Καί And ἐλυπήθη was grieved Ἰωνᾶς Jonah λύπην grief μεγάλην, (with) great καί and συνεχύθη· was confused. καί And προσεύξατο he prayed πρός to Κύριον (the) Lord καί and εἶπεν said: Ὦ O Κύριε, Lord, οὐ not οὗτοι (were) these οἱ - λόγοι words μου, my ἔτι still ὄντος was μου (while) I ἐν in τῇ - γῇ land? μου; my διά On account of τοῦτο this προέφθασα I anticipated τοῦ - φυγεῖν to flee εἰς into Θαρσείς, Tarshish διότι because ἔγνων I knew ὅτι that σύ you ἐλεήμων (are) compassionate καί and οἰκτίρμων, merciful, μακρόθυμος patient καί and πολυέλεος very merciful καί and μετανοῶν (willing to) reconsider ἐπί - ταῖς - κακίαις. evils. καί So νῦν, now, δέσποτα O master Κύριε, Lord, λάβε take τήν - ψυχήν life μου my ἀπ ̓ from ἐμοῦ, me ὅτι because καλόν (it is) better τό - ἀποθανεῖν to die με for me ἤ than ζῇν to live. με. for me καί And εἶπεν said Κύριος (the) Lord πρός to Ἰωνᾶν Jonah εἰ If σφόδρα very (much)? λελύπησαι grieve σύ; you καί And ἐξῆλθεν went Ἰωνᾶς Jonah ἐκ out of τῆς the πόλεως, city καί and ἐκάθισεν sat ἀπέναντι opposite τῆς of the πόλεως· city καί and ἐποίησεν made ἑαυτῷ for himself ἐκεῖ there σκηνήν a tent καί and ἐκάθητο sat ὑποκάτω under αὐτῆς it ἐν in σκιᾷ, shade ἕως until οὗ which (point) ἀπίδῃ he might look up (to see) τί what ἔσται will happen τῇ in the πόλει. city καί And προσέταξεν commanded Κύριος (the) Lord ὁ - θεός God κολοκύνθῃ, a gourd καί and ἀνέβη it rose up ὑπέρ over κεφαλῆς (the) head τοῦ - Ἰωνᾶ of Jonah τοῦ - εἶναι to provide σκιάν shade ὑπεράνω over τῆς - κεφαλῆς head αὐτοῦ, his τοῦ - σκιάζειν to shade αὐτῷ him ἀπό from τῶν - κακῶν bad (things) αὐτοῦ· his καί and ἐχάρη rejoiced Ἰωνᾶς Jonah ἐπί at τῇ the κολοκύνθῃ gourd χαράν (with) delight. μεγάλην. great καί And προσέταξεν commanded ὁ - θεός God σκώληκι a worm ἑωθινῇ early τῇ on the ἐπαύριον, next day καί and ἐπάταξεν it attacked τήν the κολόκυνθαν, gourd καί and ἀπεξηράνθη. (the gourd) withered (away). καί And ἐγένετο it came to pass ἅμα at once τῷ with the ἀνατεῖλαι rising up of τόν the ἥλιον sun, καί - προσέταξεν commanded ὁ - θεός God πνεύματι a wind καύσωνος east wind συνκαίοντι, burning καί and ἐπάταξεν attacked ὁ the ἥλιος sun ἐπί - τήν the κεφαλήν head Ἰωνᾶ· of Jonah καί and ὠλιγοψύχησεν he became discouraged καί and ἀπελέγετο renounced τήν - ψυχήν life αὐτοῦ, his καί and εἶπεν said: Καλόν (Its is) better μοι for me ἀποθανεῖν to die με - ἤ than ζῇν. to live. καί And εἶπεν said ὁ - θεός God πρός to Ἰωνᾶν Jonah εἰ Whether σφόδρα very (much) λελύπησαι grieved σύ you ἐπί on (behalf of) τῇ the κολοκύνθῃ; gourd? καί And εἶπεν he said: Σφόδρα very (much) λελύπημαι have grieved ἐγώ I ἕως (even) until θανάτου. death. καί And εἶπεν said: Κύριος (the) Lord Σύ You ἐφείσω have pity ὑπέρ over τῆς the κολοκύνθης, gourd ὑπέρ over ἧς which οὐ not ἐκακοπάθησας you did suffer ἐπ ̓ for αὐτήν, it καί and οὐ not ἐξέθρεψας you did nourish αὐτήν, it, ἥ that which ἐγενήθη came about ὑπό by νύκτα night καί and ὑπό by νύκτα night ἀπώλετο. it perished. ἐγώ should I δέ But οὐ not φείσομαι have pity ὑπέρ over Νινευή Nineveh τῆς the πόλεως city τῆς - μεγάλης, great ἐν in ᾗ which κατοικοῦσιν reside πλείους many δώδεκα twelve μυριάδες ten thousands ἀνθρώπων, people οἵτινες who οὐ not ἔγνωσαν did know δεξιάν right hand αὐτῶν their ἤ or ἀριστεράν left hand αὐτῶν, their καί and κτήνη cattle? πολλά; many
