Ἐτάραξαν They stirred up δέ then τόν the ὄχλον crowd, καί and τούς the πολιτάρχας city authorities, ἀκούοντας hearing ταῦτα, these things. καί And λαβόντες having taken τό - ἱκανόν security παρά from τοῦ - Ἰάσονος Jason καί and τῶν the λοιπῶν rest, ἀπέλυσαν they let go αὐτούς. them.
οἱ - δέ And ἀδελφοί the brothers εὐθέως immediately διά by νυκτός night ἐξέπεμψαν sent away τόν - τέ both Παῦλον Paul καί and τόν - Σιλᾶν Silas εἰς to Βέροιαν, Berea, οἵτινες who παραγενόμενοι having arrived, εἰς into τήν the συναγωγήν synagogue τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews ἀπῄεσαν. went. οὗτοι These δέ now ἦσαν were εὐγενέστεροι more noble τῶν than those ἐν in Θεσσαλονίκῃ, Thessalonica, οἵτινες who ἐδέξαντο received τόν the λόγον word μετά with πάσης all προθυμίας readiness, καθ ̓ every ἡμέραν day ἀνακρίνοντες examining τάς the γραφάς Scriptures εἰ if ἔχοι were ταῦτα these things οὕτως. so. πολλοί Many μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἐκ of αὐτῶν them ἐπίστευσαν believed, καί and τῶν of the Ἑλληνίδων Grecian γυναικῶν women τῶν - εὐσχημόνων prominent καί and ἀνδρῶν men οὐ not ὀλίγοι. a few. ὡς When δέ however ἔγνωσαν knew οἱ those ἀπό from τῆς - Θεσσαλονίκης Thessalonica Ἰουδαῖοι Jews ὅτι that καί also ἐν in τῇ - Βεροίᾳ Berea κατηγγέλη was proclaimed ὑπό by τοῦ - Παύλου Paul ὁ the λόγος word τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God, ἦλθον they came κἀκεῖ there also, σαλεύοντες stirring up καί and ταράσσοντες agitating τούς the ὄχλους. crowds. εὐθέως Immediately δέ also τότε then, τόν - Παῦλον Paul ἐξαπέστειλαν sent away οἱ the ἀδελφοί brothers πορεύεσθαι to go ἕως as ἐπί to τήν the θάλασσαν, sea; ὑπέμειναν remained τέ but ὅ - τέ both Σιλᾶς Silas καί and ὁ - Τιμόθεος Timothy ἐκεῖ. there. οἱ Those δέ now καθιστάνοντες escorting τόν - Παῦλον Paul ἤγαγον brought [him] ἕως unto Ἀθηνῶν, Athens; καί and λαβόντες having received ἐντολήν a command πρός unto τόν - Σιλᾶν Silas καί and τόν - Τιμόθεον Timothy ἵνα that ὡς as τάχιστα quickly as possible ἔλθωσιν they should come πρός to αὐτόν him, ἐξῄεσαν. they departed.
ἐν In δέ now ταῖς - Ἀθήναις Athens, ἐκδεχομένου waiting for αὐτούς them τοῦ - Παύλου of Paul, παρωξύνετο was provoked τό the πνεῦμα spirit αὐτοῦ of him ἐν in αὐτῷ him, θεωροῦντος seeing κατείδωλον utterly idolatrous οὖσαν to be τήν the πόλιν. city. διελέγετο He was reasoning μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἐν in τῇ the συναγωγῇ synagogue τοῖς with the Ἰουδαίοις Jews καί and τοῖς those σεβομένοις worshiping, καί and ἐν in τῇ the ἀγορᾷ marketplace κατά on πᾶσαν every ἡμέραν day πρός with τούς those παρατυγχάνοντας. meeting [him]. Τινές Some δέ then καί also τῶν of the Ἐπικουρείων Epicureans καί and Στοϊκῶν Stoics, φιλοσόφων philosophers, συνέβαλλον encountered αὐτῷ, him. καί And τινές some ἔλεγον· were saying, Τί What ἄν - θέλοι may desire ὁ of the σπερμολόγος babbler οὗτος this λέγειν; to say? οἱ Others δέ· however, Ξένων Of foreign δαιμονίων gods δοκεῖ he seems καταγγελεύς a proclaimer εἶναι, to be, ὅτι because τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus καί and τήν the ἀνάστασιν resurrection εὐηγγελίζετο. he was proclaiming the gospel of. Ἐπιλαβόμενοι Having taken hold τέ also αὐτοῦ of him, ἐπί to τόν the Ἄρειον Ares πάγον Hill ἤγαγον they brought [him], λέγοντες· saying, Δυνάμεθα Are we able γνῶναι to know τίς what [is] ἡ the καινή new αὕτη this, ἡ which ὑπό by σοῦ you λαλουμένη is spoken, διδαχή; teaching? ξενίζοντα Strange things γάρ for τινά some εἰσφέρεις you are bringing εἰς to τάς the ἀκοάς ears ἡμῶν· of us. βουλόμεθα We resolve οὖν therefore γνῶναι to know τίνα what θέλει wish ταῦτα these things εἶναι. to be. Ἀθηναῖοι [The] Athenians δέ now πάντες all, καί and οἱ the ἐπιδημοῦντες visiting ξένοι strangers, εἰς in οὐδέν nothing ἕτερον else ηὐκαίρουν spent their time ἤ than λέγειν to tell τὶ something ἤ and ἀκούειν to hear τὶ something καινότερον. new.
Σταθείς Having stood δέ then ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἐν in μέσῳ [the] midst τοῦ of the Ἀρείου Ares Πάγου Hill, ἔφη· he was saying, Ἄνδρες Men, Ἀθηναῖοι, Athenians, κατά in πάντα all things ὡς as δεισιδαιμονεστέρους very religious ὑμᾶς you θεωρῶ. I behold. διερχόμενος Passing through γάρ for καί and ἀναθεωρῶν beholding τά the σεβάσματα objects of worship ὑμῶν of you, εὗρον I found καί even βωμόν an altar ἐν on ᾧ which ἐπεγέγραπτο· had been inscribed: ΑΓΝΩΣΤΩ To an unknown ΘΕΩ. God.
Ὅ Whom οὖν therefore ἀγνοοῦντες not knowing εὐσεβεῖτε, you worship, τοῦτο Him ἐγώ I καταγγέλλω proclaim ὑμῖν. to you. ὁ The Θεός God ὁ - ποιήσας having made τόν the κόσμον world καί and πάντα all things τά that [are] ἐν in αὐτῷ, it, οὗτος He οὐρανοῦ of heaven καί and γῆς earth ὑπάρχων being Κύριος Lord, οὐ not ἐν in χειροποιήτοις hand-made ναοῖς temples κατοικεῖ dwells, οὐδέ nor ὑπό by χειρῶν hands ἀνθρωπίνων of men θεραπεύεται is He served, προσδεόμενος as needing τινός, anything, αὐτός Himself διδούς giving πᾶσι to all ζωήν life καί and πνοήν breath, καί and τά the πάντα· all; ἐποίησεν He made τέ then ἐκ of ἑνός one, πᾶν every ἔθνος nation ἀνθρώπων of men, κατοικεῖν to dwell ἐπί upon παντός all προσώπου the face τῆς of the γῆς, earth, ὁρίσας having determined προστεταγμένους [the] appointed καιρούς times καί and τάς the ὁροθεσίας boundaries τῆς of the κατοικίας habitation αὐτῶν of them, ζητεῖν to seek τόν - Θεόν, God, εἰ if ἄρα perhaps γέ indeed ψηλαφήσειαν they might palpate for αὐτόν Him, καί and εὕροιεν, might find Him. καί And γέ indeed, οὐ not μακράν far ἀπό from ἑνός one ἑκάστου each ἡμῶν of us ὑπάρχοντα. He is.
ἐν In αὐτῷ Him γάρ for ζῶμεν we live καί and κινούμεθα move καί and ἐσμέν, are.’ ὡς As καί also τινές some τῶν of the καθ ̓ among ὑμᾶς you ποιητῶν poets εἰρήκασιν· have said, Τοῦ Of [Him] γάρ for καί also γένος offspring ἐσμέν. we are.’
γένος Offspring οὖν therefore ὑπάρχοντες being τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God, οὐ not ὀφείλομεν we ought νομίζειν to consider χρυσῷ to gold, ἤ or ἀργύρῳ to silver, ἤ or λίθῳ, to stone, χαράγματι a graven thing, τέχνης of craft καί and ἐνθυμήσεως imagination ἀνθρώπου, of man, τό the Θεῖον Divine Being εἶναι to be ὅμοιον. like. Τούς The μέν indeed οὖν therefore χρόνους times τῆς - ἀγνοίας of ignorance ὑπεριδών having overlooked ὁ - Θεός, God, τά - νῦν now παραγγέλλει He commands τοῖς - ἀνθρώποις men πάντας all πανταχοῦ everywhere μετανοεῖν, to repent, καθότι because ἔστησεν He set ἡμέραν a day ἐν in ᾗ which μέλλει He is about κρίνειν to judge τήν the οἰκουμένην world ἐν in δικαιοσύνῃ, righteousness, ἐν by ἀνδρί a man ᾧ whom ὥρισεν, He appointed, πίστιν a guarantee παρασχών having provided πᾶσιν to all, ἀναστήσας having raised αὐτόν Him ἐκ out from νεκρῶν. Ἀκούσαντες Having heard of δέ now ἀνάστασιν a resurrection νεκρῶν of [the] dead, οἱ some μέν indeed ἐχλεύαζον, began to mock [him]; οἱ some δέ however εἶπαν· said, Ἀκουσόμεθα We will hear σου you περί concerning τούτου this καί also πάλιν. again. οὕτως Thus ὁ - Παῦλος Paul ἐξῆλθεν went out ἐκ from μέσου [the] midst αὐτῶν. of them. τινές Some δέ however ἄνδρες men, κολληθέντες having joined themselves αὐτῷ to him, ἐπίστευσαν, believed, ἐν among οἷς whom καί also Διονύσιος [were] Dionysius ὁ the Ἀρεοπαγίτης Areopagite, καί and γυνή a woman ὀνόματι named Δάμαρις Damaris, καί and ἕτεροι others σύν with αὐτοῖς. them.
