Ἀπεκρίθη Answered αὐτῷ him Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, εἰ If κακῶς evil ἐλάλησα, I spoke, μαρτύρησον bear witness περί concerning τοῦ the κακοῦ· evil; εἰ if δέ however καλῶς, rightly, τί why με Me δέρεις; strike you? Ἄγουσιν They are leading οὖν then τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus ἀπό from τοῦ - Καϊάφα Caiaphas εἰς into τό the πραιτώριον· Praetorium. ἦν It was δέ now πρωΐ· early, καί and αὐτοί they οὐ not εἰσῆλθον entered εἰς into τό the πραιτώριον, Praetorium ἵνα so that μή not μιανθῶσιν they should be defiled, ἀλλά but φάγωσιν might eat τό the πάσχα. Εἶπον Said αὐτῷ to him οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι· Jews, Ἡμῖν To us οὐ not ἔξεστιν it is permitted ἀποκτεῖναι to put to death οὐδένα· no one ἵνα that ὁ the λόγος word τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus πληρωθῇ might be fulfilled, ὅν which εἶπεν He had spoken, σημαίνων signifying ποίῳ what θανάτῳ death ἤμελλεν He was about ἀποθνήσκειν. to die.

Εἰσῆλθεν Entered οὖν therefore πάλιν again εἰς into τό the πραιτώριον Praetorium ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate, καί and ἐφώνησεν he called τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus καί and εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to Him, Σύ You εἶ are ὁ the Βασιλεύς King τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων; Jews? Εἶπεν Said οὖν therefore αὐτῷ to Him ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Οὐκοῦν Then βασιλεύς a king εἶ are σύ; You? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Σύ You λέγεις say ὅτι that βασιλεύς a king εἰμί. I am. ἐγώ I εἰς for τοῦτο this γεγέννημαι have been born, καί and εἰς for τοῦτο this ἐλήλυθα I have come εἰς into τόν the κόσμον, world, ἵνα that μαρτυρήσω I may bear witness τῇ to the ἀληθείᾳ· truth. πᾶς Everyone ὁ - ὤν being ἐκ of τῆς the ἀληθείας truth ἀκούει hears μου of Me τῆς the φωνῆς. voice. Καί And τοῦτο this εἰπών having said, πάλιν again ἐξῆλθεν he went out πρός to τούς the Ἰουδαίους Jews καί and λέγει says αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἐγώ I οὐδεμίαν no εὑρίσκω find ἐν in αὐτῷ Him αἰτίαν. guilt. ἔστιν It is δέ however συνήθεια a custom ὑμῖν with you ἵνα that ἕνα one ἀπολύσω I should release ὑμῖν to you ἐν at τῷ the πάσχα· Passover; βούλεσθε wish you οὖν therefore ἀπολύσω I should release ὑμῖν to you τόν the Βασιλέα King τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων; Jews? Ἐκραύγασαν They cried out οὖν then πάλιν again λέγοντες· saying, Μή Not τοῦτον this one, ἀλλά but τόν - Βαραββᾶν. Barabbas! ἦν Was δέ now ὁ - Βαραββᾶς Barabbas λῃστής. an insurrectionist.

Τότε At that time οὖν therefore ἔλαβεν took ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus καί and ἐμαστίγωσεν. flogged [Him]. καί And οἱ the στρατιῶται soldiers, πλέξαντες having twisted together στέφανον a crown ἐκ of ἀκανθῶν thorns, ἐπέθηκαν put [it] on αὐτοῦ of Him τῇ the κεφαλῇ head, καί and ἱμάτιον a robe πορφυροῦν purple περιέβαλον cast around αὐτόν Him, καί and ἤρχοντο they began coming up πρός to αὐτόν Him καί and ἔλεγον· saying, Χαῖρε Hail, ὁ - Βασιλεύς King τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων· Jews! καί And ἐδίδοσαν they kept giving αὐτῷ Him ῥαπίσματα. blows with the palm. Καί And ἐξῆλθεν went forth πάλιν again ἔξω outside ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate, καί and λέγει he says αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἴδε Behold, ἄγω I bring ὑμῖν to you αὐτόν Him ἔξω, out, ἵνα so that γνῶτε you may know ὅτι that οὐδεμίαν no αἰτίαν guilt εὑρίσκω I find ἐν in αὐτῷ. Him. ἐξῆλθεν Went forth οὖν therefore ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἔξω, outside, φορῶν wearing τόν the ἀκάνθινον thorny στέφανον crown καί and τό the πορφυροῦν purple ἱμάτιον. robe. καί And λέγει he says αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἰδού Behold ὁ the ἄνθρωπος. man!

Ὅτε When οὖν therefore εἶδον saw αὐτόν Him οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests καί and οἱ the ὑπηρέται officers, ἐκραύγασαν they cried out λέγοντες· saying, Σταύρωσον Crucify! σταύρωσον. Crucify! Λέγει Says αὐτοῖς to them ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Λάβετε Take αὐτόν Him ὑμεῖς yourselves καί and σταυρώσατε· crucify [Him]; ἐγώ I γάρ for οὐ no εὑρίσκω find ἐν in αὐτῷ Him αἰτίαν. guilt. Ἀπεκρίθησαν Answered αὐτῷ him οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι· Jews, Ἡμεῖς We νόμον a law ἔχομεν have, καί and κατά according to τόν the νόμον law, ὀφείλει He ought ἀποθανεῖν, to die, ὅτι because Υἱόν [the] Son Θεοῦ of God ἑαυτόν Himself ἐποίησεν. He made. Ὅτε When οὖν therefore ἤκουσεν heard ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate τοῦτον this τόν - λόγον, word, μᾶλλον [the] more ἐφοβήθη, he was afraid. καί And εἰσῆλθεν he went εἰς into τό the πραιτώριον Praetorium πάλιν again, καί and λέγει he says τῷ - Ἰησοῦ· to Jesus, Πόθεν From where εἶ are σύ; You? ὁ - δέ But Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀπόκρισιν an answer οὐ not ἔδωκεν did give αὐτῷ. him. Λέγει Says οὖν therefore αὐτῷ to Him ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Ἐμοί To me οὐ not λαλεῖς; speak You? οὐ Not οἶδας know You ὅτι that ἐξουσίαν authority ἔχω I have ἀπολῦσαι to release σε You, καί and ἐξουσίαν authority ἔχω I have σταυρῶσαι to crucify σε; You? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered αὐτῷ him Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, οὐκ Not εἶχες you would have ἐξουσίαν authority κατ ̓ also ἐμοῦ Me οὐδεμίαν against, εἰ if μή not ἦν it were δεδομένον given σοι to you ἄνωθεν· from above. διά Because of τοῦτο this, ὁ the [one] παραδούς having delivered up μέ Me σοι to you, μείζονα greater ἁμαρτίαν sin ἔχει. has. ἐκ Out of τούτου this ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate ἐζήτει was seeking ἀπολῦσαι to release αὐτόν· Him; οἱ - δέ but Ἰουδαῖοι the Jews ἐκραύγασαν cried out, λέγοντες· saying, Ἐάν If τοῦτον this [man] ἀπολύσῃς, you release, οὐ not εἶ you are φίλος a friend τοῦ - Καίσαρος· of Caesar. πᾶς Everyone ὁ - βασιλέα a king ἑαυτόν himself ποιῶν making, ἀντιλέγει speaks against τῷ - Καίσαρι. Caesar. ὁ - οὖν Therefore Πιλᾶτος Pilate, ἀκούσας having heard τῶν the λόγων words τούτων these, ἤγαγεν brought ἔξω out τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus, καί and ἐκάθισεν sat down ἐπί upon βήματος [the] judgment seat εἰς at τόπον a place λεγόμενον called Λιθόστρωτον, [the] Stone Pavement; Ἑβραϊστί in Hebrew δέ now, Γαββαθα. Gabbatha. ἦν It was δέ now Παρασκευή the Day of Preparation τοῦ of the πάσχα, Passover; ὥρα [the] hour ἦν was ὡς about ἕκτη. the sixth. καί And λέγει he says τοῖς to the Ἰουδαίοις· Jews, Ἴδε Behold ὁ the Βασιλεύς king ὑμῶν. of you! Ἐκραύγασαν They cried out οὖν therefore, Ἐκεῖνοι· With Him Ἆρον away, ἆρον, away! σταύρωσον Crucify αὐτόν. Him! Λέγει Says αὐτοῖς to them ὁ - Πιλᾶτος· Pilate, Τόν The Βασιλέα King ὑμῶν of you σταυρώσω; shall I crucify? Ἀπεκρίθησαν Answered οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς· chief priests, οὐκ Not ἔχομεν we have βασιλέα a king, εἰ if μή not Καίσαρα. Caesar. Τότε Then οὖν therefore παρέδωκεν he delivered αὐτόν Him αὐτοῖς to them, ἵνα that σταυρωθῇ. He might be crucified.

Παρέλαβον They took οὖν therefore τόν - Ἰησοῦν, Jesus. Καί And βαστάζων bearing ἑαυτῷ [His] own τόν - σταυρόν cross, ἐξῆλθεν He went out εἰς to τόν the λεγόμενον called Κρανίου of the Skull τόπον, Place, ὅ which λέγεται is called Ἑβραϊστί in Hebrew Γολγοθᾶ, Golgotha, ὅπου where αὐτόν Him ἐσταύρωσαν, they crucified, καί and μετ ̓ with αὐτοῦ Him ἄλλους others δύο two, ἐντεῦθεν on this side καί and ἐντεῦθεν, on that side, μέσον in between δέ now τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Ἔγραψεν Wrote δέ then καί also τίτλον a title ὁ - Πιλᾶτος Pilate καί and ἔθηκεν put [it] ἐπί on τοῦ the σταυροῦ· cross. ἦν It was δέ now γεγραμμένον· written: ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Jesus Ο of ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ Nazareth, Ο the ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ King ΤΩΝ of the ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ.
