Εἶπεν He said τέ then πρός to αὐτούς· them, Ἄνδρες Men, Ἰσραηλῖται, Israelites, προσέχετε take heed ἑαυτοῖς to yourselves ἐπί with τοῖς the ἀνθρώποις men τούτοις these, τί what μέλλετε you are about πράσσειν. to do. πρό Before γάρ for τούτων these τῶν - ἡμερῶν days ἀνέστη rose up Θευδᾶς Theudas, λέγων affirming εἶναι to be τινά somebody ἑαυτόν, himself, ᾧ to whom προσεκλίθη were joined ἀνδρῶν of men ἀριθμός number ὡς about τετρακοσίων· four hundred, ὅς who ἀνῃρέθη, was put to death, καί and πάντες all, ὅσοι as many as ἐπείθοντο were persuaded αὐτῷ by him, διελύθησαν were dispersed, καί and ἐγένοντο it came εἰς to οὐδέν. nothing. μετά After τοῦτον this man ἀνέστη rose up Ἰούδας Judas ὁ the Γαλιλαῖος Galilean ἐν in ταῖς the ἡμέραις days τῆς of the ἀπογραφῆς registration καί and ἀπέστησεν drew away λαόν people ὀπίσω after αὐτοῦ· him. κἀκεῖνος And he ἀπώλετο perished, καί and πάντες all ὅσοι as many as ἐπείθοντο were persuaded αὐτῷ by him, διεσκορπίσθησαν. were scattered. Καί And τά - νῦν now λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you, ἀπόστητε withdraw ἀπό from τῶν the ἀνθρώπων men τούτων these, καί and ἄφετε let alone αὐτούς· them, ὅτι for ἐάν if ᾖ be ἐκ from ἀνθρώπων men, ἡ the βουλή plan αὕτη this ἤ or τό the ἔργον work τοῦτο, this, καταλυθήσεται, it will be overthrown; εἰ if δέ however ἐκ from Θεοῦ God ἐστίν, it is, οὐ not δυνήσεσθε you will be able καταλῦσαι to overthrow αὐτούς, them, μήποτε lest ever καί also θεομάχοι fighting against God εὑρεθῆτε. You would be found. Ἐπείσθησαν They were persuaded δέ now αὐτῷ by him; καί and προσκαλεσάμενοι having called in τούς the ἀποστόλους apostles, δείραντες having beaten, παρήγγειλαν they commanded [them] μή not λαλεῖν to speak ἐπί in τῷ the ὀνόματι name τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus, καί and ἀπέλυσαν. released [them]. οἱ They μέν indeed οὖν therefore ἐπορεύοντο departed, χαίροντες rejoicing, ἀπό from προσώπου [the] presence τοῦ of the συνεδρίου, Council, ὅτι that κατηξιώθησαν they had been counted worthy ὑπέρ for τοῦ the Ὀνόματος Name ἀτιμασθῆναι, to suffer dishonor. πᾶσαν Every τέ then ἡμέραν day, ἐν in τῷ the ἱερῷ temple καί and κατ ̓ in οἶκον house, οὐ not ἐπαύοντο they ceased διδάσκοντες teaching καί and εὐαγγελιζόμενοι proclaiming the good news that τόν the Χριστόν Christ Ἰησοῦν. ἐν In δέ now ταῖς the ἡμέραις days ταύταις these, πληθυνόντων [as] are multiplying τῶν the μαθητῶν disciples, ἐγένετο there arose γογγυσμός a grumbling τῶν of the Ἑλληνιστῶν Hellenists πρός against τούς the Ἑβραίους, Hebrews, ὅτι because παρεθεωροῦντο were being overlooked ἐν in τῇ the διακονίᾳ distribution τῇ - καθημερινῇ daily αἱ the χῆραι widows αὐτῶν. of them. Προσκαλεσάμενοι Having called near δέ then οἱ the δώδεκα Twelve τό the πλῆθος multitude τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples, εἶπαν· they said, οὐκ Not ἀρεστόν desirable ἐστίν it is [for] ἡμᾶς us, καταλείψαντας having neglected τόν the λόγον word τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God, διακονεῖν to attend τραπέζαις. tables. ἐπισκέψασθε Select δέ, therefore, ἀδελφοί, brothers, ἄνδρας men ἐκ out from ὑμῶν yourselves μαρτυρουμένους being well attested, ἑπτά, seven πλήρεις full Πνεύματος of [the] Spirit καί and σοφίας, wisdom, οὕς whom καταστήσομεν we will appoint ἐπί over τῆς the χρείας task ταύτης, this. ἡμεῖς We δέ now τῇ in the προσευχῇ prayer καί and τῇ the διακονίᾳ ministry τοῦ of the λόγου word προσκαρτερήσομεν. will steadfastly continue. Καί And ἤρεσεν was pleasing ὁ the λόγος statement ἐνώπιον before παντός all τοῦ the πλήθους multitude; καί and ἐξελέξαντο they chose Στέφανον, Stephen, ἄνδρα a man πλήρης full πίστεως of faith καί and Πνεύματος [of the] Spirit Ἁγίου, holy, καί and Φίλιππον Philip, καί and Πρόχορον Prochorus, καί and Νικάνορα Nicanor, καί and Τίμωνα Timon, καί and Παρμενᾶν Parmenas, καί and Νικόλαον Nicolas προσήλυτον a convert Ἀντιοχέα, of Antioch, οὕς whom ἔστησαν they set ἐνώπιον before τῶν the ἀποστόλων, apostles; καί and προσευξάμενοι having prayed, ἐπέθηκαν they laid αὐτοῖς on them τάς the χεῖρας. hands. Καί And ὁ the λόγος word τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God ηὔξανεν continued to increase, καί and ἐπληθύνετο was multiplied ὁ the ἀριθμός number τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples ἐν in Ἰερουσαλήμ Jerusalem σφόδρα, exceedingly; πολύς a great τέ then ὄχλος multitude τῶν of the ἱερέων priests ὑπήκουον were becoming obedient τῇ to the πίστει. faith.
Στέφανος Stephen δέ now, πλήρης full χάριτος grace καί and δυνάμεως power, ἐποίει was performing τέρατα wonders καί and σημεῖα signs μεγάλα great ἐν among τῷ the λαῷ. people. ἀνέστησαν Arose δέ however τινές certain τῶν of those ἐκ from τῆς the συναγωγῆς synagogue τῆς - λεγομένης called Λιβερτίνων Freedmen, καί including Κυρηναίων Cyrenians καί and Ἀλεξανδρέων Alexandrians καί and τῶν of those ἀπό from Κιλικίας Cilicia καί and Ἀσίας Asia, συζητοῦντες disputing τῷ with Στεφάνῳ, Stephen. καί And οὐ not ἴσχυον they were able ἀντιστῆναι to withstand τῇ the σοφίᾳ wisdom καί and τῷ the Πνεύματι Spirit ᾧ by whom ἐλάλει. he was speaking. Τότε Then ὑπέβαλον they suborned ἄνδρας men, λέγοντας saying ὅτι -, Ἀκηκόαμεν We have heard αὐτοῦ him λαλοῦντος speaking ῥήματα words βλάσφημα blasphemous εἰς against Μωϋσῆν Moses καί and τόν - Θεόν. God. συνεκίνησαν They stirred up τέ then τόν the λαόν people καί and τούς the πρεσβυτέρους elders καί and τούς the γραμματεῖς scribes, καί and ἐπιστάντες having come upon [him], συνήρπασαν they seized αὐτόν him καί and ἤγαγον brought [him] εἰς to τό the συνέδριον, Council. Ἔστησαν They set τέ also μάρτυρας witnesses ψευδεῖς false, λέγοντας· saying, ὁ The ἄνθρωπος man οὗτος this, οὐ not παύεται does stop λαλῶν speaking ῥήματα words κατά against τοῦ the τόπου place τοῦ - ἁγίου holy τούτου this καί and τοῦ the νόμου· law; ἀκηκόαμεν we have heard γάρ for αὐτοῦ him λέγοντος saying ὅτι that Ἰησοῦς Jesus ὁ of Ναζωραῖος Nazareth οὗτος this καταλύσει will destroy τόν the τόπον place τοῦτον this καί and ἀλλάξει will change τά the ἔθη customs ἅ that παρέδωκεν delivered ἡμῖν to us Μωϋσῆς. Καί And ἀτενίσαντες having looked intently εἰς on αὐτόν him, πάντες all οἱ - καθεζόμενοι sitting ἐν in τῷ the συνεδρίῳ Council εἶδον saw τό the πρόσωπον face αὐτοῦ of him ὡσεί as πρόσωπον [the] face ἀγγέλου. of an angel. Εἶπεν Said δέ then ὁ the ἀρχιερεύς· high priest, εἰ If ταῦτα these things οὕτως so ἔχει; are? ὁ - δέ And ἔφη· he began to speak: Ἄνδρες Men, ἀδελφοί brothers, καί and πατέρες, fathers, ἀκούσατε. listen! ὁ The Θεός God τῆς - δόξης of glory ὤφθη appeared τῷ to the πατρί father ἡμῶν of us Ἀβραάμ Abraham, ὄντι being ἐν in τῇ - Μεσοποταμίᾳ Mesopotamia, πρίν before ἤ rather κατοικῆσαι dwelling αὐτόν his ἐν in Χαρράν Haran, καί and εἶπεν He said πρός to αὐτόν· him, Ἔξελθε Go out ἐκ from τῆς the γῆς country σου of you καί and ἐκ from τῆς the συγγενείας kindred σου, of you, καί and δεῦρο come εἰς into τήν the γῆν land ἥν which ἄν - σοι to you δείξω. I will show.’ τότε Then ἐξελθών having gone out ἐκ from γῆς [the] land Χαλδαίων of Chaldeans, κατῴκησεν he dwelt ἐν in Χαρράν. Haran. κἀκεῖθεν And from there, μετά after τό - ἀποθανεῖν died τόν the πατέρα father αὐτοῦ of him, μετῴκισεν He removed αὐτόν him εἰς into τήν the γῆν land ταύτην this, εἰς in ἥν which ὑμεῖς you νῦν now κατοικεῖτε, dwell. Καί And οὐ not ἔδωκεν He did give αὐτῷ to him κληρονομίαν an inheritance ἐν in αὐτῇ it, οὐδέ not even βῆμα [the] length ποδός of a foot; καί but ἐπηγγείλατο He promised δοῦναι to give αὐτῷ to him εἰς for κατάσχεσιν a possession αὐτήν it, καί and τῷ to the σπέρματι descendants αὐτοῦ of him μετ ̓ after αὐτόν, him, οὐ not ὄντος there being αὐτῷ to him τέκνου. a child. ἐλάλησεν Spoke δέ however οὕτως thus ὁ - Θεός God ὅτι that ἔσται will be τό the σπέρμα seed αὐτοῦ of him πάροικον a sojourner ἐν in γῇ a land ἀλλοτρίᾳ strange, καί and δουλώσουσιν they will enslave αὐτό it, καί and κακώσουσιν will mistreat [it] ἔτη years τετρακόσια· four hundred. Καί And τό the ἔθνος nation ᾧ to which ἐάν if δουλεύσουσιν they will be in bondage, κρινῶ will judge ἐγώ, I, ὁ - Θεός God εἶπεν, said, Καί and μετά after ταῦτα these things ἐξελεύσονται they will come forth καί and λατρεύσουσιν will serve μοι Me ἐν in τῷ the τόπῳ place τούτῳ. this.’ Καί And ἔδωκεν He gave αὐτῷ to him διαθήκην [the] covenant περιτομῆς· of circumcision; καί and οὕτως thus ἐγέννησεν he begat τόν - Ἰσαάκ Isaac καί and περιέτεμεν circumcised αὐτόν him τῇ on the ἡμέρᾳ day τῇ - ὀγδόῃ, eighth; καί and Ἰσαάκ Isaac τόν - Ἰακώβ, Jacob, καί and Ἰακώβ Jacob τούς the δώδεκα twelve πατριάρχας. patriarchs.
Καί And οἱ the πατριάρχαι patriarchs, ζηλώσαντες having envied τόν - Ἰωσήφ Joseph, ἀπέδοντο sold [him] εἰς into Αἴγυπτον. Egypt. καί But ἦν was ὁ - Θεός God μετ ̓ with αὐτοῦ him, καί and ἐξείλατο rescued αὐτόν him ἐκ out of πασῶν all τῶν the θλίψεων tribulations αὐτοῦ of him, καί and ἔδωκεν gave αὐτῷ him χάριν favor καί and σοφίαν wisdom ἐναντίον before Φαραώ Pharaoh, βασιλέως king Αἰγύπτου of Egypt; καί and κατέστησεν he appointed αὐτόν him ἡγούμενον ruler ἐπ ̓ over Αἴγυπτον Egypt, καί and ἐφ ̓ over ὅλον all τόν the οἶκον house αὐτοῦ. of him. Καθώς As δέ now ἤγγιζεν was drawing near ὁ the χρόνος time τῆς of the ἐπαγγελίας promise ἧς that ὡμολόγησεν had made ὁ - Θεός God τῷ - Ἀβραάμ, to Abraham, ηὔξησεν increased ὁ the λαός people καί and ἐπληθύνθη multiplied ἐν in Αἰγύπτῳ Egypt, ἄχρι until οὗ that ἀνέστη there arose βασιλεύς king ἕτερος another ἐπ ̓ over Αἴγυπτον Egypt, ὅς who οὐ not ᾔδει knew τόν - Ἰωσήφ. Joseph. οὗτος He κατασοφισάμενος having dealt treacherously with τό the γένος race ἡμῶν of us, ἐκάκωσεν he mistreated τούς the πατέρας fathers ἡμῶν of us, τοῦ - ποιεῖν making [them] τά the βρέφη infants ἔκθετα abandon αὐτῶν of them εἰς unto τό the μή not ζωογονεῖσθαι. they would live. ἐν In ᾧ that καιρῷ time ἐγεννήθη was born Μωϋσῆς Moses, καί and ἦν he was ἀστεῖος beautiful τῷ - Θεῷ· to God, ὅς who ἀνετράφη was brought up μῆνας months τρεῖς three ἐν in τῷ the οἴκῳ house τοῦ of the πατρός, father. ἐκτεθέντος Having been set outside δέ then αὐτοῦ he, ἀνείλατο took up αὐτόν him ἡ the θυγάτηρ daughter Φαραώ of Pharaoh, καί and ἀνεθρέψατο brought up αὐτόν him ἑαυτῇ for herself εἰς for υἱόν. a son. καί And ἐπαιδεύθη was instructed Μωϋσῆς Moses ἐν in πάσῃ all σοφίᾳ [the] wisdom Αἰγυπτίων, of [the] Egyptians; ἦν he was δέ now δυνατός mighty ἐν in λόγοις words καί and ἔργοις deeds αὐτοῦ. of him. ὡς When δέ then ἐπληροῦτο was fulfilled αὐτῷ to him τεσσερακονταέτης of forty years χρόνος, a period, ἀνέβη it came ἐπί into τήν the καρδίαν mind αὐτοῦ of him ἐπισκέψασθαι to visit τούς the ἀδελφούς brothers αὐτοῦ of him, τούς the υἱούς sons Ἰσραήλ. of Israel. καί And ἰδών having seen τινά a certain one ἀδικούμενον being wronged, ἠμύνατο he defended [him] καί and ἐποίησεν did ἐκδίκησιν vengeance τῷ for the [one] καταπονουμένῳ being oppressed, πατάξας having struck down τόν the Αἰγύπτιον.
