Καί And ἦν were ὁ the πατήρ father αὐτοῦ of Him, καί and ἡ the μήτηρ mother, θαυμάζοντες marveling ἐπί at τοῖς the things λαλουμένοις having been spoken περί concerning αὐτοῦ. Καί And ὡς when ἐτέλεσαν they had performed πάντα everything τά - κατά according to τόν the νόμον law Κυρίου, of [the] Lord, ἐπέστρεψαν they returned εἰς to τήν - Γαλιλαίαν Galilee, εἰς to the πόλιν town ἑαυτῶν of them, Ναζαρέθ. Nazareth. Τό - δέ And παιδίον the Child ηὔξανεν continued to grow καί and ἐκραταιοῦτο become strong, πληρούμενον being filled σοφίᾳ, with wisdom, καί and χάρις [the] grace Θεοῦ of God ἦν was ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτό. Him.

Καί And ἐπορεύοντο were going οἱ the γονεῖς parents αὐτοῦ of Him κατ ̓ every ἔτος year εἰς to Ἰερουσαλήμ Jerusalem τῇ at the ἑορτῇ feast τοῦ of the πάσχα. Passover. Καί And ὅτε when ἐγένετο He was ἐτῶν years [old] δώδεκα, twelve, ἀναβαινόντων having gone up αὐτῶν they κατά according to τό the ἔθος custom τῆς of the ἑορτῆς Feast, καί and τελειωσάντων having completed τάς the ἡμέρας, days, ἐν in τῷ the ὑποστρέφειν returning αὐτούς of them, ὑπέμεινεν remained behind Ἰησοῦς Jesus ὁ the παῖς boy ἐν in Ἰερουσαλήμ, Jerusalem. καί But οὐ not ἔγνωσαν knew οἱ the γονεῖς parents αὐτοῦ. of Him. νομίσαντες Having supposed δέ now αὐτόν Him εἶναι to be ἐν in τῇ their συνοδίᾳ company, ἦλθον they went ἡμέρας a day’s ὁδόν journey, καί and ἀνεζήτουν began seeking αὐτόν Him ἐν among τοῖς the συγγενεῦσιν relatives καί and τοῖς the γνωστοῖς, acquaintances; καί and μή not εὑρόντες having found [Him], ὑπέστρεψαν they returned εἰς to Ἰερουσαλήμ Jerusalem, ἀναζητοῦντες seeking αὐτόν. Him. Καί And ἐγένετο it came to pass μετά after ἡμέρας days τρεῖς three, εὗρον they found αὐτόν Him ἐν in τῷ the ἱερῷ temple, καθεζόμενον sitting ἐν in μέσῳ [the] midst τῶν of the διδασκάλων teachers, καί both ἀκούοντα hearing αὐτῶν them καί and ἐπερωτῶντα questioning αὐτούς· them. ἐξίσταντο Were amazed δέ then πάντες all οἱ those ἀκούοντες hearing αὐτοῦ Him ἐπί at τῇ the συνέσει understanding καί and ταῖς the ἀποκρίσεσιν answers αὐτοῦ. of Him. Καί And ἰδόντες having seen αὐτόν Him, ἐξεπλάγησαν, they were astonished, καί and εἶπεν said πρός to αὐτόν Him ἡ the μήτηρ mother αὐτοῦ· of Him, Τέκνον, Child τί why ἐποίησας have You done ἡμῖν to us οὕτως; thus? ἰδού Behold, ὁ the πατήρ father σου of You, κἀγώ and I, ὀδυνώμενοι distressing ἐζητοῦμεν were seeking σε. Καί And εἶπεν He said πρός to αὐτούς· them, Τί Why [is it] ὅτι that ἐζητεῖτε you were seeking με; Me? οὐ Not ᾔδειτε knew you ὅτι that ἐν in τοῖς the [house] τοῦ of the Πατρός Father μου of Me δεῖ it behooves εἶναι to be με; Me?” καί And αὐτοί they οὐ not συνῆκαν understood τό the ῥῆμα word ὅ that ἐλάλησεν He spoke αὐτοῖς. to them. Καί And Ἰησοῦς Jesus προέκοπτεν continued to advance ἐν in τῇ - σοφίᾳ wisdom καί and ἡλικίᾳ stature, καί and χάριτι in favor παρά with Θεῷ God καί and ἀνθρώποις. men.

ἐν In ἔτει year δέ then πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ fifteenth τῆς of the ἡγεμονίας reign Τιβερίου of Tiberius Καίσαρος, Caesar, ἡγεμονεύοντος being governor Ποντίου Pontius Πιλάτου Pilate τῆς - Ἰουδαίας, of Judea, καί and τετρααρχοῦντος being tetrarch τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee Ἡρῴδου, Herod, Φιλίππου Philip δέ now τοῦ the ἀδελφοῦ brother αὐτοῦ of him τετρααρχοῦντος being tetrarch τῆς - Ἰτουραίας of Ituraea καί and Τραχωνίτιδος of Trachonitis χώρας, [the] region, καί and Λυσανίου Lysanias τῆς - Ἀβιληνῆς of Abilene τετρααρχοῦντος, being tetrarch, ἐπί during ἀρχιερέως [the] high priesthood Ἅννα of Annas καί and Καϊάφα, Caiaphas, ἐγένετο came ῥῆμα [the] word Θεοῦ of God ἐπί upon Ἰωάννην John, τόν - Ζαχαρίου of Zechariah υἱόν son, ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ. wilderness. Καί And ἦλθεν he went εἰς into πᾶσαν all τήν the περίχωρον surrounding region τοῦ of the Ἰορδάνου Jordan, κηρύσσων proclaiming βάπτισμα a baptism μετανοίας of repentance εἰς for ἄφεσιν forgiveness ἁμαρτιῶν, of sins, ὡς as γέγραπται it has been written ἐν in βίβλῳ [the] book λόγων of [the] words Ἠσαΐου of Isaiah τοῦ the προφήτου· prophet: Φωνή [The] voice βοῶντος of one crying ἐν in τῇ the ἐρήμῳ· wilderness, Ἑτοιμάσατε Prepare τήν the ὁδόν way Κυρίου, of [the] Lord; εὐθείας straight ποιεῖτε make τάς the τρίβους paths αὐτοῦ· of Him. πᾶσα Every φάραγξ valley πληρωθήσεται will be filled, καί and πᾶν every ὄρος mountain καί and βουνός hill ταπεινωθήσεται, will be made low; καί and ἔσται will become τά the σκολιά crooked εἰς into εὐθείαν straight, καί and αἱ the τραχεῖαι rough εἰς into ὁδούς ways λείας· smooth; καί and ὄψεται will see πᾶσα all σάρξ flesh τό the σωτήριον salvation τοῦ - Θεοῦ. of God.”

Ἔλεγεν He was saying οὖν therefore τοῖς to the ἐκπορευομένοις coming out ὄχλοις crowds βαπτισθῆναι to be baptized ὑπ ̓ by αὐτοῦ· him, Γεννήματα Offspring ἐχιδνῶν, of vipers, τίς who ὑπέδειξεν forewarned ὑμῖν you φυγεῖν to flee ἀπό from τῆς the μελλούσης coming ὀργῆς; wrath? ποιήσατε Produce οὖν therefore καρπούς fruits ἀξίους worthy τῆς - μετανοίας of repentance; καί and μή not ἄρξησθε begin λέγειν to say ἐν in ἑαυτοῖς· yourselves, Πατέρα [As] father ἔχομεν We have τόν - Ἀβραάμ. Abraham. λέγω I say γάρ for ὑμῖν to you, ὅτι that δύναται is able ὁ - Θεός God ἐκ from τῶν - λίθων stones τούτων these ἐγεῖραι to raise up τέκνα children τῷ - Ἀβραάμ. to Abraham. ἤδη Already δέ now καί also ἡ the ἀξίνη ax πρός to τήν the ῥίζαν root τῶν of the δένδρων trees κεῖται· is applied; πᾶν every οὖν therefore δένδρον tree μή not ποιοῦν producing καρπόν fruit καλόν good ἐκκόπτεται is cut down καί and εἰς into πῦρ [the] fire βάλλεται. is thrown.

Καί And ἐπηρώτων were asking αὐτόν him οἱ the ὄχλοι crowds, λέγοντες· saying, Τί What οὖν then ποιήσωμεν; shall we do? Ἀποκριθείς Answering δέ now, ἔλεγεν he was saying αὐτοῖς· to them, ὁ The [one] ἔχων having δύο two χιτῶνας tunics, μεταδότω let him impart τῷ to the [one] μή none ἔχοντι, having; καί and ὁ the [one] ἔχων having βρώματα food, ὁμοίως likewise ποιείτω. let him do. Ἦλθον Came δέ then καί also τελῶναι tax collectors βαπτισθῆναι to be baptized, καί and εἶπαν they said πρός to αὐτόν· him, Διδάσκαλε, Teacher, τί what ποιήσωμεν; shall we do? ὁ - δέ And εἶπεν he said πρός to αὐτούς· them, Μηδέν Nothing πλέον more παρά beyond τό that διατεταγμένον having been appointed ὑμῖν to you πράσσετε. collect. Ἐπηρώτων Were asking δέ then αὐτόν him καί also στρατευόμενοι those being soldiers, λέγοντες· saying, Τί What ποιήσωμεν shall do καί also ἡμεῖς; we? Καί And εἶπεν he said αὐτοῖς· to them, Μηδένα No one διασείσητε extort μηδέ nor συκοφαντήσητε accuse falsely, καί and ἀρκεῖσθε be content with τοῖς the ὀψωνίοις wages ὑμῶν. of you.

Προσδοκῶντος Are expecting δέ then τοῦ the λαοῦ people καί and διαλογιζομένων wondering πάντων all ἐν in ταῖς the καρδίαις hearts αὐτῶν of them περί concerning τοῦ - Ἰωάννου, John, μήποτε whether ever αὐτός he εἴη might be ὁ the Χριστός, Christ. ἀπεκρίνατο Answered λέγων saying πᾶσιν [to] all ὁ - Ἰωάννης· John, Ἐγώ I μέν indeed ὕδατι with water βαπτίζω baptize ὑμᾶς· you; ἔρχεται comes δέ however ὁ the [One] ἰσχυρότερος mightier μου, than I, οὗ of whom οὐ not εἰμί I am ἱκανός worthy λῦσαι to untie τόν the ἱμάντα strap τῶν of the ὑποδημάτων sandals αὐτοῦ· of Him; αὐτός He ὑμᾶς you βαπτίσει will baptize ἐν with Πνεύματι [the] Spirit Ἁγίῳ Holy, καί and πυρί· with fire, οὗ of whom τό the πτύον winnowing fork [is] ἐν in τῇ the χειρί hand αὐτοῦ of Him, διακαθᾶραι to clear τήν the ἅλωνα threshing floor αὐτοῦ of Him καί and συναγαγεῖν to gather τόν the σῖτον wheat εἰς into τήν the ἀποθήκην barn αὐτοῦ, of Him. τό - δέ But ἄχυρον the chaff κατακαύσει He will burn up πυρί with fire ἀσβέστῳ. unquenchable.

Πολλά Many μέν indeed οὖν therefore καί other ἕτερα things παρακαλῶν exhorting, εὐηγγελίζετο he was preaching the good news to τόν the λαόν. people. ὁ - δέ And Ἡρῴδης Herod ὁ the τετραάρχης, tetrarch, ἐλεγχόμενος being reproved ὑπ ̓ by αὐτοῦ him περί concerning Ἡρῳδιάδος Herodias, τῆς the γυναικός wife τοῦ of the ἀδελφοῦ brother αὐτοῦ of him, καί and περί concerning πάντων all ὧν that ἐποίησεν had done πονηρῶν [the] evils ὁ - Ἡρῴδης, Herod, προσέθηκεν added καί yet τοῦτο this ἐπί to πᾶσιν all: καί Also κατέκλεισεν he locked up τόν - Ἰωάννην John ἐν in φυλακῇ. prison.
