔτυπτον they began to beat [him] ἔμπροσθεν before τοῦ the βήματος· judgment seat. καί And οὐδέν nothing τούτων about these things τῷ - Γαλλίωνι to Gallio ἔμελεν. it mattered.
ὁ - δέ Now Παῦλος Paul, ἔτι more προσμείνας having remained ἡμέρας days ἱκανάς many, τοῖς the ἀδελφοῖς brothers ἀποταξάμενος having taken leave of, ἐξέπλει sailed away εἰς to τήν - Συρίαν, Syria — καί and σύν with αὐτῷ him Πρίσκιλλα Priscilla καί and Ἀκύλας, Aquila — κειράμενος having shaved ἐν in Κενχρεαῖς Cenchrea τήν the κεφαλήν, head; εἶχεν he had γάρ for εὐχήν. a vow. Κατήντησαν They came δέ now εἰς to Ἔφεσον Ephesus, κἀκείνους and them κατέλιπεν left αὐτοῦ, there. αὐτός He himself δέ then εἰσελθών having entered εἰς into τήν the συναγωγήν synagogue, διελέξατο he reasoned τοῖς with the Ἰουδαίοις. Jews. ἐρωτώντων Asking [him] δέ now αὐτῶν of them ἐπί for πλείονα a longer χρόνον time μεῖναι to remain, οὐ not ἐπένευσεν, he did consent, ἀλλά but ἀποταξάμενος having taken leave καί and εἰπών· having said, Πάλιν Again ἀνακάμψω I will return πρός to ὑμᾶς you, τοῦ - Θεοῦ God θέλοντος, willing, ἀνήχθη he sailed ἀπό from τῆς - Ἐφέσου, Ephesus, καί and κατελθών having landed εἰς at Καισάρειαν, Caesarea, ἀναβάς having gone up καί and ἀσπασάμενος having greeted τήν the ἐκκλησίαν church, κατέβη he went down εἰς to Ἀντιόχειαν. Antioch.
Καί And ποιήσας having stayed χρόνον time τινά some, ἐξῆλθεν he went forth, διερχόμενος passing through καθεξῆς successively τήν the Γαλατικήν Galatian χώραν region καί and Φρυγίαν, Phrygia, στηρίζων strengthening πάντας all τούς the μαθητάς. disciples.
Ἰουδαῖος A Jew δέ now τὶς certain, Ἀπολλῶς Apollos ὀνόματι, named, Ἀλεξανδρεύς of Alexandria τῷ - γένει, a native, ἀνήρ a man λόγιος, eloquent, κατήντησεν came εἰς to Ἔφεσον, Ephesus, δυνατός mighty ὤν being ἐν in ταῖς the γραφαῖς. Scriptures. οὗτος He ἦν was κατηχημένος instructed in τήν the ὁδόν way τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord. καί And ζέων being fervent τῷ - πνεύματι in spirit, ἐλάλει he was speaking καί and ἐδίδασκεν was teaching ἀκριβῶς earnestly τά the things περί concerning τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ, Jesus, ἐπιστάμενος knowing μόνον only τό the βάπτισμα baptism Ἰωάννου· of John. οὗτος He τέ then ἤρξατο began παρρησιάζεσθαι to speak boldly ἐν in τῇ the συναγωγῇ. synagogue. ἀκούσαντες Having heard δέ however αὐτοῦ him Πρίσκιλλα Priscilla καί and Ἀκύλας Aquila, προσελάβοντο they took to [them] αὐτόν him καί and ἀκριβέστερον more accurately αὐτῷ to him ἐξέθεντο expounded τήν the ὁδόν way τοῦ of Θεοῦ. God. Βουλομένου Resolving δέ then αὐτοῦ he διελθεῖν to pass through εἰς into τήν - Ἀχαΐαν, Achaia, προτρεψάμενοι having encouraged [him], οἱ the ἀδελφοί brothers ἔγραψαν wrote τοῖς to the μαθηταῖς disciples ἀποδέξασθαι to welcome αὐτόν, him, ὅς who παραγενόμενος having arrived, συνεβάλετο helped πολύ greatly τοῖς those πεπιστευκόσιν having believed διά through τῆς - χάριτος· grace. εὐτόνως Powerfully γάρ for τοῖς the Ἰουδαίοις Jews διακατηλέγχετο he was refuting δημοσίᾳ publicly, ἐπιδεικνύς showing διά by τῶν the γραφῶν Scriptures εἶναι to be τόν the Χριστόν Christ Ἰησοῦν. Jesus.
Ἐγένετο It came to pass δέ now, ἐν while τῷ - τόν - Ἀπολλῶ Apollos εἶναι was ἐν in Κορίνθῳ Corinth, Παῦλον Paul διελθόντα having passed through τά the ἀνωτερικά upper μέρη parts κατελθεῖν to come down εἰς to Ἔφεσον Ephesus, καί and εὑρεῖν having found τινάς certain μαθητάς disciples, εἶπεν he said τέ also πρός to αὐτούς· them, εἰ If Πνεῦμα [the] Spirit Ἅγιον Holy ἐλάβετε did you receive, πιστεύσαντες; having believed? οἱ - δέ And [they said] πρός to αὐτόν· him, Ἀλλ ̓ But οὐδ ̓ not even εἰ that [a] Πνεῦμα Spirit Ἅγιον Holy ἔστιν there is, ἠκούσαμεν. did we hear. Εἶπεν He said τέ· then, εἰς Into τί what οὖν then ἐβαπτίσθητε; were you baptized? οἱ - δέ And εἶπαν· they said, εἰς Into τό - Ἰωάννου John's βάπτισμα. baptism. Εἶπεν Said δέ then Παῦλος· Paul, Ἰωάννης John ἐβάπτισεν baptized βάπτισμα a baptism μετανοίας of repentance, τῷ the λαῷ people λέγων telling εἰς in τόν the [One] ἐρχόμενον coming μετ ̓ after αὐτόν him ἵνα that πιστεύσωσιν, they should believe, τοῦτ ̓ that ἔστιν is, εἰς in τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Jesus. Ἀκούσαντες Having heard δέ then, ἐβαπτίσθησαν they were baptized εἰς in τό the ὄνομα name τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord Ἰησοῦ, Jesus. καί And ἐπιθέντος having laid αὐτοῖς on them τοῦ - Παύλου Paul τάς the χεῖρας hands, ἦλθε came τό the Πνεῦμα Spirit τό - Ἅγιον Holy ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτούς, them; ἐλάλουν they were speaking τέ then γλώσσαις in tongues καί and ἐπροφήτευον. prophesying. ἦσαν There were δέ then οἱ the πάντες in all ἄνδρες men ὡσεί about δώδεκα. twelve.
Εἰσελθών Having entered δέ then εἰς into τήν the συναγωγήν synagogue, ἐπαρρησιάζετο he was speaking boldly ἐπί for μῆνας months τρεῖς three, διαλεγόμενος reasoning καί and πείθων persuading τά - περί concerning τῆς the βασιλείας kingdom τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God. ὡς When δέ however τινές some ἐσκληρύνοντο were hardened καί and ἠπείθουν were disbelieving, κακολογοῦντες speaking evil of τήν the Ὁδόν Way ἐνώπιον before τοῦ the πλήθους, multitude, ἀποστάς having departed ἀπ ̓ from αὐτῶν them, ἀφώρισεν he took separately τούς the μαθητάς disciples, καθ ̓ every ἡμέραν day διαλεγόμενος reasoning ἐν in τῇ the σχολῇ lecture hall Τυράννου. of Tyrannus.
