ὁ - οὖν Therefore Ἰησοῦς Jesus, πρό before ἕξ six ἡμερῶν days τοῦ the πάσχα Passover, ἦλθεν came εἰς to Βηθανίαν, Bethany, ὅπου where ἦν was Λάζαρος, Lazarus, ὅν whom ἤγειρεν had raised ἐκ out from νεκρῶν [the] dead Ἰησοῦς. Jesus. ἐποίησαν They made οὖν therefore αὐτῷ Him δεῖπνον a supper ἐκεῖ, there, καί and ἡ - Μάρθα Martha διηκόνει, was serving, ὁ - δέ and Λάζαρος Lazarus εἷς one ἦν was ἐκ of τῶν those ἀνακειμένων reclining σύν with αὐτῷ. Him.
ἡ - οὖν Therefore Μαριάμ Mary, λαβοῦσα having taken λίτραν a litra μύρου of fragrant oil νάρδου of nard πιστικῆς pure πολυτίμου of great price, ἤλειψεν anointed τούς the πόδας feet τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus καί and ἐξέμαξεν wiped ταῖς with the θριξίν hair αὐτῆς of her τούς the πόδας feet αὐτοῦ· of Him; ἡ the δέ now οἰκία house ἐπληρώθη was filled ἐκ with τῆς the ὀσμῆς fragrance τοῦ of the μύρου. oil. Λέγει Says δέ however Ἰούδας Judas ὁ - Ἰσκαριώτης Iscariot, εἷς one ἐκ of τῶν the μαθητῶν disciples αὐτοῦ, of Him, ὁ - μέλλων being about αὐτόν Him παραδιδόναι· to betray, Διά Because of τί why τοῦτο this τό - μύρον fragrant oil οὐ not ἐπράθη was sold τριακοσίων for three hundred δηναρίων denarii καί and ἐδόθη given πτωχοῖς; to [the] poor? εἶπεν He said δέ however τοῦτο this, οὐ not ὅτι because περί for τῶν the πτωχῶν poor ἔμελεν he was caring αὐτῷ, to him, ἀλλ ̓ but ὅτι because κλέπτης a thief ἦν he was, καί and τό the γλωσσόκομον money bag ἔχων having, τά that βαλλόμενα being put into [it] ἐβάσταζεν. he used to pilfer. Εἶπεν Said οὖν therefore ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Ἄφες Leave alone αὐτήν, her, ἵνα so that εἰς for τήν the ἡμέραν day τοῦ of the ἐνταφιασμοῦ burial μου of Me τηρήσῃ she may keep αὐτό· it; τούς the πτωχούς poor γάρ for πάντοτε always ἔχετε you have μεθ ̓ with ἑαυτῶν, you; ἐμέ Me δέ however οὐ not πάντοτε always ἔχετε. you have.
Ἔγνω Knew οὖν therefore ὁ - ὄχλος a crowd πολύς great ἐκ of τῶν the Ἰουδαίων Jews ὅτι that ἐκεῖ there ἐστίν He is; καί and ἦλθον they came, οὐ not διά because of τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus μόνον, only, ἀλλ ̓ but ἵνα that καί also τόν - Λάζαρον Lazarus ἴδωσιν they might see, ὅν whom ἤγειρεν He had raised ἐκ out from νεκρῶν. [the] dead. ἐβουλεύσαντο Took counsel δέ however οἱ the ἀρχιερεῖς chief priests ἵνα that καί also τόν - Λάζαρον Lazarus ἀποκτείνωσιν, they might kill, ὅτι because πολλοί many δι ̓ on account of αὐτόν him ὑπῆγον were going away τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews καί and ἐπίστευον were believing εἰς in τόν - Ἰησοῦν. Jesus.
Τῇ On the ἐπαύριον next day ὁ the ὄχλος crowd πολύς great ὁ - ἐλθών having come εἰς to τήν the ἑορτήν, feast, ἀκούσαντες having heard ὅτι that ἔρχεται is coming ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus εἰς into Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem, ἔλαβον took τά the βαΐα branches τῶν of the φοινίκων palm trees καί and ἐξῆλθον went out εἰς to ὑπάντησιν meet αὐτῷ Him, καί and ἐκραύγαζον· were shouting: Ὡσαννά· Hosanna!” Εὐλογημένος Blessed is ὁ the [One] ἐρχόμενος coming ἐν in ὀνόματι [the] name Κυρίου, of [the] Lord!” Καί And ὁ the Βασιλεύς King τοῦ - Ἰσραήλ. of Israel!” Εὑρών Having found δέ then ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ὀνάριον a young donkey, ἐκάθισεν He sat ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτό, it, καθώς as ἐστίν it is γεγραμμένον· written: Μή Not φοβοῦ, fear, θυγάτηρ daughter Σιών· of Zion. ἰδού Behold, ὁ the Βασιλεύς King σου of you ἔρχεται, comes, καθήμενος sitting ἐπί on πῶλον a colt ὄνου. of a donkey.”
Ταῦτα These things οὐ not ἔγνωσαν knew αὐτοῦ of Him οἱ the μαθηταί disciples τό from the πρῶτον, first, ἀλλ ̓ but ὅτε when ἐδοξάσθη was glorified Ἰησοῦς Jesus, τότε then ἐμνήσθησαν they remembered ὅτι that ταῦτα these things ἦν were ἐπ ̓ of αὐτῷ Him γεγραμμένα written, καί and ταῦτα these things ἐποίησαν they had done αὐτῷ. to Him. Ἐμαρτύρει Continued to bear witness οὖν therefore ὁ the ὄχλος crowd ὁ - ὤν being μετ ̓ with αὐτοῦ Him ὅτε when τόν - Λάζαρον Lazarus ἐφώνησεν He called ἐκ out of τοῦ the μνημείου tomb καί and ἤγειρεν raised αὐτόν him ἐκ out from νεκρῶν. [the] dead. διά On account of τοῦτο this καί also ὑπήντησεν met αὐτῷ Him ὁ the ὄχλος, crowd, ὅτι because ἤκουσαν they heard τοῦτο this αὐτόν of His πεποιηκέναι having done τό the σημεῖον. sign. οἱ - οὖν Therefore Φαρισαῖοι the Pharisees εἶπαν said πρός among ἑαυτούς· themselves, Θεωρεῖτε You see ὅτι that οὐ not ὠφελεῖτε you gain οὐδέν· nothing. ἴδε Behold, ὁ the κόσμος world ὀπίσω after αὐτοῦ Him ἀπῆλθεν. has gone.
Ἦσαν There were δέ now Ἕλληνες Greeks τινές certain ἐκ among τῶν those ἀναβαινόντων coming up ἵνα that προσκυνήσωσιν they might worship ἐν at τῇ the ἑορτῇ· feast; οὗτοι these οὖν therefore προσῆλθον came Φιλίππῳ to Philip, τῷ who was ἀπό from Βηθσαϊδά Bethsaida τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee, καί and ἠρώτων they were asking αὐτόν him λέγοντες· saying, Κύριε, Sir, θέλομεν we desire τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus ἰδεῖν. to see. ἔρχεται Comes ὁ - Φίλιππος Philip καί and λέγει tells τῷ - Ἀνδρέᾳ, Andrew; ἔρχεται come Ἀνδρέας Andrew καί and Φίλιππος Philip καί and λέγουσιν tell τῷ - Ἰησοῦ. Jesus. ὁ - δέ And Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἀποκρίνεται answered αὐτοῖς them λέγων· saying, Ἐλήλυθεν Has come ἡ the ὥρα hour ἵνα that δοξασθῇ should be glorified ὁ the Υἱός Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου. of Man. ἀμήν Truly, ἀμήν truly, λέγω I say ὑμῖν, to you, ἐάν if μή not ὁ the κόκκος grain τοῦ - σίτου of wheat, πεσών having fallen εἰς into τήν the γῆν ground, ἀποθάνῃ, should die, αὐτός it μόνος alone μένει· abides; ἐάν if δέ however ἀποθάνῃ, it should die, πολύν much καρπόν fruit φέρει. it bears. ὁ The [one] φιλῶν loving τήν the ψυχήν life αὐτοῦ of him, ἀπολλύει loses αὐτήν, it, καί and ὁ the [one] μισῶν hating τήν the ψυχήν life αὐτοῦ of him ἐν in τῷ the κόσμῳ world τούτῳ this, εἰς to ζωήν life αἰώνιον eternal φυλάξει will keep αὐτήν. it. ἐάν If ἐμοί Me τὶς anyone διακονῇ, serves, ἐμοί Me ἀκολουθείτω, let him follow; καί and ὅπου where εἰμί am ἐγώ I, ἐκεῖ there καί also ὁ the διάκονος servant ὁ - ἐμός of Me ἔσται· will be. ἐάν If τὶς anyone ἐμοί Me διακονῇ serves, τιμήσει will honor αὐτόν him ὁ the Πατήρ. Father. Νῦν Now ἡ the ψυχή soul μου of Me τετάρακται, has been troubled, καί and τί what εἴπω; shall I say? Πάτερ, Father, σῶσον save με Me ἐκ from τῆς the ὥρας hour ταύτης; this.’ ἀλλά But διά on account of τοῦτο this ἦλθον I came εἰς to τήν the ὥραν hour ταύτην. this. Πάτερ, Father, δόξασον glorify σου of You τό the ὄνομα. name. Ἦλθεν Came οὖν therefore φωνή a voice ἐκ from τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ· heaven: Καί Both ἐδόξασα I have glorified [it], καί and πάλιν again δοξάσω. I will glorify [it]. ὁ - οὖν Therefore ὄχλος the crowd ὁ - ἑστώς having stood καί and ἀκούσας having heard ἔλεγεν was saying, Βροντήν Thunder γεγονέναι, there has been. ἄλλοι Others ἔλεγον· were saying, Ἄγγελος An angel αὐτῷ to Him λελάληκεν. has spoken. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and εἶπεν· said οὐ Not δι ̓ because of ἐμέ Me ἡ the φωνή voice αὕτη this γέγονεν has come, ἀλλά but δι ̓ because of ὑμᾶς. you. νῦν Now κρίσις [the] judgment ἐστίν is τοῦ the κόσμου world τούτου, of this; νῦν now ὁ the ἄρχων prince τοῦ of the κόσμου world τούτου this ἐκβληθήσεται will be cast ἔξω· out. κἀγώ And I, ἐάν if ὑψωθῶ I am lifted up ἐκ from τῆς the γῆς, earth, πάντας all ἑλκύσω will draw πρός to ἐμαυτόν. Myself. τοῦτο This δέ now ἔλεγεν He was saying, σημαίνων signifying ποίῳ by what θανάτῳ death ἤμελλεν He was about ἀποθνήσκειν. to die.
Ἀπεκρίθη Answered οὖν then αὐτῷ Him ὁ the ὄχλος· crowd, Ἡμεῖς We ἠκούσαμεν have heard ἐκ from τοῦ the νόμου law ὅτι that ὁ the Χριστός Christ μένει abides εἰς to τόν the αἰῶνα, age, καί and πῶς how λέγεις say σύ you ὅτι that δεῖ it behooves ὑψωθῆναι to be lifted up τόν the Υἱόν Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου; of Man? τίς Who ἐστίν is οὗτος this ὁ - Υἱός Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου; of Man? Εἶπεν Said οὖν therefore αὐτοῖς to them ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Ἔτι Yet μικρόν a little χρόνον while τό the φῶς light ἐν with ὑμῖν you ἐστίν. is. περιπατεῖτε Walk ὡς while τό the φῶς light ἔχετε, you have, ἵνα so that μή not σκοτία darkness ὑμᾶς you καταλάβῃ· might overtake. καί And ὁ the [one] περιπατῶν walking ἐν in τῇ the σκοτίᾳ darkness οὐ not οἶδεν knows ποῦ where ὑπάγει. he is going. ὡς While τό the φῶς light ἔχετε, you have, πιστεύετε believe εἰς in τό the φῶς, light, ἵνα so that υἱοί sons φωτός of light γένησθε. you may become. Ταῦτα These things ἐλάλησεν spoke Ἰησοῦς, Jesus, καί and ἀπελθών having gone away, ἐκρύβη He was hidden ἀπ ̓ from αὐτῶν. them.
Τοσαῦτα So many δέ however αὐτοῦ of Him σημεῖα signs πεποιηκότος having been done ἔμπροσθεν before αὐτῶν them, οὐ not ἐπίστευον they believed εἰς in αὐτόν, Him, ἵνα so that ὁ the λόγος word Ἠσαΐου of Isaiah τοῦ the προφήτου prophet πληρωθῇ might be fulfilled ὅν that εἶπεν· said: Κύριε, Lord, τίς who ἐπίστευσεν has believed τῇ the ἀκοῇ report ἡμῶν; of us? καί And ὁ the βραχίων arm Κυρίου of [the] Lord τίνι to whom ἀπεκαλύφθη; has been revealed?”
Διά Because of τοῦτο this, οὐ not ἠδύναντο they were able πιστεύειν, to believe, ὅτι for πάλιν again εἶπεν said Ἠσαΐας· Isaiah: Τετύφλωκεν He has blinded αὐτῶν of them τούς the ὀφθαλμούς eyes, καί and ἐπώρωσεν has hardened αὐτῶν of them τήν the καρδίαν, heart, ἵνα that μή not ἴδωσιν they should see τοῖς with the ὀφθαλμοῖς eyes, καί and νοήσωσιν understand τῇ with the καρδίᾳ heart, καί and στραφῶσιν, turn, καί and ἰάσομαι I will heal αὐτούς. them.”
Ταῦτα These things εἶπεν said Ἠσαΐας Isaiah ὅτι because εἶδεν he saw τήν the δόξαν glory αὐτοῦ, of Him καί and ἐλάλησεν spoke περί concerning αὐτοῦ. Him. ὅμως Nevertheless, μέντοι indeed καί even ἐκ of τῶν the ἀρχόντων rulers πολλοί many ἐπίστευσαν believed εἰς in αὐτόν, Him; ἀλλά but διά on account of τούς the Φαρισαίους Pharisees οὐ not ὡμολόγουν they were confessing, ἵνα so that μή not ἀποσυνάγωγοι put out of the synagogue γένωνται· they might be; ἠγάπησαν they loved γάρ for τήν the δόξαν glory τῶν - ἀνθρώπων of men μᾶλλον more ἤπερ than τήν the δόξαν glory τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God.
Ἰησοῦς Jesus δέ then ἔκραξεν cried out καί and εἶπεν· said, ὁ The [one] πιστεύων believing εἰς in ἐμέ Me, οὐ not πιστεύει believes εἰς in ἐμέ Me, ἀλλά but εἰς in τόν the [One] πέμψαντα having sent με, Me; καί and ὁ the [one] θεωρῶν beholding ἐμέ Me, θεωρεῖ beholds τόν the [One] πέμψαντα having sent με. Me. ἐγώ I φῶς a light εἰς into τόν the κόσμον world ἐλήλυθα, have come, ἵνα so that πᾶς everyone ὁ - πιστεύων believing εἰς in ἐμέ Me, ἐν in τῇ the σκοτίᾳ darkness μή not μείνῃ. should abide. Καί And ἐάν if τίς anyone μου of Me ἀκούσῃ hears τῶν the ῥημάτων words καί and μή not φυλάξῃ, keeps [them], ἐγώ I οὐ not κρίνω do judge αὐτόν· him, οὐ not γάρ for ἦλθον I came ἵνα that κρίνω I might judge τόν the κόσμον, world, ἀλλ ̓ but ἵνα that σώσω I might save τόν the κόσμον. world. ὁ The [one] ἀθετῶν rejecting ἐμέ Me καί and μή not λαμβάνων receiving τά the ῥήματα words μου of Me ἔχει has τόν [one] κρίνοντα judging αὐτόν· him: ὁ The λόγος word ὅν which ἐλάλησα I spoke, ἐκεῖνος that κρινεῖ will judge αὐτόν him ἐν in τῇ the ἐσχάτῃ last ἡμέρᾳ. day. Ὅτι For ἐγώ I ἐκ from ἐμαυτοῦ Myself οὐ not ἐλάλησα, spoke, ἀλλ ̓ but ὁ the πέμψας having sent με Me Πατήρ Father αὐτός Himself, μοι Me ἐντολήν a commandment δέδωκεν gave τί what εἴπω I should say καί and τί what λαλήσω. I should speak. καί And οἶδα I know ὅτι that ἡ the ἐντολή commandment αὐτοῦ of Him ζωή life αἰώνιος eternal ἐστίν. is. ἅ What οὖν therefore ἐγώ I λαλῶ, speak, καθώς as εἴρηκεν has said μοι to Me ὁ the Πατήρ, Father, οὕτως so λαλῶ. I speak.
Πρό Before δέ now τῆς the ἑορτῆς feast τοῦ of the πάσχα Passover, εἰδώς knowing ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ὅτι that ἦλθεν had come αὐτοῦ His ἡ - ὥρα hour, ἵνα that μεταβῇ He would depart ἐκ out of τοῦ the κόσμου world τούτου this πρός to τόν the Πατέρα, Father, ἀγαπήσας having loved τούς the ἰδίους own τούς who [were] ἐν in τῷ the κόσμῳ world, εἰς to τέλος [the] end ἠγάπησεν He loved αὐτούς. them. καί And δείπνου supper γινομένου, taking place, τοῦ the διαβόλου devil ἤδη already βεβληκότος having put εἰς into τήν the καρδίαν heart ἵνα that παραδοῖ he should betray αὐτόν Him Ἰούδας of Judas, Σίμωνος [son] of Simon Ἰσκαριώτου, Iscariot, εἰδώς knowing ὅτι that πάντα all things ἔδωκεν has given αὐτῷ Him ὁ the Πατήρ Father εἰς into τάς the χεῖρας hands, καί and ὅτι that ἀπό from Θεοῦ God ἐξῆλθεν He came forth καί and πρός to τόν - Θεόν God ὑπάγει, He is going, ἐγείρεται He rises ἐκ from τοῦ the δείπνου supper καί and τίθησιν lays aside τά the ἱμάτια garments. καί And λαβών having taken λέντιον a towel, διέζωσεν He girded ἑαυτόν· Himself. εἶτα After that, βάλλει He pours ὕδωρ water εἰς into τόν the νιπτῆρα basin, καί and ἤρξατο He began νίπτειν to wash τούς the πόδας feet τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples, καί and ἐκμάσσειν to wipe [them] τῷ with the λεντίῳ towel ᾧ with which ἦν He was διεζωσμένος. girded. Ἔρχεται He comes οὖν then πρός to Σίμωνα Simon Πέτρον· Peter, λέγει who says αὐτῷ· to Him, Κύριε, Lord, σύ You μου of me νίπτεις do wash τούς the πόδας; feet?
