Καί And ἐξελθόντες having gone out, ἐκήρυξαν they preached ἵνα that μετανοῶσιν, they should repent. καί And δαιμόνια demons πολλά many ἐξέβαλλον, they were casting out, καί and ἤλειφον were anointing ἐλαίῳ with oil πολλούς many ἀρρώστους sick καί and ἐθεράπευον. healing [them].
Καί And ἤκουσεν heard ὁ - βασιλεύς King Ἡρῴδης, Herod; φανερόν well known γάρ for ἐγένετο became τό the ὄνομα name αὐτοῦ, of Him. καί And ἔλεγον they were saying ὅτι -, Ἰωάννης John, ὁ the [one] Βαπτίζων baptizing, ἐγήγερται is risen ἐκ out from νεκρῶν [the] dead, καί and διά because of τοῦτο this ἐνεργοῦσιν operate αἱ the δυνάμεις miraculous powers ἐν in αὐτῷ. him. ἄλλοι Others δέ however ἔλεγον were saying ὅτι -, Ἠλίας Elijah ἐστίν· He is. ἄλλοι Others δέ now ἔλεγον were saying ὅτι -, Προφήτης A prophet, ὡς like εἷς one τῶν of the προφητῶν. prophets. Ἀκούσας Having heard δέ now, ὁ - Ἡρῴδης Herod ἔλεγεν· was saying, Ὅν Whom ἐγώ I ἀπεκεφάλισα beheaded, Ἰωάννην, John — οὗτος he ἠγέρθη. is risen!
Αὐτός Himself γάρ for ὁ - Ἡρῴδης Herod, ἀποστείλας having sent, ἐκράτησεν seized τόν - Ἰωάννην John καί and ἔδησεν bound αὐτόν him ἐν in φυλακῇ prison, διά on account of Ἡρῳδιάδα Herodias, τήν the γυναῖκα wife Φιλίππου of Philip τοῦ the ἀδελφοῦ brother αὐτοῦ, of him, ὅτι because αὐτήν her ἐγάμησεν· he had married. ἔλεγεν Had been saying γάρ for ὁ - Ἰωάννης John τῷ - Ἡρῴδῃ to Herod ὅτι -, οὐκ Not ἔξεστιν it is lawful σοι for you ἔχειν to have τήν the γυναῖκα wife τοῦ of the ἀδελφοῦ brother σου. of you. ἡ - δέ And Ἡρῳδιάς Herodias ἐνεῖχεν held it αὐτῷ against him, καί and ἤθελεν wished αὐτόν him ἀποκτεῖναι, to kill, καί and οὐ not ἠδύνατο· was able; ὁ - γάρ for Ἡρῴδης Herod ἐφοβεῖτο was afraid of τόν - Ἰωάννην, John, εἰδώς knowing αὐτόν him ἄνδρα [to be] a man δίκαιον righteous καί and ἅγιον, holy; καί and συνετήρει he kept safe αὐτόν, him. καί And ἀκούσας having heard αὐτοῦ him, πολλά greatly ἠπόρει, he was perplexed καί and ἡδέως gladly αὐτοῦ him ἤκουεν. heard.
Καί And γενομένης having come ἡμέρας [a] day εὐκαίρου opportune, ὅτε when Ἡρῴδης Herod τοῖς on the γενεσίοις birthday αὐτοῦ of him δεῖπνον a banquet ἐποίησεν made τοῖς to the μεγιστᾶσιν great men αὐτοῦ of him, καί and τοῖς to the χιλιάρχοις chief captains, καί and τοῖς to the πρώτοις leading [men] τῆς - Γαλιλαίας, of Galilee, καί and εἰσελθούσης having come in τῆς the θυγατρός daughter αὐτοῦ of him Ἡρῳδιάδος Herodias, καί and ὀρχησαμένης having danced, ἤρεσεν pleased τῷ - Ἡρῴδῃ Herod καί and τοῖς those συνανακειμένοις. reclining with [him]. εἶπεν said ὁ the βασιλεύς king τῷ to the κορασίῳ· girl, Αἴτησον Ask με me ὅ whatever ἐάν if θέλῃς, you wish, καί and δώσω I will give σοι· to you. καί And ὤμοσεν he swore αὐτῇ to her, Πολλά Whatever Ὅ τὶ that ἐάν if με me αἰτήσῃς you might ask, δώσω I will give σοι you, ἕως up to ἡμίσους half τῆς of the βασιλείας kingdom μου. of me. Καί And ἐξελθοῦσα having gone out, εἶπεν she said τῇ to the μητρί mother αὐτῆς· of her, Τί What αἰτήσωμαι; shall I ask? ἡ - δέ And εἶπεν· she said, Τήν The κεφαλήν head Ἰωάννου of John τοῦ the [one] Βαπτίζοντος. baptizing. Καί And εἰσελθοῦσα having entered εὐθύς immediately μετά with σπουδῆς haste πρός to τόν the βασιλέα king, ᾐτήσατο she asked, λέγουσα· saying, Θέλω I desire ἵνα that ἐξαυτῆς at once δῷς you give μοι to me ἐπί upon πίνακι a platter τήν the κεφαλήν head Ἰωάννου of John τοῦ the Βαπτιστοῦ. Baptist. Καί And περίλυπος encompassingly sorrowful γενόμενος having been made ὁ the βασιλεύς king, διά on account of τούς the ὅρκους oaths καί and τούς those ἀνακειμένους reclining with [him], οὐ not ἠθέλησεν was he willing ἀθετῆσαι to refuse αὐτήν· her. καί And εὐθύς immediately ἀποστείλας having sent ὁ the βασιλεύς king σπεκουλάτορα an executioner, ἐπέταξεν he commanded ἐνέγκαι to be brought τήν the κεφαλήν head αὐτοῦ. of him. καί And ἀπελθών having gone, ἀπεκεφάλισεν he beheaded αὐτόν him ἐν in τῇ the φυλακῇ prison, καί and ἤνεγκεν brought τήν the κεφαλήν head αὐτοῦ of him ἐπί upon πίνακι a platter, καί and ἔδωκεν gave αὐτήν it τῷ to the κορασίῳ, girl, καί and τό the κοράσιον girl ἔδωκεν gave αὐτήν it τῇ to the μητρί mother αὐτῆς. of her. καί And ἀκούσαντες having heard [it], οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of him ἦλθον came, καί and ἦραν took up τό the πτῶμα body αὐτοῦ of him, καί and ἔθηκαν laid αὐτό it ἐν in μνημείῳ. [a] tomb.
Καί And συνάγονται are gathered together οἱ the ἀπόστολοι apostles πρός to τόν - Ἰησοῦν Jesus, καί and ἀπήγγειλαν they related αὐτῷ to him πάντα all things, ὅσα what ἐποίησαν they had done καί and ὅσα what ἐδίδαξαν. they had taught. καί And λέγει He said αὐτοῖς· to them, Δεῦτε Come ὑμεῖς you αὐτοί yourselves κατ ̓ apart ἰδίαν own εἰς to ἔρημον [a] solitary τόπον place, καί and ἀναπαύσασθε rest ὀλίγον. a little. ἦσαν Were γάρ for οἱ those ἐρχόμενοι coming καί and οἱ those ὑπάγοντες going πολλοί, many, καί and οὐδέ not even φαγεῖν to eat εὐκαίρουν. had they opportunity.
Καί And ἀπῆλθον they went away ἐν by τῷ the πλοίῳ boat εἰς into ἔρημον [a] solitary τόπον place κατ ̓ by ἰδίαν. themselves. καί And εἶδον they saw αὐτούς them ὑπάγοντας going, καί and ἐπέγνωσαν recognized πολλοί many, καί and πεζῇ on foot ἀπό from πασῶν all τῶν the πόλεων cities συνέδραμον ran together ἐκεῖ there, καί and προῆλθον went before αὐτούς. them.
Καί And ἐξελθών having gone out, εἶδεν He saw πολύν a great ὄχλον crowd καί and ἐσπλαγχνίσθη was moved with compassion ἐπ ̓ toward αὐτούς, them, ὅτι because ἦσαν they were ὡς like πρόβατα sheep μή not ἔχοντα having ποιμένα, a shepherd. καί And ἤρξατο He began διδάσκειν to teach αὐτούς them πολλά. many things.
Καί And ἤδη already ὥρας the hour πολλῆς late γενομένης being, προσελθόντες having come αὐτῷ to Him, οἱ the μαθηταί disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ἔλεγον were saying ὅτι -, Ἔρημος Desolate ἐστίν is ὁ the τόπος place, καί and ἤδη already [it is] ὥρα an hour πολλή· late. ἀπόλυσον Dismiss αὐτούς, them, ἵνα that ἀπελθόντες having gone εἰς to τούς the κύκλῳ surrounding ἀγρούς region καί and κώμας villages, ἀγοράσωσιν they might buy ἑαυτοῖς for themselves τί something φάγωσιν. to eat. ὁ - δέ But ἀποκριθείς answering, εἶπεν He said αὐτοῖς· to them, Δότε Give αὐτοῖς to them ὑμεῖς you φαγεῖν. [something] to eat. Καί And λέγουσιν they say αὐτῷ· to Him, Ἀπελθόντες Having gone, ἀγοράσωμεν shall we buy δηναρίων denarii διακοσίων two hundred ἄρτους of bread, καί and δώσομεν give αὐτοῖς them φαγεῖν; to eat? ὁ - δέ And λέγει He says αὐτοῖς· to them, Πόσους How many ἄρτους loaves? ἔχετε; have you ὑπάγετε Go, ἴδετε. see. Καί And γνόντες having known, λέγουσιν· they say, Πέντε, Five, καί and δύο two ἰχθύας. fish. Καί And ἐπέταξεν He commanded αὐτοῖς them ἀνακλῖναι to make recline πάντας all, συμπόσια groups συμπόσια [by] groups ἐπί on τῷ the χλωρῷ green χόρτῳ. grass. καί And ἀνέπεσαν they sat down πρασιαί groups πρασιαί [by] groups, κατά by ἑκατόν hundreds καί and κατά by πεντήκοντα. fifties. Καί And λαβών having taken τούς the πέντε five ἄρτους loaves καί and τούς the δύο two ἰχθύας fish, ἀναβλέψας having looked up εἰς to τόν the οὐρανόν heaven, εὐλόγησεν He blessed καί and κατέκλασεν broke τούς the ἄρτους loaves, καί and ἐδίδου He kept giving [them] τοῖς to the μαθηταῖς disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ἵνα that παρατιθῶσιν they might set before αὐτοῖς, them. καί And τούς the δύο two ἰχθύας fish ἐμέρισεν He divided πᾶσιν. among all. Καί And ἔφαγον ate πάντες all καί and ἐχορτάσθησαν, were satisfied. καί And ἦραν they took up κλάσματα of fragments δώδεκα twelve κοφίνων hand-baskets πληρώματα full, καί and ἀπό of τῶν the ἰχθύων. fish. καί And ἦσαν were οἱ those φαγόντες having eaten of τούς the ἄρτους loaves πεντακισχίλιοι five thousand ἄνδρες. men.
Καί And εὐθύς immediately ἠνάγκασεν He compelled τούς the μαθητάς disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ἐμβῆναι to enter εἰς into τό the πλοῖον boat καί and προάγειν to go before εἰς to τό the πέραν other side, πρός to Βηθσαϊδάν, Bethsaida, ἕως until αὐτός He ἀπολύει should dismiss τόν the ὄχλον. crowd. καί And ἀποταξάμενος having taken leave of αὐτοῖς them, ἀπῆλθεν He departed εἰς into τό the ὄρος mountain προσεύξασθαι. to pray. Καί And ὀψίας evening γενομένης having come, ἦν was τό the πλοῖον boat ἐν in μέσῳ the midst τῆς of the θαλάσσης, sea, καί and αὐτός He μόνος alone ἐπί upon τῆς the γῆς. land. καί And ἰδών He having seen αὐτούς them βασανιζομένους straining ἐν in τῷ the ἐλαύνειν, rowing, ἦν was γάρ for ὁ the ἄνεμος wind ἐναντίος contrary αὐτοῖς, to them. περί About τετάρτην [the] fourth φυλακήν watch τῆς of the νυκτός night ἔρχεται He comes πρός to αὐτούς them, περιπατῶν walking ἐπί on τῆς the θαλάσσης sea, καί and ἤθελεν He was wishing παρελθεῖν to pass by αὐτούς. them. οἱ - δέ And ἰδόντες having seen αὐτόν Him ἐπί on τῆς the θαλάσσης sea περιπατοῦντα walking, ἔδοξαν they thought ὅτι that φάντασμα a ghost ἐστίν, [it] is, καί and ἀνέκραξαν· cried out. πάντες All γάρ for αὐτόν Him εἶδον saw καί and ἐταράχθησαν. were troubled. ὁ - Δέ And εὐθύς immediately ἐλάλησεν He spoke μετ ̓ with αὐτῶν, them, καί and λέγει says αὐτοῖς· to them, Θαρσεῖτε, Take courage; ἐγώ I εἰμί· am [He]; μή not φοβεῖσθε. fear. καί And ἀνέβη He went up πρός to αὐτούς them εἰς into τό the πλοῖον boat, καί and ἐκόπασεν ceased ὁ the ἄνεμος, wind. καί And λίαν exceedingly ἐκ in περισσοῦ abundance ἐν in ἑαυτοῖς themselves ἐξίσταντο· they were amazed, οὐ not γάρ for συνῆκαν they understood ἐπί by τοῖς the ἄρτοις, loaves; ἀλλ ̓ but ἦν had been αὐτῶν of them ἡ the καρδία heart πεπωρωμένη. hardened.
Καί And διαπεράσαντες having passed over ἐπί to τήν the γῆν land, ἦλθον they came εἰς to Γεννησαρέτ Gennesaret καί and προσωρμίσθησαν. drew to shore. καί And ἐξελθόντων on having come αὐτῶν of them ἐκ out of τοῦ the πλοίου boat, εὐθύς immediately ἐπιγνόντες having recognized αὐτόν Him, περιέδραμον they ran around ὅλην all τήν the χώραν country ἐκείνην that, καί and ἤρξαντο they began ἐπί on τοῖς the κραβάττοις mats τούς those κακῶς sick ἔχοντας being περιφέρειν to carry about, ὅπου to wherever ἤκουον they were hearing ὅτι that ἐστίν. He is. καί And ὅπου wherever ἄν - εἰσεπορεύετο He entered εἰς into κώμας villages ἤ or εἰς into πόλεις cities ἤ or εἰς into ἀγρούς, fields, ἐν in ταῖς the ἀγοραῖς marketplaces ἐτίθεσαν they were laying τούς the ἀσθενοῦντας ailing, καί and παρεκάλουν were begging αὐτόν Him ἵνα that κἄν only τοῦ the κρασπέδου fringe τοῦ the ἱματίου clothing αὐτοῦ of Him ἅψωνται· they might touch; καί and ὅσοι as many as ἄν - ἥψαντο touched αὐτοῦ Him ἐσῴζοντο. were being healed.
Καί And συνάγονται are gathered together πρός to αὐτόν Him οἱ the Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees καί and τινές some τῶν of the γραμματέων scribes, ἐλθόντες having come ἀπό from Ἱεροσολύμων. Jerusalem. καί And ἰδόντες they had seen τινάς some τῶν of the μαθητῶν disciples αὐτοῦ of Him ὅτι that κοιναῖς with defiled χερσίν, hands, τοῦτ ̓ that ἔστιν is ἀνίπτοις, unwashed, ἐσθίουσιν are eating τούς the ἄρτους— bread. οἱ - γάρ For Φαρισαῖοι the Pharisees καί and πάντες all οἱ the Ἰουδαῖοι Jews, ἐάν if μή not πυγμῇ carefully νίψωνται they wash τάς the χεῖρας hands, οὐ not ἐσθίουσιν, eat, κρατοῦντες holding τήν the παράδοσιν tradition τῶν of the πρεσβυτέρων, elders; καί and ἀπ ̓ [on coming] from ἀγορᾶς the market, ἐάν if μή not βαπτίσωνται they wash οὐ not ἐσθίουσιν, they eat; καί and ἄλλα other things πολλά many ἐστίν there are ἅ which παρέλαβον they received κρατεῖν, [for them] to hold to — βαπτισμούς washings ποτηρίων of cups καί and ξεστῶν vessels καί and χαλκίων utensils καί and κλινῶν— couches for dining. Καί And ἐπερωτῶσιν questioned αὐτόν Him οἱ the Φαρισαῖοι Pharisees καί and οἱ the γραμματεῖς· scribes, Διά Because of τί why οὐ not περιπατοῦσιν walk οἱ the μαθηταί disciples σου of You κατά according to τήν the παράδοσιν tradition τῶν of the πρεσβυτέρων, elders, ἀλλά but κοιναῖς with unwashed χερσίν hands ἐσθίουσιν eat τόν the ἄρτον; bread?
ὁ - δέ And εἶπεν He said αὐτοῖς· to them, Καλῶς Rightly ἐπροφήτευσεν prophesied Ἠσαΐας Isaiah περί concerning ὑμῶν you τῶν - ὑποκριτῶν, hypocrites, ὡς as γέγραπται it has been written ὅτι -: Οὗτος This ὁ - λαός people τοῖς with the χείλεσιν lips με Me τιμᾷ, honors, ἡ - δέ but καρδία the heart αὐτῶν of them πόρρω far away ἀπέχει is kept ἀπ ̓ from ἐμοῦ· Me. Μάτην In vain δέ now σέβονται they worship με Me, Διδάσκοντες teaching διδασκαλίας [as] doctrines ἐντάλματα [the] precepts ἀνθρώπων. of men.’
Ἀφέντες Having neglected τήν the ἐντολήν commandment τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God, κρατεῖτε you hold τήν to the παράδοσιν tradition τῶν - ἀνθρώπων. of men.” Καί And ἔλεγεν He was saying αὐτοῖς· to them, Καλῶς Neatly ἀθετεῖτε do you set aside τήν the ἐντολήν commandment τοῦ - Θεοῦ, of God, ἵνα that τήν the παράδοσιν tradition ὑμῶν of you, τηρήσητε. you might keep. Μωϋσῆς Moses γάρ for εἶπεν· said, Τίμα Honor τόν the πατέρα Father σου of you καί and τήν the μητέρα mother σου, of you,’ καί· and, ὁ The [one] κακολογῶν speaking evil of πατέρα father ἤ or μητέρα mother, θανάτῳ in death τελευτάτω. must end.’ ὑμεῖς You δέ however λέγετε· say [that] Ἐάν if εἴπῃ says ἄνθρωπος a man τῷ to the πατρί father ἤ or τῇ the μητρί· mother, Κορβᾶν, [It is] Corban, ὅ that ἐστίν is, Δῶρον, a gift, Ὅ whatever ἐάν if ἐκ from ἐμοῦ me ὠφεληθῇς, you might be profited, οὐκέτι no longer ἀφίετε do you allow αὐτόν him οὐδέν anything ποιῆσαι to do τῷ for the πατρί father ἤ or τῇ the μητρί, mother, ἀκυροῦντες making void τόν the λόγον word τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God τῇ for the παραδόσει tradition ὑμῶν of you ᾗ which παρεδώκατε· you have handed down. καί And παρόμοια like [things] τοιαῦτα such πολλά many ποιεῖτε. you do.
Καί And προσκαλεσάμενος having called to [Him] πάλιν again τόν the ὄχλον crowd, ἔλεγεν He was saying αὐτοῖς· to them, Ἀκούσατε Listen to μου Me, πάντες all, καί and σύνετε. understand: οὐδέν Nothing ἐστίν there is ἔξωθεν from outside τοῦ the ἀνθρώπου man εἰσπορευόμενον entering εἰς into αὐτόν him, ὅ which δύναται is able κοινῶσαι to defile αὐτόν, him; ἀλλά but τά the things ἐκ out of τοῦ the ἀνθρώπου man ἐκπορευόμενα proceeding ἐστίν are τά the things κοινοῦντα defiling τόν the ἄνθρωπον. man.”
