Ὅτε When οὖν therefore ἤκουσεν heard ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate τοῦτον this τόν - λόγον, word, μᾶλλον [the] more ἐφοβήθη, he was afraid. καί And εἰσῆλθεν he went εἰς into τό the πραιτώριον Praetorium πάλιν again, καί and λέγει he says τῷ - Ἰησοῦ· to Jesus, Πόθεν From where εἶ are σύ; You? ὁ - δέ But Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀπόκρισιν an answer οὐ not ἔδωκεν did give αὐτῷ. him. Λέγει Says οὖν therefore αὐτῷ to Him ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Ἐμοί To me οὐ not λαλεῖς; speak You? οὐ Not οἶδας know You ὅτι that ἐξουσίαν authority ἔχω I have ἀπολῦσαι to release σε You, καί and ἐξουσίαν authority ἔχω I have σταυρῶσαι to crucify σε; You? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered αὐτῷ him Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, οὐκ Not εἶχες you would have ἐξουσίαν authority κατ ̓ also ἐμοῦ Me οὐδεμίαν against, εἰ if μή not ἦν it were δεδομένον given σοι to you ἄνωθεν· from above. διά Because of τοῦτο this, ὁ the [one] παραδούς having delivered up μέ Me σοι to you, μείζονα greater ἁμαρτίαν sin ἔχει. has. ἐκ Out of τούτου this ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate ἐζήτει was seeking ἀπολῦσαι to release αὐτόν· Him; οἱ - δέ but Ἰουδαῖοι the Jews ἐκραύγασαν cried out, λέγοντες· saying, Ἐάν If τοῦτον this [man] ἀπολύσῃς, you release, οὐ not εἶ you are φίλος a friend τοῦ - Καίσαρος· of Caesar. πᾶς Everyone ὁ - βασιλέα a king ἑαυτόν himself ποιῶν making, ἀντιλέγει speaks against τῷ - Καίσαρι. Caesar. ὁ - οὖν Therefore Πιλᾶτος Pilate, ἀκούσας having heard τῶν the λόγων words τούτων these, ἤγαγεν brought ἔξω out τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus, καί and ἐκάθισεν sat down ἐπί upon βήματος [the] judgment seat εἰς at τόπον a place λεγόμενον called Λιθόστρωτον, [the] Stone Pavement; Ἑβραϊστί in Hebrew δέ now, Γαββαθα. Gabbatha. ἦν It was δέ now Παρασκευή the Day of Preparation τοῦ of the πάσχα, Passover; ὥρα [the] hour ἦν was ὡς about ἕκτη. the sixth. καί And λέγει he says τοῖς to the Ἰουδαίοις· Jews, Ἴδε Behold ὁ the Βασιλεύς king ὑμῶν. of you! Ἐκραύγασαν They cried out οὖν therefore, Ἐκεῖνοι· With Him Ἆρον away, ἆρον, away! σταύρωσον Crucify αὐτόν. Him! Λέγει Says αὐτοῖς to them ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Τόν The Βασιλέα King ὑμῶν of you σταυρώσω; shall I crucify? Ἀπεκρίθησαν Answered οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς· chief priests, οὐκ Not ἔχομεν we have βασιλέα a king, εἰ if μή not Καίσαρα. Caesar. Τότε Then οὖν therefore παρέδωκεν he delivered αὐτόν Him αὐτοῖς to them, ἵνα that σταυρωθῇ. He might be crucified.
Παρέλαβον They took οὖν therefore τόν - Ἰησοῦν, Jesus. Καί And βαστάζων bearing ἑαυτῷ [His] own τόν - σταυρόν cross, ἐξῆλθεν He went out εἰς to τόν the λεγόμενον called Κρανίου of the Skull τόπον, Place, ὅ which λέγεται is called Ἑβραϊστί in Hebrew Γολγοθᾶ, Golgotha, ὅπου where αὐτόν Him ἐσταύρωσαν, they crucified, καί and μετ ̓ with αὐτοῦ Him ἄλλους others δύο two, ἐντεῦθεν on this side καί and ἐντεῦθεν, on that side, μέσον in between δέ now τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Jesus. Ἔγραψεν Wrote δέ then καί also τίτλον a title ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate καί and ἔθηκεν put [it] ἐπί on τοῦ the σταυροῦ· cross. ἦν It was δέ now γεγραμμένον· written: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Jesus Ο of ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ Nazareth, Ο the ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ King ΤΩΝ of the ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ. Jews. Τοῦτον This οὖν therefore τόν the τίτλον title πολλοί many ἀνέγνωσαν read τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων, Jews, ὅτι for ἐγγύς near ἦν was ὁ the τόπος place, τῆς the πόλεως city, ὅπου where ἐσταυρώθη was crucified ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, καί and ἦν it was γεγραμμένον written Ἑβραϊστί, in Hebrew, Ῥωμαϊστί, in Latin, Ἑλληνιστί. in Greek. ἔλεγον Were saying οὖν therefore τῷ - Πιλάτῳ to Pilate οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων· Jews, Μή Not γράφε· write, ὁ The Βασιλεύς King τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων, Jews, ἀλλ ̓ but ὅτι that ἐκεῖνος He εἶπεν· said, Βασιλεύς King εἰμί I am τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων. Jews. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Ὅ What γέγραφα, I have written, γέγραφα. I have written.
οἱ The οὖν then στρατιῶται, soldiers, ὅτε when ἐσταύρωσαν they crucified τόν - Ἰησοῦν, Jesus, ἔλαβον took τά the ἱμάτια garments αὐτοῦ of Him καί and ἐποίησαν made τέσσαρα four μέρη, parts, ἑκάστῳ to each στρατιώτῃ soldier μέρος, a part, καί and also τόν the χιτῶνα. tunic. ἦν Was δέ now ὁ the χιτών tunic ἄραφος, seamless, ἐκ from τῶν the ἄνωθεν top ὑφαντός woven δι ̓ throughout ὅλου. all. εἶπαν They said οὖν therefore πρός to ἀλλήλους· one another, Μή Not σχίσωμεν let us tear up αὐτόν, it, ἀλλά but λάχωμεν let us cast lots περί for αὐτοῦ it, τίνος whose ἔσται· it will be, ἵνα that ἡ the γραφή Scripture πληρωθῇ might be fulfilled ἡ that λέγουσα· said: Διεμερίσαντο They divided τά the ἱμάτια garments μου of Me ἑαυτοῖς among them, καί and ἐπί for τόν the ἱματισμόν clothing μου of Me ἔβαλον they cast κλῆρον. a lot.”
οἱ The μέν indeed οὖν therefore στρατιῶται soldiers ταῦτα these things ἐποίησαν. did.
Εἱστήκεισαν Had been standing δέ now παρά by τῷ the σταυρῷ cross τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus ἡ the μήτηρ mother αὐτοῦ of Him, καί and ἡ the ἀδελφή sister τῆς of the μητρός mother αὐτοῦ, of Him, Μαρία Mary ἡ the [wife] τοῦ - Κλωπᾶ of Clopas, καί and Μαρία Mary ἡ - Μαγδαληνή. Magdalene. Ἰησοῦς Jesus οὖν therefore, ἰδών having seen τήν [His] μητέρα mother καί and τόν the μαθητήν disciple παρεστῶτα standing by ὅν whom ἠγάπα, He loved, λέγει says τῇ to μητρί· [His] mother, Γύναι, Woman, ἴδε behold, ὁ the υἱός son σου. of you. εἶτα Then λέγει He says τῷ to the μαθητῇ· disciple, Ἴδε Behold ἡ the μήτηρ mother σου. of you. καί And ἀπ ̓ from ἐκείνης that τῆς - ὥρας hour ἔλαβεν took ὁ the μαθητής disciple αὐτήν her εἰς to τά the ἴδια. own.
Μετά After τοῦτο this, εἰδώς knowing ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ὅτι that ἤδη now πάντα all things τετέλεσται, had been accomplished, ἵνα so that τελειωθῇ might be fulfilled ἡ the γραφή, Scripture, λέγει· He says, Διψῶ. I thirst. σκεῦος A vessel ἔκειτο had been set [there] ὄξους of sour wine μεστόν· full; σπόγγον a sponge οὖν therefore μεστόν filled τοῦ with ὄξους sour wine, ὑσσώπῳ a stalk of hyssop περιθέντες having put on, προσήνεγκαν they brought αὐτοῦ it τῷ to the στόματι. mouth. ὅτε When οὖν therefore ἔλαβεν took τό the ὄξος sour wine ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus, εἶπεν· He said, Τετέλεσται, It has been finished. καί And κλίνας having bowed τήν the κεφαλήν head, παρέδωκεν He yielded up τό the πνεῦμα. spirit.
οἱ - οὖν Therefore Ἰουδαῖοι, the Jews, ἐπεί because Παρασκευή [the] Preparation ἦν, it was, ἵνα so that μή not μείνῃ would remain ἐπί on τοῦ the σταυροῦ cross τά the σώματα bodies ἐν on τῷ the σαββάτῳ, Sabbath — ἦν was γάρ for μεγάλη a high ἡ - ἡμέρα day ἐκείνου that τοῦ - σαββάτου, Sabbath — ἠρώτησαν asked τόν - Πιλᾶτον Pilate ἵνα that κατεαγῶσιν might be broken αὐτῶν their τά - σκέλη legs, καί and ἀρθῶσιν. they might be taken away. ἦλθον Came οὖν therefore οἱ the στρατιῶται soldiers, καί and τοῦ of the μέν indeed πρώτου first κατέαξαν broke τά the σκέλη legs, καί and τοῦ of the ἄλλου other τοῦ - συσταυρωθέντος having been crucified with αὐτῷ· Him; ἐπί to δέ however τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus ἐλθόντες, having come, ὡς when εἶδον they saw ἤδη already αὐτόν Him τεθνηκότα, having been dead, οὐ not κατέαξαν they did break αὐτοῦ His τά - σκέλη, legs. ἀλλ ̓ But εἷς one τῶν of the στρατιωτῶν soldiers λόγχῃ with a spear αὐτοῦ His τήν - πλευράν side ἔνυξεν, pierced, καί and ἐξῆλθεν came out εὐθύς immediately αἷμα blood καί and ὕδωρ. water. καί And ὁ the [one] ἑωρακώς having seen μεμαρτύρηκεν, has borne witness, καί and ἀληθινή true αὐτοῦ of him ἐστίν is ἡ the μαρτυρία, testimony. καί And ἐκεῖνος He οἶδεν knows ὅτι that ἀληθῆ truth λέγει, he is speaking, ἵνα that καί also ὑμεῖς you πιστεύητε. might believe. Ἐγένετο Took place γάρ for ταῦτα these things ἵνα so that ἡ the γραφή Scripture πληρωθῇ· might be fulfilled: Ὀστοῦν Bone οὐ not one συντριβήσεται will be broken αὐτοῦ. of Him.” καί And πάλιν again, ἑτέρα another γραφή Scripture λέγει· says: Ὄψονται They will look εἰς on ὅν the [One] ἐξεκέντησαν. they have pierced.”
Μετά After δέ then ταῦτα these things, ἠρώτησεν asked τόν - Πιλᾶτον Pilate Ἰωσήφ Joseph ὁ - ἀπό from Ἁριμαθαίας, Arimathea, ὤν being μαθητής a disciple τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus — κεκρυμμένος concealed δέ however διά through τόν the φόβον fear τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων, Jews — ἵνα that ἄρῃ he might take away τό the σῶμα body τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ· of Jesus; καί and ἐπέτρεψεν gave permission ὁ - Πιλᾶτος. Pilate. ἦλθεν He came οὖν therefore καί and ἦρεν took away τό the σῶμα body αὐτοῦ. of Him. ἦλθεν Came δέ now καί also Νικόδημος, Nicodemus, ὁ the [one] ἐλθών having come πρός to αὐτόν Him νυκτός by night τό at the πρῶτον, first, φέρων bearing μίγμα a mixture σμύρνης of myrrh καί and ἀλόης aloes, ὡς about λίτρας litras ἑκατόν. a hundred. ἔλαβον They took οὖν therefore τό the σῶμα body τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus καί and ἔδησαν bound αὐτό it ὀθονίοις in linen cloths, μετά with τῶν the ἀρωμάτων, spices, καθώς as ἔθος [the] custom ἐστίν is τοῖς among the Ἰουδαίοις Jews ἐνταφιάζειν. to prepare for burial. Ἦν There was δέ now ἐν in τῷ the τόπῳ place ὅπου where ἐσταυρώθη He was crucified κῆπος, a garden, καί and ἐν in τῷ the κήπῳ garden μνημεῖον a tomb καινόν new, ἐν in ᾧ which οὐδέπω not yet οὐδείς no one ἦν was τεθειμένος· laid. ἐκεῖ There οὖν therefore, διά on account of τήν the Παρασκευήν Preparation τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων, Jews, ὅτι because ἐγγύς near ἦν was τό the μνημεῖον, tomb, ἔθηκαν they laid τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Jesus.
Τῇ - δέ Now μιᾷ the first [day] τῶν of the σαββάτων week, Μαρία Mary ἡ - Μαγδαληνή Magdalene ἔρχεται comes πρωΐ early, σκοτίας dark ἔτι still οὔσης it being, εἰς to τό the μνημεῖον tomb, καί and βλέπει she sees τόν the λίθον stone ἠρμένον having been removed ἐκ from τοῦ the μνημείου. tomb. τρέχει She runs οὖν therefore καί and ἔρχεται comes πρός to Σίμωνα Simon Πέτρον Peter καί and πρός to τόν the ἄλλον other μαθητήν disciple, ὅν whom ἐφίλει loved ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus, καί and λέγει she says αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἦραν They have taken away τόν the Κύριον Lord ἐκ out of τοῦ the μνημείου tomb, καί and οὐ not οἴδαμεν we know ποῦ where ἔθηκαν they have laid αὐτόν. Him. Ἐξῆλθεν Went forth οὖν therefore ὁ - Πέτρος Peter καί and ὁ the ἄλλος other μαθητής disciple, καί and ἤρχοντο were coming εἰς to τό the μνημεῖον. tomb. ἔτρεχον Were running δέ now οἱ the δύο two ὁμοῦ· together, καί and ὁ the ἄλλος other μαθητής disciple προέδραμεν ran ahead τάχιον faster τοῦ - Πέτρου than Peter καί and ἦλθεν came πρῶτος first εἰς to τό the μνημεῖον, tomb. καί And παρακύψας having stooped down, βλέπει he sees κείμενα lying [there] τά the ὀθόνια, linen cloths; οὐ not μέντοι however εἰσῆλθεν. he entered. Ἔρχεται Comes οὖν then καί also Σίμων Simon Πέτρος Peter ἀκολουθῶν following αὐτῷ him, καί and εἰσῆλθεν he entered εἰς into τό the μνημεῖον, tomb καί and θεωρεῖ sees τά the ὀθόνια linen cloths κείμενα, lying [there], καί and τό the σουδάριον, soudarion, ὅ which ἦν was ἐπί upon τῆς the κεφαλῆς head αὐτοῦ, of Him, οὐ not μετά with τῶν the ὀθονίων linen cloths κείμενον lying, ἀλλά but χωρίς by itself ἐντετυλιγμένον having been folded up εἰς in ἕνα a τόπον. place. τότε Then οὖν therefore εἰσῆλθεν entered καί also ὁ the ἄλλος other μαθητής disciple, ὁ - ἐλθών having come πρῶτος first εἰς to τό the μνημεῖον tomb, καί and εἶδεν he saw καί and ἐπίστευσεν· believed; οὐδέπω not yet γάρ for ᾔδεισαν understood they τήν the γραφήν Scripture ὅτι that δεῖ it behooves αὐτόν Him ἐκ out from νεκρῶν [the] dead ἀναστῆναι. to rise. Ἀπῆλθον Went away οὖν therefore πάλιν again πρός to αὑτούς their [homes] οἱ the μαθηταί. disciples.
Μαρία Mary δέ however εἱστήκει stood πρός at τῷ the μνημείῳ tomb ἔξω outside κλαίουσα. weeping. ὡς As οὖν therefore ἔκλαιεν, she was weeping, παρέκυψεν she stooped down εἰς into τό the μνημεῖον tomb, καί and θεωρεῖ she sees δύο two ἀγγέλους angels ἐν in λευκοῖς white καθεζομένους, sitting, ἕνα one πρός at τῇ the κεφαλῇ head καί and ἕνα one πρός at τοῖς the ποσίν, feet, ὅπου where ἔκειτο had lain τό the σῶμα body τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ. of Jesus. Καί And λέγουσιν say αὐτῇ to her ἐκεῖνοι· they, Γύναι, Woman, τί why κλαίεις; weep you? Λέγει She says αὐτοῖς to them, Ὅτι Because Ἦραν they have taken away τόν the Κύριον Lord μου, of me, καί and οὐ not οἶδα I know ποῦ where ἔθηκαν they have laid αὐτόν. Him. Ταῦτα These things εἰποῦσα having said, ἐστράφη she turned εἰς back τά - ὀπίσω around, καί and θεωρεῖ she sees τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus ἑστῶτα standing [there], καί and οὐ not ᾔδει had known ὅτι that Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἐστίν. it is. λέγει Says αὐτῇ to her Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Γύναι, Woman, τί why κλαίεις; do you weep? τίνα Whom ζητεῖς; do you seek? Ἐκείνη She, δοκοῦσα thinking ὅτι that ὁ the κηπουρός gardener ἐστίν He is, λέγει says αὐτῷ· to Him, Κύριε, Sir, εἰ if σύ you ἐβάστασας have carried off αὐτόν, him, εἰπέ tell μοι me ποῦ where ἔθηκας you have laid αὐτόν, Him, κἀγώ and I αὐτόν him ἀρῶ. will take away.
