Τούτου Of this χάριν on account, ἀπέλιπον I left σε you ἐν in Κρήτῃ, Crete, ἵνα so that τά the things λείποντα lacking ἐπιδιορθώσῃ you might set in order, καί and καταστήσῃς might appoint κατά in every πόλιν town πρεσβυτέρους, elders, ὡς as ἐγώ I σοι you διεταξάμην, directed, εἴ if τίς anyone ἐστίν is ἀνέγκλητος, blameless, μιᾶς of one γυναικός wife ἀνήρ, [the] husband, τέκνα children ἔχων having πιστά, believing, μή not ἐν under κατηγορίᾳ accusation ἀσωτίας of debauchery, ἤ or ἀνυπότακτα. insubordinate. Δεῖ It behooves γάρ for τόν the ἐπίσκοπον overseer ἀνέγκλητον blameless εἶναι to be, ὡς as Θεοῦ God’s οἰκονόμον, steward; μή not αὐθάδη, self-willed, μή not ὀργίλον, quick tempered, μή not πάροινον, given to wine, μή not πλήκτην, a striker, μή not αἰσχροκερδῆ, greedy of base gain, ἀλλά but φιλόξενον hospitable, φιλάγαθον a lover of good, σώφρονα self-controlled, δίκαιον upright, ὅσιον holy, ἐγκρατῆ, [and] disciplined; ἀντεχόμενον holding to τοῦ the κατά according to τήν the διδαχήν teaching πιστοῦ faithful λόγου, word, ἵνα that δυνατός able ᾖ he may be καί both παρακαλεῖν to encourage ἐν with τῇ - διδασκαλίᾳ teaching τῇ - ὑγιαινούσῃ sound, καί and τούς those ἀντιλέγοντας contradicting [it] ἐλέγχειν. to convict. Εἰσίν There are γάρ for πολλοί many καί also ἀνυπότακτοι, insubordinate, ματαιολόγοι empty talkers, καί and φρεναπάται, deceivers, μάλιστα especially οἱ those ἐκ of τῆς the περιτομῆς, circumcision, οὕς whom δεῖ it is necessary ἐπιστομίζειν, to silence, οἵτινες who ὅλους whole οἴκους households ἀνατρέπουσιν overthrow, διδάσκοντες teaching ἅ things that [they] μή not δεῖ ought, αἰσχροῦ base κέρδους gain χάριν. for [the] sake of. εἶπεν Said τὶς one ἐκ of αὐτῶν them, ἴδιος own αὐτῶν of them, προφήτης· a prophet, Κρῆτες Cretans ἀεί [are] always ψεῦσται, liars, κακά evil θηρία, beasts, γαστέρες gluttons ἀργαί. lazy.”
ἡ The μαρτυρία testimony αὕτη this ἐστίν is ἀληθής. true, δι ̓ for ἥν which αἰτίαν cause ἔλεγχε rebuke αὐτούς them ἀποτόμως, severely, ἵνα so that ὑγιαίνωσιν they may be sound ἐν in τῇ the πίστει, faith, μή not προσέχοντες giving heed Ἰουδαϊκοῖς to Jewish μύθοις myths καί and ἐντολαῖς [the] commandments ἀνθρώπων of men, ἀποστρεφομένων turning away from τήν the ἀλήθειαν. truth. Πάντα All things [are] καθαρά pure τοῖς to the καθαροῖς· pure; τοῖς to those δέ however μεμιαμμένοις being defiled καί and ἀπίστοις unbelieving, οὐδέν nothing καθαρόν, [is] pure; ἀλλά Instead, μεμίανται are defiled αὐτῶν their καί both ὁ - νοῦς mind καί and ἡ - συνείδησις. conscience. Θεόν God ὁμολογοῦσιν they profess εἰδέναι, to know; τοῖς in δέ however ἔργοις works, ἀρνοῦνται, they deny [Him], βδελυκτοί detestable ὄντες being καί and ἀπειθεῖς disobedient, καί and πρός for πᾶν any ἔργον work ἀγαθόν good, ἀδόκιμοι. unfit.
Σύ You δέ however λάλει speak ἅ the things that πρέπει are consistent with τῇ - ὑγιαινούσῃ sound διδασκαλίᾳ. doctrine. Πρεσβύτας [The] aged [men] νηφαλίους sober-minded εἶναι, are to be, σεμνούς, dignified, σώφρονας, self-controlled, ὑγιαίνοντας sound τῇ - πίστει, in faith, τῇ - ἀγάπῃ, in love, τῇ - ὑπομονῇ· in endurance; πρεσβύτιδας [the] aged [women] ὡσαύτως likewise, ἐν in καταστήματι behavior ἱεροπρεπεῖς, reverent, μή not διαβόλους slanderers, μηδέ not οἴνῳ to wine πολλῷ much δεδουλωμένας, being enslaved, καλοδιδασκάλους, teachers of what is good, ἵνα so that σωφρονίζωσιν they may train τάς the νέας young [women] φιλάνδρους lovers of [their] husbands εἶναι, to be, φιλοτέκνους loving [their] children, σώφρονας self-controlled, ἁγνάς pure, οἰκουργούς keepers at home, ἀγαθάς, kind, ὑποτασσομένας being subject τοῖς to the ἰδίοις own ἀνδράσιν, husbands, ἵνα so that μή not ὁ the λόγος word τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God βλασφημῆται. should be maligned.
Τούς The νεωτέρους younger [men], ὡσαύτως likewise, παρακάλει exhort σωφρονεῖν to be self-controlled. Περί In πάντα, all things σεαυτόν yourself παρεχόμενος be holding forth τύπον [as] a pattern καλῶν of good ἔργων, works; ἐν in τῇ the διδασκαλίᾳ teaching ἀφθορίαν, integrity, σεμνότητα, dignity, λόγον speech ὑγιῆ sound, ἀκατάγνωστον, beyond reproach, ἵνα so that ὁ he who is ἐκ of the ἐναντίας contrary ἐντραπῇ may be ashamed, μηδέν nothing ἔχων having λέγειν to say περί concerning ἡμῶν us φαῦλον. evil.
Δούλους Servants ἰδίοις to their own δεσπόταις masters ὑποτάσσεσθαι are to be subject, ἐν in πᾶσιν, everything εὐαρέστους well-pleasing εἶναι, to be, μή not ἀντιλέγοντας, gainsaying, μή not νοσφιζομένους, pilfering, ἀλλά but πᾶσαν all πίστιν fidelity ἐνδεικνυμένους showing ἀγαθήν, good, ἵνα so that τήν the διδασκαλίαν doctrine τήν of τοῦ the Σωτῆρος Savior ἡμῶν of us, Θεοῦ God, κοσμῶσιν they may adorn ἐν in πᾶσιν. all things.
Ἐπεφάνη Has appeared γάρ for ἡ the χάρις grace τοῦ - Θεοῦ of God, σωτήριος bringing salvation πᾶσιν to all ἀνθρώποις men, παιδεύουσα instructing ἡμᾶς, us ἵνα that, ἀρνησάμενοι having denied τήν - ἀσέβειαν ungodliness καί and τάς - κοσμικάς worldly ἐπιθυμίας passions, σωφρόνως discreetly καί and δικαίως righteously καί and εὐσεβῶς piously ζήσωμεν we should live ἐν in τῷ the νῦν present αἰῶνι, age, προσδεχόμενοι awaiting τήν the μακαρίαν blessed ἐλπίδα hope καί and ἐπιφάνειαν [the] appearing τῆς of the δόξης glory τοῦ of the μεγάλου great Θεοῦ God καί and Σωτῆρος Savior ἡμῶν of us, Ἰησοῦ Jesus, Χριστοῦ, Christ ὅς who ἔδωκεν gave ἑαυτόν Himself ὑπέρ for ἡμῶν, us, ἵνα that λυτρώσηται He might redeem ἡμᾶς us ἀπό from πάσης all ἀνομίας lawlessness, καί and καθαρίσῃ might purify ἑαυτῷ to Himself λαόν a people περιούσιον, specially chosen, ζηλωτήν zealous καλῶν of good ἔργων. works. Ταῦτα These things λάλει speak, καί and παρακάλει exhort, καί and ἔλεγχε rebuke μετά with πάσης all ἐπιταγῆς· authority. μηδείς No one σου you περιφρονείτω. let despise.
Ὑπομίμνῃσκε Remind αὐτούς them ἀρχαῖς to rulers, ἐξουσίαις to authorities, ὑποτάσσεσθαι, to be subject, πειθαρχεῖν, to be obedient; πρός for πᾶν every ἔργον work ἀγαθόν good, ἑτοίμους ready εἶναι, to be; μηδένα no one βλασφημεῖν, to speak evil of, ἀμάχους peaceable εἶναι, to be, ἐπιεικεῖς, gentle, πᾶσαν all ἐνδεικνυμένους showing πραΰτητα humility πρός toward πάντας all ἀνθρώπους. men. Ἦμεν Were γάρ for ποτέ once καί also ἡμεῖς we ourselves ἀνόητοι, foolish, ἀπειθεῖς, disobedient, πλανώμενοι, being deceived, δουλεύοντες serving ἐπιθυμίαις lusts καί and ἡδοναῖς pleasures ποικίλαις, various, ἐν in κακίᾳ malice καί and φθόνῳ envy διάγοντες, living, στυγητοί, hateful, μισοῦντες hating ἀλλήλους. one another.
Ὅτε When δέ however ἡ the χρηστότης kindness καί and ἡ the φιλανθρωπία love of mankind ἐπεφάνη appeared, τοῦ of the Σωτῆρος Savior ἡμῶν of us, Θεοῦ, God, οὐ not ἐκ by ἔργων works τῶν - ἐν in δικαιοσύνῃ righteousness ἅ that ἐποιήσαμεν did ἡμεῖς we, ἀλλά but κατά according to τό - αὐτοῦ His ἔλεος mercy, ἔσωσεν He saved ἡμᾶς us διά through λουτροῦ [the] washing παλινγενεσίας of regeneration καί and ἀνακαινώσεως renewing Πνεύματος of [the] Spirit Ἁγίου, Holy, οὗ whom ἐξέχεεν He poured out ἐφ ̓ on ἡμᾶς us πλουσίως richly διά through Ἰησοῦ Jesus Χριστοῦ Christ, τοῦ the Σωτῆρος Savior ἡμῶν, of us, ἵνα so that, δικαιωθέντες having been justified τῇ - ἐκείνου by that χάριτι grace, κληρονόμοι heirs γενηθῶμεν we should become κατ ̓ according to ἐλπίδα [the] hope ζωῆς of life αἰωνίου. eternal.
Πιστός Trustworthy [is] ὁ the λόγος· saying, καί and περί concerning τούτων these things βούλομαι I want σε you διαβεβαιοῦσθαι, to affirm strongly, ἵνα so that φροντίζωσιν may take care καλῶν good ἔργων works προΐστασθαι to be devoted to, οἱ those πεπιστευκότες believing Θεῷ· God. ταῦτα These things ἐστίν are καλά excellent καί and ὠφέλιμα profitable τοῖς - ἀνθρώποις. to men. Μωράς Foolish δέ however ζητήσεις controversies καί and γενεαλογίας genealogies καί and ἔρεις arguments καί and μάχας quarrels νομικάς about [the] Law, περιΐστασο· avoid; εἰσίν they are γάρ for ἀνωφελεῖς unprofitable καί and μάταιοι. worthless. αἱρετικόν A factious ἄνθρωπον man, μετά after μίαν one καί and δευτέραν a second νουθεσίαν admonition, παραιτοῦ, reject, εἰδώς knowing ὅτι that ἐξέστραπται is corrupt ὁ - τοιοῦτος such a man, καί and ἁμαρτάνει is sinning, ὤν being αὐτοκατάκριτος. self-condemned.
Ὅταν When πέμψω I shall send Ἀρτεμᾶν Artemas πρός to σέ you, ἤ or Τυχικόν, Tychicus, σπούδασον be diligent ἐλθεῖν to come πρός to με me εἰς into Νικόπολιν, Nicopolis; ἐκεῖ there γάρ for κέκρικα I have decided παραχειμάσαι. to winter. Ζηνᾶν Zenas τόν the νομικόν lawyer καί and Ἀπολλῶν Apollos σπουδαίως earnestly πρόπεμψον, equip, ἵνα so that μηδέν nothing αὐτοῖς to them λείπῃ. should be lacking. μανθανέτωσαν Let learn δέ now καί also οἱ - ἡμέτεροι our [people] καλῶν good ἔργων works προΐστασθαι to devote themselves to, εἰς for τάς - ἀναγκαίας necessary χρείας, needs, ἵνα so that μή not ὦσιν they should be ἄκαρποι. unfruitful.
Ἀσπάζονται Greet σε you, οἱ those μετ ̓ with ἐμοῦ me πάντες. all. Ἄσπασαι Greet τούς those φιλοῦντας loving ἡμᾶς us ἐν in πίστει. [the] faith.
ἡ - χάρις Grace [be] μετά with πάντων all ὑμῶν. of you.
