καί So ἔβαλον they cast κλήρους, lots καί and ἔπεσεν fell ὁ the κλῆρος lot ἐπί upon Ἰωνᾶν. Jonah καί And εἶπον they said πρός to αὐτόν him: Ἀπάγγειλον Tell ἡμῖν us τίς What σου your ἡ - ἐργασία occupation ἐστίν, is καί and πόθεν from where ἔρχῃ, did you come? καί And ἐκ out of ποίας which χώρας country καί and ἐκ from ποίου which λαοῦ people εἶ are σύ; you? καί And εἶπεν he said πρός to αὐτούς them: Δοῦλος a servant Κυρίου of the Lord ἐγώ I εἰμί, am καί and τόν the κύριον Lord θεόν God τοῦ - οὐρανοῦ of heaven, ἐγώ I σέβομαι, revere ὅς who ἐποίησεν made τήν the θάλασσαν sea καί and τήν the ξηράν. dry (land). καί So ἐφοβήθησαν feared οἱ the ἄνδρες men φόβον fear μέγαν (with) a great καί and εἶπαν said πρός to αὐτόν him: Τί What τοῦτο (is) this ἐποίησας; you have done? διότι For ἔγνωσαν knew οἱ the ἄνδρες men ὅτι that ἐκ from προσώπου (the) presence Κυρίου of the Lord ἦν he was φεύγων, fleeing ὅτι because ἀπήγγειλεν he had told αὐτοῖς. them. καί And εἶπαν they said πρός to αὐτόν him, Τί “What σοι for you ποιήσομεν, shall we do καί (so that) κοπάσει might cease ἡ the θάλασσα sea ἀφ ̓ from ἡμῶν; us? ὅτι Because ἡ the θάλασσα sea ἐπορεύετο goes (about) καί and ἐξήγειρεν raises up (with) μᾶλλον greater κλύδωνα. waves. καί And εἶπεν said Ἰωνᾶς Jonah πρός to αὐτούς them: Ἄρατε Take με me καί and ἐμβάλετε throw με me εἰς into τήν the θάλασσαν, sea καί and κοπάσει will cease ἡ the θάλασσα sea ἀφ ̓ from ὑμῶν· you διότι because ἔγνωκα know ἐγώ I ὅτι that δι ̓ on account of ἐμέ me. ὁ - κλύδων wave ὁ - μέγας great οὗτος this ἐφ ̓ upon ὑμᾶς you ἐστίν. is καί So παρεβιάζοντο tried very hard οἱ the ἄνδρες men τοῦ - ἐπιστρέψαι to return πρός towards τήν the γῆν, land, καί but οὐ not ἠδύναντο, they were able, ὅτι because ἡ the θάλασσα sea ἐπορεύετο came καί and ἐξηγείρετο raised up μᾶλλον (even) more ἐπ ̓ upon αὐτούς. them. καί And ἀνεβόησαν they cried out πρός to Κύριον (the) Lord καί and εἶπαν said: Μηδαμῶς, By no means, Κύριε· O Lord, μή - ἀπολώμεθα let us perish ἕνεκεν on account of τῆς the ψυχῆς life τοῦ - ἀνθρώπου person, τούτου, of this καί and μή not δῷς do place ἐφ ̓ upon ἡμᾶς us αἷμα blood δίκαιον, righteous διότι For σύ, you, Κύριε, O Lord, ὅν (in) what τρόπον manner ἐβούλου you wish. πεποίηκας. have done καί And ἔλαβον they took τόν - Ἰωνᾶν Jonah καί and ἐξέβαλον threw αὐτόν him εἰς into τήν the θάλασσαν, sea, καί and ἔστη stopped ἡ the θάλασσα sea ἐκ from τοῦ - σάλου raging. αὐτῆς. its καί And ἐφοβήθησαν feared οἱ the ἄνδρες men φόβῳ fear μεγάλῳ (with) great τόν the κύριον, Lord καί and ἔθυσαν they sacrificed θυσίας an offering τῷ to the κυρίῳ Lord καί and εὔξαντο made εὐχάς. vows.
Καί And προσέταξεν commanded Κύριος (the) Lord κήτει sea monster μεγάλῳ a great καταπιεῖν to swallow τόν - Ἰωνᾶν· Jonah καί and ἦν was Ἰωνᾶς Jonah ἐν in τῇ the κοιλίᾳ belly τοῦ of the κήτους sea monster τρεῖς (for) three ἡμέρας days καί and τρεῖς three νύκτας. nights. καί And προσηύξατο prayed Ἰωνᾶς Jonah πρός to Κύριον (the) Lord τόν - θεόν God αὐτοῦ his ἐκ from τῆς the κοιλίας belly τοῦ of the κήτους, sea monster, καί and εἶπεν said:
Ἐβόησα I cried out ἐν in θλίψει distress μου my πρός to Κύριον (the) Lord τόν - θεόν God μου, my καί and εἰσήκουσεν he heard μου. me;
ἐκ from κοιλίας (the) belly ᾅδου of Hades κραυγῆς outcry μου (came) my ἤκουσας (and) you heard φωνῆς voice. μου· my
ἀπέρριψας You threw με me εἰς into βάθη (the) depth καρδίας of (the) heart θαλάσσης, of the sea
καί and ποταμοί rivers με me; ἐκύκλωσαν, surrounded
πάντες all (of) οἱ - μετεωρισμοί lifted up (things) σου your καί and τά - κύματα billows σου your ἐπ ̓ over ἐμέ me, διῆλθον. have passed
καί and ἐγώ I εἶπα said: Ἀπῶσμαι I have been thrust away ἐκ from ὀφθαλμῶν eyes; σου· your
ἄρα how προσθήσω shall I add τοῦ - ἐπιβλέψαι to look πρός towards τόν - ναόν temple? τόν - ἅγιον holy σου· your
περιεχύθη is poured ὕδωρ Water μοι (over) me ἕως until ψυχῆς, life;
ἄβυσσος (the) abyss ἐκύκλωσεν surrounds με me ἐσχάτη, (to the) last;
ἔδυ withdraws ἡ - κεφαλή head μου my εἰς into σχισμάς (the) cleft ὀρέων, of the hill.
κατέβην I went down εἰς into γῆν (the) earth ἧς where οἱ - μοχλοί bars αὐτῆς its κάτοχοι barriers αἰώνιοι· (are) eternal
καί so ἀναβήτω depart, φθορά (let the) corruption ζωῆς life μου, of my Κύριε O Lord ὁ - θεός God. μου, my
ἐν when τῷ - ἐκλιπεῖν is departing ἀπ ̓ from ἐμοῦ me τήν - ψυχήν life, μου my τοῦ the κυρίου Lord ἐμνήσθην, I remembered
καί and ἔλθοι came πρός to σέ you ἡ - εὐχή prayer μου my εἰς into ναόν temple. ἅγιον holy σου. your
φυλασσόμενοι Observing μάταια empty καί and ψευδῆ false (practices),
ἔλεος mercy. αὐτῶν their ἐγκατέλιπον. they have forsaken
ἐγώ I δέ But μετά with φωνῆς a voice αἰνέσεως of praise καί - ἐξομολογήσεως confession θύσω offer σοι, to you;
ὅσα as much as ηὐξάμην I have vowed, ἀποδώσω I will repay σοι you, σωτηρίου of (my) deliverance. τῷ the κυρίῳ. Lord
Καί And προσετάγη he commanded τῷ the κήτει, sea monster καί and ἐξέβαλεν it cast out τόν - Ἰωνᾶν Jonah ἐπί onto τήν the ξηράν. dry (land).
Καί And ἐγένετο came λόγος the word Κυρίου of the Lord πρός to Ἰωνᾶν Jonah ἐκ - δευτέρου a second (time), λέγων saying: Ἀνάστηθι Rise up πορεύθητι go εἰς into Νινευή Nineveh τήν the πόλιν city τήν - μεγάλην, great καί and κήρυξον announce ἐν in αὐτῇ it κατά according to τό the κήρυγμα message τό - ἔμπροσθεν before ὅ which ἐγώ I ἐλάλησα spoke πρός to σέ. you. καί And ἀνέστη rose up Ἰωνᾶς Jonah καί and ἐπορεύθη went εἰς into Νινευή, Nineveh καθά just as ἐλάλησεν spoke. Κύριος· (the) Lord ἡ - δέ Now Νινευή Nineveh ἦν was πόλις city μεγάλη a large τῷ before θεῷ, God, ὡσεί about πορείας journey. ὁδοῦ - ἡμερῶν days’ τριῶν. a three καί And ἤρξατο began Ἰωνᾶς Jonah τοῦ - εἰσελθεῖν to enter εἰς into τήν the πόλιν city ὡσεί about πορείαν journey ἡμέρας day’s μιᾶς, one καί and ἐκήρυξεν announced καί and εἶπεν said: Ἔτι Yet, τρεῖς three ἡμέραι days καί and Νινευή Nineveh καταστραφήσεται. will be overturned. καί And ἐνεπίστευσαν gave credence to οἱ the ἄνδρες men Νινευή of Nineveh τῷ - θεῷ, God καί and ἐκήρυξαν announced νηστίαν, a fast καί and ἐνεδύσαντο put on σάκκους sackcloth ἀπό from μεγάλου great αὐτῶν their ἕως to μικροῦ small. αὐτῶν. their καί And ἤγγισεν came (near) ὁ the λόγος report πρός to τόν the βασιλέα king τῆς - Νινευή· of Nineveh καί and ἐξανέστη he stood up ἀπό from τοῦ - θρόνου throne αὐτοῦ, his καί and περιείλατο he removed τήν - στολήν garment αὐτοῦ his ἀφ ̓ from ἑαυτοῦ himself καί and περιεβάλετο put on σάκκον, sackcloth καί and ἐκάθισεν sat ἐπί on σποδοῦ. ashes. καί And ἐκηρύχθη it was proclaimed καί and ἐρρέθη spoken ἐν in τῇ - Νινευή Nineveh παρά from τοῦ the βασιλέως king καί and παρά from τῶν - μεγιστάνων nobles, αὐτοῦ his λέγων saying: οἱ (Let) the ἄνθρωποι people καί and τά the κτήνη flocks and herds καί and οἱ the βόες cattle καί and τά the πρόβατα sheep μή not γευσάσθωσαν taste μηδέν anything μηδέ nor νεμέσθωσαν graze μηδέ nor ὕδωρ water. πιέτωσαν. drink καί And περιεβάλοντο clothed (themselves) with σάκκους sackcloth οἱ the ἄνθρωποι people καί and τά the κτήνη, cattle καί and ἀνεβόησαν cried out πρός to τόν - θεόν God ἐκτενῶς· fervently καί and ἀπέστρεψαν turned ἕκαστος each ἀπό away from τῆς - ὁδοῦ way αὐτοῦ his τῆς - πονηρᾶς evil καί and ἀπό away from τῆς the ἀδικίας injustice τῆς - ἐν - χερσίν hand(s), αὐτῶν, of their λέγοντες saying: Τίς Who οἶδεν knows εἰ whether μετανοήσει will reconsider ὁ - θεός God καί and ἀποστρέψει turn back ἐκ from ὀργῆς anger θυμοῦ of fury αὐτοῦ, his καί so οὐ not μή - ἀπολώμεθα; we perish? καί And εἶδεν saw ὁ - θεός God τά - ἔργα efforts, αὐτῶν, their ὅτι that ἀπέστρεψαν they turned away ἀπό from τῶν - ὁδῶν ways. αὐτῶν their τῶν - πονηρῶν· evil καί So μετενόησεν reconsidered ὁ - θεός God ἐπί - τῇ the κακίᾳ evil ᾗ which ἐλάλησεν he spoke τοῦ - ποιῆσαι to do αὐτοῖς, to them, καί and οὐ not ἐποίησεν. he did do (it).
Καί And ἐλυπήθη was grieved Ἰωνᾶς Jonah λύπην grief μεγάλην, (with) great καί and συνεχύθη· was confused. καί And προσεύξατο he prayed πρός to Κύριον (the) Lord καί and εἶπεν said: Ὦ O Κύριε, Lord, οὐ not οὗτοι (were) these οἱ - λόγοι words μου, my ἔτι still ὄντος was μου (while) I ἐν in τῇ - γῇ land? μου; my διά On account of τοῦτο this προέφθασα I anticipated τοῦ - φυγεῖν to flee εἰς into Θαρσείς, Tarshish διότι because ἔγνων I knew ὅτι that σύ you ἐλεήμων (are) compassionate καί and οἰκτίρμων, merciful, μακρόθυμος patient καί and πολυέλεος very merciful καί and μετανοῶν (willing to) reconsider ἐπί - ταῖς - κακίαις. evils. καί So νῦν, now, δέσποτα O master Κύριε, Lord, λάβε take τήν - ψυχήν life μου my ἀπ ̓ from ἐμοῦ, me ὅτι because καλόν (it is) better τό - ἀποθανεῖν to die με for me ἤ than ζῇν to live. με. for me καί And εἶπεν said Κύριος (the) Lord πρός to Ἰωνᾶν Jonah εἰ If σφόδρα very (much)? λελύπησαι grieve σύ; you καί And ἐξῆλθεν went Ἰωνᾶς Jonah ἐκ out of τῆς the πόλεως, city καί and ἐκάθισεν sat ἀπέναντι opposite τῆς of the πόλεως· city καί and ἐποίησεν made ἑαυτῷ for himself ἐκεῖ there σκηνήν a tent καί and ἐκάθητο sat ὑποκάτω under αὐτῆς it ἐν in σκιᾷ, shade ἕως until οὗ which (point) ἀπίδῃ he might look up (to see) τί what ἔσται will happen τῇ in the πόλει. city καί And προσέταξεν commanded Κύριος (the) Lord ὁ - θεός God κολοκύνθῃ, a gourd καί and ἀνέβη it rose up ὑπέρ over κεφαλῆς (the) head τοῦ - Ἰωνᾶ of Jonah τοῦ - εἶναι to provide σκιάν shade ὑπεράνω over τῆς - κεφαλῆς head αὐτοῦ, his τοῦ - σκιάζειν to shade αὐτῷ him ἀπό from τῶν - κακῶν bad (things) αὐτοῦ· his καί and ἐχάρη rejoiced Ἰωνᾶς Jonah ἐπί at τῇ the κολοκύνθῃ gourd χαράν (with) delight. μεγάλην. great καί And προσέταξεν commanded ὁ - θεός God σκώληκι a worm ἑωθινῇ early τῇ on the ἐπαύριον, next day καί and ἐπάταξεν it attacked τήν the κολόκυνθαν, gourd καί and ἀπεξηράνθη. (the gourd) withered (away). καί And ἐγένετο it came to pass ἅμα at once τῷ with the ἀνατεῖλαι rising up of τόν the ἥλιον sun, καί - προσέταξεν commanded ὁ - θεός God πνεύματι a wind καύσωνος east wind συνκαίοντι, burning καί and ἐπάταξεν attacked ὁ the ἥλιος sun ἐπί - τήν the κεφαλήν head Ἰωνᾶ· of Jonah καί and ὠλιγοψύχησεν he became discouraged καί and ἀπελέγετο renounced τήν - ψυχήν life αὐτοῦ, his καί and εἶπεν said: Καλόν (Its is) better μοι for me ἀποθανεῖν to die με - ἤ than ζῇν. to live. καί And εἶπεν said ὁ - θεός God πρός to Ἰωνᾶν Jonah εἰ Whether σφόδρα very (much) λελύπησαι grieved σύ you ἐπί on (behalf of) τῇ the κολοκύνθῃ; gourd? καί And εἶπεν he said: Σφόδρα very (much) λελύπημαι have grieved ἐγώ I ἕως (even) until θανάτου. death. καί And εἶπεν said: Κύριος (the) Lord Σύ You ἐφείσω have pity ὑπέρ over τῆς the κολοκύνθης, gourd ὑπέρ over ἧς which οὐ not ἐκακοπάθησας you did suffer ἐπ ̓ for αὐτήν, it καί and οὐ not ἐξέθρεψας you did nourish αὐτήν, it, ἥ that which ἐγενήθη came about ὑπό by νύκτα night καί and ὑπό by νύκτα night ἀπώλετο. it perished. ἐγώ should I δέ But οὐ not φείσομαι have pity ὑπέρ over Νινευή Nineveh τῆς the πόλεως city τῆς - μεγάλης, great ἐν in ᾗ which κατοικοῦσιν reside πλείους many δώδεκα twelve μυριάδες ten thousands ἀνθρώπων, people οἵτινες who οὐ not ἔγνωσαν did know δεξιάν right hand αὐτῶν their ἤ or ἀριστεράν left hand αὐτῶν, their καί and κτήνη cattle? πολλά; many
