Καί And τῇ on the ἡμέρᾳ day τῇ - τρίτῃ third γάμος a wedding ἐγένετο took place ἐν in Κανά Cana τῆς - Γαλιλαίας, of Galilee, καί and ἦν was ἡ the μήτηρ mother τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus ἐκεῖ· there. ἐκλήθη Was invited δέ then καί also ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him εἰς to τόν the γάμον. wedding. καί And ὑστερήσαντος having been deficient οἴνου of wine, λέγει says ἡ the μήτηρ mother τοῦ - Ἰησοῦ of Jesus πρός to αὐτόν· Him, Οἶνον Wine οὐ not ἔχουσιν. they have. Καί And λέγει says αὐτῇ to her ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Τί What ἐμοί to Me καί and σοί, to you, γύναι; woman? οὔπω Not yet ἥκει is come ἡ the ὥρα hour μου. of Me. Λέγει Says ἡ the μήτηρ mother αὐτοῦ of Him τοῖς to the διακόνοις· servants, Ὅ Whatever τὶ anyhow ἄν - λέγῃ He may say ὑμῖν to you, ποιήσατε. do. Ἦσαν There were δέ now ἐκεῖ there λίθιναι of stone, ὑδρίαι water jars ἕξ six, κατά according to τόν the καθαρισμόν purification τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων Jews, κείμεναι, standing, χωροῦσαι having space ἀνά for μετρητάς metretae δύο two ἤ or τρεῖς. three. λέγει Says αὐτοῖς to them ὁ - Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Γεμίσατε Fill τάς the ὑδρίας jars ὕδατος. with water. Καί And ἐγέμισαν they filled αὐτάς them ἕως up to ἄνω. [the] brim. Καί And λέγει He says αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἀντλήσατε Draw out νῦν now καί and φέρετε carry τῷ to the ἀρχιτρικλίνῳ· master of the feast. οἱ - δέ And ἤνεγκαν. they carried [it]. ὡς When δέ then ἐγεύσατο had tasted ὁ the ἀρχιτρίκλινος master of the feast τό the ὕδωρ water οἶνον wine γεγενημένον having become, καί and οὐ not ᾔδει he knew πόθεν from where ἐστίν, it is — οἱ the δέ however διάκονοι servants ᾔδεισαν knew οἱ - ἠντληκότες having drawn τό the ὕδωρ, water — φωνεῖ calls τόν the νυμφίον bridegroom ὁ the ἀρχιτρίκλινος master of the feast καί and λέγει says αὐτῷ· to him, Πᾶς Every ἄνθρωπος man πρῶτον first τόν the καλόν good οἶνον wine τίθησιν sets out, καί and ὅταν when μεθυσθῶσιν they might have drunk freely, τόν the ἐλάσσω· inferior; σύ you τετήρηκας have kept τόν the καλόν good οἶνον wine ἕως until ἄρτι. now. Ταύτην This ἐποίησεν did, ἀρχήν [the] beginning τῶν of the σημείων signs, ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus ἐν in Κανά Cana τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee, καί and ἐφανέρωσεν He revealed τήν the δόξαν glory αὐτοῦ, of Him, καί and ἐπίστευσαν believed εἰς in αὐτόν Him οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ. of Him.
Μετά After τοῦτο this κατέβη He went down εἰς to Καφαρναούμ Capernaum, αὐτός He καί and ἡ the μήτηρ mother αὐτοῦ of Him καί and οἱ the ἀδελφοί brothers αὐτοῦ of Him καί and οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him, καί and ἐκεῖ there ἔμειναν they stayed οὐ not πολλάς many ἡμέρας. days.
Καί And ἐγγύς near ἦν was τό the πάσχα Passover τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων, Jews, καί and ἀνέβη went up εἰς to Ἱεροσόλυμα Jerusalem ὁ - Ἰησοῦς. Jesus.
καί And εὗρεν He found ἐν in τῷ the ἱερῷ temple τούς those πωλοῦντας selling βόας oxen καί and πρόβατα sheep καί and περιστεράς doves, καί and τούς the κερματιστάς money changers καθημένους, sitting. καί And ποιήσας having made φραγέλλιον a whip ἐκ of σχοινίων cords, πάντας all ἐξέβαλεν He drove out ἐκ from τοῦ the ἱεροῦ temple, τά - τέ both πρόβατα sheep καί and τούς - βόας, oxen; καί and τῶν of the κολλυβιστῶν money changers ἐξέχεεν He poured out τά the κέρματα coins, καί and τάς the τραπέζας tables ἀνέτρεψεν, He overthrew. καί And τοῖς to those τάς - περιστεράς doves πωλοῦσιν selling εἶπεν· He said, Ἄρατε Take ταῦτα these things ἐντεῦθεν, from here; μή not ποιεῖτε make τόν the οἶκον house τοῦ of the Πατρός Father μου of Me οἶκον a house ἐμπορίου. of trade. Ἐμνήσθησαν Remembered οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ὅτι that γεγραμμένον written ἐστίν· it is: ὁ The ζῆλος zeal τοῦ of the οἴκου house σου of You καταφάγεται will consume με. Me.”
Ἀπεκρίθησαν Answered οὖν therefore οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι Jews καί and εἶπαν said αὐτῷ· to Him, Τί What σημεῖον sign δεικνύεις show You ἡμῖν to us, ὅτι that ταῦτα these things ποιεῖς; You do? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and εἶπεν said αὐτοῖς· to them, Λύσατε Destroy τόν the ναόν temple τοῦτον this, καί and ἐν in τρισίν three ἡμέραις days ἐγερῶ I will raise up αὐτόν. it. Εἶπαν Said οὖν therefore οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι· Jews, Τεσσεράκοντα Forty καί and ἕξ six ἔτεσιν years οἰκοδομήθη was built ὁ the ναός temple οὗτος, this, καί and σύ You ἐν in τρισίν three ἡμέραις days ἐγερεῖς will raise up αὐτόν; it? Ἐκεῖνος He δέ however ἔλεγεν was speaking περί concerning τοῦ the ναοῦ temple τοῦ of the σώματος body αὐτοῦ. of Him. ὅτε When οὖν therefore ἠγέρθη He was raised up ἐκ out from νεκρῶν, [the] dead, ἐμνήσθησαν remembered οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ὅτι that τοῦτο this ἔλεγεν, He had said, καί and ἐπίστευσαν they believed τῇ the γραφῇ Scripture καί and τῷ the λόγῳ word ὅν that εἶπεν had spoken ὁ - Ἰησοῦς. Jesus.
ὡς When δέ then ἦν He was ἐν in τοῖς - Ἱεροσολύμοις Jerusalem ἐν in τῷ the πάσχα Passover, ἐν in τῇ the ἑορτῇ, Feast, πολλοί many ἐπίστευσαν believed εἰς in τό the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ of Him, θεωροῦντες beholding αὐτοῦ of Him τά the σημεῖα signs ἅ that ἐποίει· He was doing. αὐτός On His part δέ however Ἰησοῦς Jesus οὐ not ἐπίστευεν did entrust αὑτόν Himself αὐτοῖς to them, διά because of τό - αὐτόν His γινώσκειν knowing πάντας all [men], καί and ὅτι because οὐ no χρείαν need εἶχεν He had ἵνα that τὶς anyone μαρτυρήσῃ should testify περί concerning τοῦ the ἀνθρώπου· man; αὐτός He Himself γάρ for ἐγίνωσκεν knew τί what ἦν was ἐν in τῷ the ἀνθρώπῳ. man.
Ἦν There was δέ now ἄνθρωπος a man ἐκ of τῶν the Φαρισαίων, Pharisees, Νικόδημος Nicodemus ὄνομα name αὐτῷ, to him, ἄρχων a ruler τῶν of the Ἰουδαίων· Jews; οὗτος He ἦλθεν came πρός to αὐτόν Him νυκτός by night καί and εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to Him, Ῥαββί, Rabbi, οἴδαμεν we know ὅτι that ἀπό from Θεοῦ God ἐλήλυθας You have come, διδάσκαλος· a teacher; οὐδείς no one γάρ for δύναται is able ταῦτα these τά - σημεῖα signs ποιεῖν to do ἅ that σύ You ποιεῖς, do, ἐάν if μή not ᾖ should be ὁ - Θεός God μετ ̓ with αὐτοῦ. him. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to him, Ἀμήν Truly, ἀμήν truly λέγω I say σοι, to you, ἐάν if μή not τὶς anyone γεννηθῇ be born ἄνωθεν, from above, οὐ not δύναται he is able ἰδεῖν to see τήν the βασιλείαν kingdom τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God.” Λέγει Says πρός to αὐτόν Him ὁ - Νικόδημος· Nicodemus, Πῶς How δύναται is able ἄνθρωπος a man γεννηθῆναι to be born, γέρων old ὤν; being? μή Not δύναται is he able εἰς into τήν the κοιλίαν womb τῆς of the μητρός mother αὐτοῦ of him δεύτερον a second time εἰσελθεῖν to enter, καί and γεννηθῆναι; to be born? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰησοῦς· Jesus, Ἀμήν Truly, ἀμήν truly, λέγω I say σοι, to you, ἐάν if μή not τὶς anyone γεννηθῇ be born ἐκ of ὕδατος water καί and Πνεύματος, of [the] Spirit, οὐ not δύναται he is able εἰσελθεῖν to enter εἰς into τήν the βασιλείαν kingdom τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God. τό That γεγεννημένον having been born ἐκ of τῆς the σαρκός flesh, σάρξ flesh ἐστίν, is; καί and τό that γεγεννημένον having been born ἐκ of τοῦ the Πνεύματος Spirit, πνεῦμα spirit ἐστίν. is. μή Not θαυμάσῃς do wonder ὅτι that εἶπον I said σοι· to you, Δεῖ It is necessary for ὑμᾶς you [all] γεννηθῆναι to be born ἄνωθεν. from above. τό The πνεῦμα wind ὅπου where θέλει it wishes πνεῖ blows, καί and τήν the φωνήν sound αὐτοῦ of it ἀκούεις, You hear, ἀλλ ̓ but οὐ not οἶδας you know πόθεν from where ἔρχεται it comes, καί and ποῦ where ὑπάγει· it goes; οὕτως thus ἐστίν is πᾶς everyone ὁ - γεγεννημένος having been born ἐκ of τοῦ the Πνεύματος. Spirit. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Νικόδημος Nicodemus καί and εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to Him, Πῶς How δύναται are able ταῦτα these things γενέσθαι; to be? Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and εἶπεν said αὐτῷ· to him, Σύ You εἶ are ὁ the διδάσκαλος teacher τοῦ - Ἰσραήλ of Israel, καί and ταῦτα these things οὐ not γινώσκεις; know? ἀμήν Truly, ἀμήν truly, λέγω I say σοι to you ὅτι that ὅ what οἴδαμεν we know λαλοῦμεν we speak, καί and ὅ what ἑωράκαμεν we have seen μαρτυροῦμεν, we bear witness to; καί and τήν the μαρτυρίαν witness ἡμῶν of us οὐ not λαμβάνετε. you people receive. εἰ If τά things ἐπίγεια earthly εἶπον I have told ὑμῖν you, καί and οὐ not πιστεύετε, you believe, πῶς how ἐάν if εἴπω I tell ὑμῖν to you τά the things ἐπουράνια heavenly, πιστεύσετε; will you believe? καί And οὐδείς no one ἀναβέβηκεν has gone up εἰς into τόν - οὐρανόν heaven εἰ if μή not ὁ the [One] ἐκ out of τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ heaven καταβάς, having come down, ὁ the Υἱός Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου. of Man. καί And καθώς as Μωϋσῆς Moses ὕψωσεν lifted up τόν the ὄφιν serpent ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ, wilderness, οὕτως thus ὑψωθῆναι to be lifted up δεῖ it behooves τόν the Υἱόν Son τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου, of Man, ἵνα so that πᾶς everyone ὁ - πιστεύων believing ἐν in αὐτῷ Him ἔχῃ may have ζωήν life αἰώνιον. eternal. Οὕτως Thus γάρ for ἠγάπησεν loved ὁ - Θεός God τόν the κόσμον, world, ὥστε that τόν the Υἱόν Son, τόν the μονογενῆ only begotten, ἔδωκεν, He gave, ἵνα so that πᾶς everyone ὁ - πιστεύων believing εἰς in αὐτόν Him μή not ἀπόληται should perish, ἀλλ ̓ but ἔχῃ should have ζωήν life αἰώνιον. eternal. οὐ Not γάρ for ἀπέστειλεν sent ὁ - Θεός God τόν - Υἱόν His Son εἰς into τόν the κόσμον world ἵνα that κρίνῃ He might judge τόν the κόσμον, world, ἀλλ ̓ but ἵνα that σωθῇ might be saved ὁ the κόσμος world δι ̓ through αὐτοῦ. Him. ὁ The [one] πιστεύων believing εἰς on αὐτόν Him οὐ not κρίνεται· is judged; ὁ the [one] δέ but μή not πιστεύων believing ἤδη already κέκριται, has been judged, ὅτι because μή not πεπίστευκεν he has believed εἰς in τό the ὄνομα name τοῦ of the μονογενοῦς only begotten Υἱοῦ Son τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God. Αὕτη This δέ now ἐστίν is ἡ the κρίσις judgement, ὅτι that τό the φῶς Light ἐλήλυθεν has come εἰς into τόν the κόσμον world, καί and ἠγάπησαν loved οἱ - ἄνθρωποι men μᾶλλον rather τό the σκότος darkness ἤ than τό the φῶς· Light; ἦν were γάρ for αὐτῶν of them πονηρά evil τά the ἔργα. deeds. πᾶς Everyone γάρ for ὁ - φαῦλα evil πράσσων practicing μισεῖ hates τό the φῶς Light καί and οὐ not ἔρχεται comes πρός to τό the φῶς, Light, ἵνα so that μή not ἐλεγχθῇ may be exposed τά the ἔργα works αὐτοῦ· of him; ὁ the [one] δέ however ποιῶν practicing τήν the ἀλήθειαν truth ἔρχεται comes πρός to τό the φῶς, Light, ἵνα that φανερωθῇ may be manifest αὐτοῦ his τά - ἔργα works ὅτι that ἐν in Θεῷ God ἐστίν have been εἰργασμένα. done.”
Μετά After ταῦτα these things ἦλθεν came ὁ - Ἰησοῦς Jesus καί and οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him εἰς into τήν the Ἰουδαίαν Judean γῆν land, καί and ἐκεῖ there διέτριβεν He was staying μετ ̓ with αὐτῶν them, καί and ἐβάπτιζεν. was baptizing.
Ἦν Was δέ now καί also ὁ - Ἰωάννης John βαπτίζων baptizing ἐν in Αἰνών Aenon, ἐγγύς near τοῦ - Σαλείμ, Salim, ὅτι because ὕδατα waters πολλά many ἦν were ἐκεῖ, there, καί and παρεγίνοντο they were coming καί and ἐβαπτίζοντο· being baptized. οὔπω Not yet γάρ for ἦν had been βεβλημένος cast εἰς into τήν the φυλακήν prison ὁ - Ἰωάννης. John.
Ἐγένετο Arose οὖν then ζήτησις a debate ἐκ among τῶν the μαθητῶν disciples Ἰωάννου of John, μετά with Ἰουδαίου [a certain] Jew, περί about καθαρισμοῦ. purification. καί And ἦλθον they came πρός to τόν - Ἰωάννην John καί and εἶπαν said αὐτῷ· to him, Ῥαββί, Rabbi, ὅς He who ἦν was μετά with σοῦ you πέραν beyond τοῦ the Ἰορδάνου, Jordan, ᾧ to whom σύ you μεμαρτύρηκας, have borne witness, ἴδε behold οὗτος He βαπτίζει baptizes, καί and πάντες all ἔρχονται are coming πρός to αὐτόν. Him. Ἀπεκρίθη Answered Ἰωάννης John καί and εἶπεν· said, οὐ Nothing δύναται is able ἄνθρωπος a man λαμβάνειν to receive, οὐδέ nothing ἕν one ἐάν if μή not ᾖ it is δεδομένον given αὐτῷ to him ἐκ from τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ. heaven. αὐτοί Yourselves ὑμεῖς you μοι to me μαρτυρεῖτε bear witness, ὅτι that εἶπον I said, ὅτι - οὐκ Not εἰμί am ἐγώ I ὁ the Χριστός, Christ, ἀλλ ̓ but ὅτι - Ἀπεσταλμένος sent εἰμί I am ἔμπροσθεν before ἐκείνου. Him. ὁ The [one] ἔχων having τήν the νύμφην bride, νυμφίος [the] bridegroom ἐστίν· is; ὁ the δέ now φίλος friend τοῦ of the νυμφίου bridegroom, ὁ the [one] ἑστηκώς standing καί and ἀκούων listening for αὐτοῦ him, χαρᾷ with joy χαίρει rejoices διά because of τήν the φωνήν voice τοῦ of the νυμφίου. bridegroom. αὕτη This οὖν therefore, ἡ the χαρά joy ἡ - ἐμή of mine, πεπλήρωται. is fulfilled. ἐκεῖνον Him δεῖ it behooves αὐξάνειν, to increase; ἐμέ me δέ however ἐλαττοῦσθαι. to decrease.
ὁ The [One] ἄνωθεν from above ἐρχόμενος coming, ἐπάνω above πάντων all ἐστίν· is. ὁ The [one] ὤν being ἐκ from τῆς the γῆς earth, ἐκ from τῆς the γῆς earth ἐστίν is, καί and ἐκ from τῆς the γῆς earth λαλεῖ. speaks. ὁ The [One] ἐκ from τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ heaven ἐρχόμενος coming, ἐπάνω above πάντων all ἐστίν· is. ὅ What ἑώρακεν He has seen καί and ἤκουσεν heard, τοῦτο this μαρτυρεῖ, He testifies; καί and τήν the μαρτυρίαν testimony αὐτοῦ of Him, οὐδείς no one λαμβάνει. receives.
