Ἐπειδήπερ Inasmuch as πολλοί many ἐπεχείρησαν have undertaken ἀνατάξασθαι to draw up διήγησιν a narration περί concerning τῶν the πεπληροφορημένων having been accomplished ἐν among ἡμῖν us πραγμάτων, things, καθώς as παρέδοσαν delivered [them] ἡμῖν to us οἱ those ἀπ ̓ from ἀρχῆς [the] beginning αὐτόπται eyewitnesses καί and ὑπηρέται servants γενόμενοι having been τοῦ of the λόγου, word, ἔδοξε it seemed good κἀμοί also to me, παρηκολουθηκότι having been acquainted ἄνωθεν from the first πᾶσιν with all things, ἀκριβῶς carefully καθεξῆς with method σοι to you γράψαι, to write, κράτιστε most excellent Θεόφιλε, Theophilus, ἵνα so that ἐπιγνῷς you may know περί concerning ὧν which κατηχήθης you were instructed, λόγων [of the] things, τήν the ἀσφάλειαν. certainty.

Ἐγένετο There was ἐν in ταῖς the ἡμέραις days Ἡρῴδου of Herod βασιλέως king τῆς - Ἰουδαίας of Judea ἱερεύς a priest τὶς certain, ὀνόματι named Ζαχαρίας Zechariah, ἐκ of [the] ἐφημερίας division Ἀβιά, of Abijah, καί and γυνή wife αὐτῷ of him ἐκ of τῶν the θυγατέρων daughters Ἀαρών of Aaron, καί and τό the ὄνομα name αὐτῆς of her Ἐλισάβετ. Καί And εἶπεν said Ζαχαρίας Zechariah πρός to τόν the ἄγγελον· angel, Κατά By τί what γνώσομαι will I know τοῦτο; this? ἐγώ I γάρ for εἰμί am πρεσβύτης an old man, καί and ἡ the γυνή wife μου of me προβεβηκυῖα is advanced ἐν in ταῖς the ἡμέραις years αὐτῆς. of her. Μετά After δέ then ταύτας these τάς - ἡμέρας days συνέλαβεν conceived Ἐλισάβετ Elizabeth ἡ the γυνή wife αὐτοῦ of him, καί and περιέκρυβεν hid ἑαυτήν herself μῆνας months πέντε five, λέγουσα saying, ὅτι - Οὕτως Thus μοι to me πεποίηκεν has done Κύριος the Lord, ἐν in ἡμέραις [the] days αἷς in which ἐπεῖδεν He looked upon [me], ἀφελεῖν to take away ὄνειδος [the] disgrace μου of me ἐν among ἀνθρώποις. men. ἐν In δέ now τῷ the μηνί month τῷ - ἕκτῳ sixth, ἀπεστάλη was sent ὁ the ἄγγελος angel Γαβριήλ Gabriel ἀπό by τοῦ - Θεοῦ God εἰς to πόλιν a city τῆς - Γαλιλαίας of Galilee, ᾗ whose ὄνομα name [was] Ναζαρέθ Nazareth, πρός to παρθένον a virgin ἐμνηστευμένην betrothed ἀνδρί to a man, ᾧ whose ὄνομα name [was] Ἰωσήφ Joseph, ἐκ of οἴκου [the] house Δαυίδ of David; καί and τό the ὄνομα name τῆς of the παρθένου virgin Μαριάμ. [was] Mary. καί And εἰσελθών having come πρός to αὐτήν her, εἶπεν· he said, Χαῖρε, Greetings, κεχαριτωμένη, [you] favored with grace! ὁ The Κύριος Lord [is] μετά with σοῦ. you.” ἡ - δέ And ἐπί at τῷ the λόγῳ statement διεταράχθη she was troubled, καί and διελογίζετο was pondering ποταπός what kind εἴη might be ὁ the ἀσπασμός salutation οὗτος. this. καί And εἶπεν said ὁ the ἄγγελος angel αὐτῇ· to her, Μή Not φοβοῦ, fear, Μαριάμ, Mary; εὗρες you have found γάρ for χάριν favor παρά with τῷ - Θεῷ. God; καί and ἰδού behold, συλλήμψῃ you will conceive ἐν in γαστρί womb, καί and τέξῃ will bring forth υἱόν a son, καί and καλέσεις you shall call τό the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ of Him Ἰησοῦν. Jesus. οὗτος He ἔσται will be μέγας great, καί and Υἱός Son Ὑψίστου of [the] Most High κληθήσεται He will be called; καί and δώσει will give αὐτῷ Him Κύριος [the] Lord ὁ - Θεός God τόν the θρόνον throne Δαυίδ of David, τοῦ of the πατρός father αὐτοῦ, of Him; καί and βασιλεύσει He will reign ἐπί over τόν the οἶκον house Ἰακώβ of Jacob εἰς to τούς the αἰῶνας ages; καί and τῆς of the βασιλείας kingdom αὐτοῦ of Him οὐ not ἔσται there will be τέλος. an end!

Εἶπεν Said δέ then Μαριάμ Mary πρός to τόν the ἄγγελον· angel, Πῶς How ἔσται will be τοῦτο, this, ἐπεί since ἄνδρα a man οὐ not γινώσκω; I know? Καί And ἀποκριθείς answering, ὁ the ἄγγελος angel εἶπεν said αὐτῇ· to her, Πνεῦμα [the] Spirit Ἅγιον Holy ἐπελεύσεται will come ἐπί upon σέ you, καί and δύναμις power Ὑψίστου of [the] Most High ἐπισκιάσει will overshadow σοι· you; διό therefore καί also τό the γεννώμενον being born ἅγιον Holy [One] κληθήσεται will be called Υἱός [the] Son Θεοῦ. of God.

καί And ἰδού behold, Ἐλισάβετ Elizabeth, ἡ the συγγενίς relative σου of you, καί also αὐτή she συνείληφεν has conceived υἱόν a son ἐν in γήρει old age αὐτῆς her, καί and οὗτος this μήν month ἕκτος [the] sixth ἐστίν is αὐτῇ to her τῇ who καλουμένῃ [was] called στείρᾳ· barren. ὅτι For οὐ not ἀδυνατήσει will be impossible παρά with τοῦ - Θεοῦ God πᾶν every ῥῆμα. thing. Εἶπεν Said δέ then Μαριάμ· Mary, Ἰδού Behold, ἡ the δούλη handmaid Κυρίου· of [the] Lord. γένοιτο May it happen μοι to me κατά according to τό the ῥῆμα word σου. of you. καί And ἀπῆλθεν departed ἀπ ̓ from αὐτῆς her ὁ the ἄγγελος. angel.

Ἀναστᾶσα Having risen up δέ then Μαριάμ Mary ἐν in ταῖς the ἡμέραις days ταύταις this, ἐπορεύθη she went εἰς into τήν the ὀρεινήν hill country μετά with σπουδῆς haste, εἰς to πόλιν a town Ἰούδα, of Judah, καί and εἰσῆλθεν she entered εἰς into τόν the οἶκον house Ζαχαρίου of Zechariah καί and ἠσπάσατο greeted τήν - Ἐλισάβετ. Elizabeth. καί And ἐγένετο it came to pass, ὡς as ἤκουσεν heard τόν the ἀσπασμόν greeting τῆς - Μαρίας of Mary ἡ - Ἐλισάβετ, Elizabeth, ἐσκίρτησεν leaped τό the βρέφος baby ἐν in τῇ the κοιλίᾳ womb αὐτῆς, of her; καί and ἐπλήσθη was filled Πνεύματος with [the] Spirit Ἁγίου Holy ἡ - Ἐλισάβετ, Elizabeth, καί and ἀνεφώνησεν she cried out κραυγῇ in a voice μεγάλῃ loud καί and εἶπεν· said, Εὐλογημένη Blessed are σύ you ἐν among γυναιξίν women, καί and εὐλογημένος blessed is ὁ the καρπός fruit τῆς of the κοιλίας womb σου. of you.

καί And πόθεν from where μοι to me τοῦτο this, ἵνα that ἔλθῃ should come ἡ the μήτηρ mother τοῦ of the Κυρίου Lord μου of me πρός to ἐμέ; me? ἰδού Behold γάρ for, ὡς as ἐγένετο came ἡ the φωνή voice τοῦ of the ἀσπασμοῦ greeting σου of you εἰς into τά the ὦτα ears μου, of me, ἐσκίρτησεν leaped ἐν in ἀγαλλιάσει exultation τό the βρέφος baby ἐν in τῇ the κοιλίᾳ womb μου. of me. καί And μακαρία blessed [is] ἡ the [one] πιστεύσασα having believed ὅτι that ἔσται there will be τελείωσις a fulfillment τοῖς to the things λελαλημένοις spoken αὐτῇ to her παρά from Κυρίου. Καί And εἶπεν said Μαριάμ· Mary: Μεγαλύνει Magnifies ἡ the ψυχή soul μου of Me τόν the Κύριον, Lord, καί and ἠγαλλίασεν rejoices τό the πνεῦμα spirit μου of me ἐπί in τῷ - Θεῷ God, τῷ the Σωτῆρι Savior μου, of me. ὅτι For ἐπέβλεψεν He has looked ἐπί upon τήν the ταπείνωσιν humiliation τῆς of the δούλης handmaiden αὐτοῦ. of Him. ἰδού Behold γάρ for ἀπό from τοῦ - νῦν henceforth μακαριοῦσιν will count blessed με me πᾶσαι all αἱ the γενεαί, generations. ὅτι For ἐποίησεν has done μοι to me μεγάλα great things ὁ the δυνατός. Mighty One. καί And ἅγιον holy [is] τό the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ, of Him. καί And τό the ἔλεος mercy αὐτοῦ of Him εἰς [is] to γενεάς generations καί and γενεάς generations, τοῖς to those φοβουμένοις fearing αὐτόν. Him. Ἔμεινεν Dwelt δέ then Μαριάμ Mary σύν with αὐτῇ her ὡς about μῆνας months τρεῖς, three, καί and ὑπέστρεψεν returned εἰς to τόν the οἶκον home αὐτῆς. of her.

Τῇ To δέ now Ἐλισάβετ Elizabeth ἐπλήσθη was fulfilled ὁ the χρόνος time τοῦ - τεκεῖν to give birth αὐτήν for her, καί and ἐγέννησεν she bore υἱόν. a son. καί And ἤκουσαν heard οἱ the περίοικοι neighbors καί and οἱ - συγγενεῖς relatives αὐτῆς of her ὅτι that ἐμεγάλυνεν was magnifying Κύριος [the] Lord τό the ἔλεος mercy αὐτοῦ of Him μετ ̓ with αὐτῆς her, καί and συνέχαιρον they were rejoicing with αὐτῇ. her. Καί And ἐγένετο it came to pass ἐν on τῇ - ἡμέρᾳ day τῇ the ὀγδόῃ eighth, ἦλθον they came περιτεμεῖν to circumcise τό the παιδίον child, καί and ἐκάλουν were calling αὐτό it ἐπί after τῷ the ὀνόματι name τοῦ of the πατρός father αὐτοῦ of him, Ζαχαρίαν. Zechariah. καί And ἀποκριθεῖσα answering, ἡ the μήτηρ mother αὐτοῦ of him εἶπεν· said, Οὐχί, No, ἀλλά but κληθήσεται he will be called Ἰωάννης. John. Καί And εἶπαν they said πρός to αὐτήν her ὅτι -, Οὐδείς No one ἐστίν is ἐκ among τῆς the συγγενείας relatives σου of you, ὅς who καλεῖται is called τῷ the ὀνόματι name τούτῳ. by this. ἐνένευον They were making signs δέ then τῷ to the πατρί father αὐτοῦ of him, τό the τί what ἄν - θέλοι he might wish καλεῖσθαι to be called αὐτό. him. God. Καί And ἐγένετο came ἐπί upon πάντας all φόβος fear, τούς those περιοικοῦντας dwelling around αὐτούς, them; καί and ἐν in ὅλῃ all τῇ the ὀρεινῇ hill country τῆς - Ἰουδαίας of Judea διελαλεῖτο were being talked about πάντα all τά the things, ῥήματα words ταῦτα, these. καί And ἔθεντο laid [them] up πάντες all οἱ those ἀκούσαντες having heard, ἐν in τῇ the καρδίᾳ heart αὐτῶν of them, λέγοντες· saying, Τί What ἄρα then τό the παιδίον child τοῦτο this ἔσται; will be?
